  • This is an adaptation of William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" that was made for our English 439 class. It is based on the story but was updated to a more recent time period so as to make the setting easier to reproduce.

Thanks to everyone who's commented! It's been a couple of years since I posted this video, and I haven't really checked up on it. In response to multiple questions about the music, it was almost entirely composed by my brother Mark Rostad except for the small bit from Chopin during the brief montage in the middle. Being original, there is no available sheet music or anything for it. He'll be glad to know it was appreciated though! Thanks again!

Just found this. Loved the whole production. The things you find when you start googling Faulkner for no good reason! Original composition was spookily understated and perfect. Beautifully performed. Thank you for posting this.

Actually, the "smell" was Homer's body, not her father's.

Im reading this for my Eng102 class and wow this was almost perfect. IT made the text far more easier to understand as I had a hard time analyzing the foreshadow of Homer's death. Bravo!

I have this one in my Lit class 1302. I prefer these to the actual text. I have read along and it is almost verbatim. .If you have to do one on Poe and the "Cask of Amontillado"

the house stank because her father died upstairs in the bed, but she refused to believe it for 2 weeks. (denial is part of the grieving process) Sick woman though.

All things considered, I thought the acting and direction was magnificent. Things to consider are the audience it was intended for: and English 439 class off students with no required talent in acting, film making, or directing.
My only real concern with this adaptation is that it never really covers Emily's two cousins and how they may have been an influence in her decision to murder Homer Barron. Also, and I may have interpreted it wrong, but I thought Homer claimed he was into men.

Your comment contradicts itself. First you acknowledge that it is a low/no budget film. Then you say how bad the acting and art directing is, despite already recognizing that it is a no budget student film. Finally I would presume that someone who is speaking about "masterpieces" would be able to use proper grammar. Please continue licking windows for a living and give up on becoming a critic.

Low this is such a low budget short movie. No quality in acting at all. Expect Old Miss Emily and few other interviews. Art directing is sucks. This ruin the image of the short story. It is better to be removed with out disgracing such a masterpiece.
