This is my personal favorite of the PC-98 era. Having played this game on Lunatic to death, it's kinda funny to think that there are like 3 parts that are near-impossible and then the rest of the game is manageable. I read the title of the video and immediately jumped to 10:38. Boy, that's actually insane lol

Yes, both Stage 4 midbosses and rings are by far the worst parts of the game, it took quite a bit of research, planning and practice to make them less impossible. I managed to get pretty ok at both midbosses, so my last attempts were mostly about bruteforcing my way past rings

Touhou 4: LLS is a pretty decent/alright-ish game. It's way better than the first three games, imo. The improvement over them is notable. it was fun on easy mode but got a little frustrating on normal mode as usual. It would've been good if it wasn't for the random annoying lag and bullets flying at mach 3 speed. Most of the patterns were bearable, but with a recipe like that, once you see the bullets flying at you, it's already too late. I beat it on easy with 3 deaths then on normal with 2 continues. For some reason I didn’t get a 6th stage but I don’t really care. Don’t even get me started on the extra stage, lol. While it’s insane to try for the first time, and the music is solid, I can’t even imagine how hard it is with all of that ridiculous lag and mach 4 bullets everywhere. Well, it's a PC-98 game with some flaws and aspects that haven’t aged well so it's not really surprising. At least it improved a lot upon 1, 2, 3 but i wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. I'm just going to try the extra stage and then move on to 5

Yeah, LLS is alright, it's hard for me to compare it to HRtP or PoDD, but it's a huge improvement over SoEW for sure. LLS deserves credit for introducing core mechanics to the series like focusing and deathbombing and it started the trend of Stage 4 bosses having some gimmick often influenced by your chosen shottype, also the first game in the series with 6 stage formula (SoEW had only 5). Yeah, the game can get pretty fast at times, but it also gets easier after you die, because this game has adaptive difficulty, but even if you are stuck at high rank, fast aimed bullets can be made much more managable by tapping in one direction, most of the time either left or right although vertical streaming is also useful sometimes. This way no matter how fast these bullets are, they will 100% miss you, unless you were streaming too slow. Personally I think LLS is worth playing even despite its age, the only roadblock being emulation itself, especially with exactly LLS, cause if your emulator isn't configured properly the game at best have too much slowdown, and at worst, crash at certain points like Stage 5 boss if you're playing as Reimu. Also some requirements need to be fulfiled in order to access Stage 6, you need to be playing on at least Normal and not use any continues, otherwise the game will just end after Stage 5 boss. Have fun with Mystic Square, it's my personal favourite from PC-98 games

@@Oringiri HRtP is literally built differently compared to other games.
The game gives you extra lives so often, it is one of the easiest Lunatic 1ccs once you know how to manage the resources game gives you.
So of course without that luxury, the game becomes noticeably harder. Elis with her RNG bullshit becomes that much harder when you can't just bomb the worst patterns.
...oh yeah also no dedicated bomb button. I love bombing when there is nothing on screen worth bombing orz. I have heard one of the runs died exactly to that kind of shit.
the other route seems to be even worse for No Bomb runs since Kikuri's opener is brutally difficult especially on high rank. Yeah, bombing in HRtP is needlessly complicated imo, one of possible combinations if I remember correctly is left, right and z so you can easily do it by accident

Thanks! Other than the 3 most known ones (both S4 midbosses and S5 rings) I'd say Reimu's first yinyang attack can be pretty scary, most notably because they don't despawn between patterns and that can easily mess you up.

Thanks! I got my first 1MNB run back in May 2020, so It took me almost 2 years to get this run. Of course I wasn't grinding regularly, but it's still pretty crazy.

I am kinda out of touch with the strategies, does rank increase over time by itself or is it increased only with item collection? cause I see you avoiding tons of collectibles
Yes, it does increase over time, but how quickly it does is tied to amount of extra lives, so less lives = slower rank growth. There's a few reasons why I was avoiding items. Less points leads to less lives, but also every single point item I drop decreases rank a little. Similar story with power items. While dropping them does nothing to rank, collecting them only affects rank while in full power, so I want to reach that point as late as possible and to be more specific, until I pass Stage 5 rings, then I don't have to worry about rank anymore, the rest of the game is pretty straighforward

Congratulations on the run, absolutely insane dedication and skill, man. You definitely deserve to be the first LLS LNN after that 1 miss.
I do have a few questions about the run, I'd imagine most of them have to do with keeping your rank low, but are there any other benefits to timing out some of the early (mid)bosses, and avoiding point and S power items? Also how come you stopped avoiding items during the s5 boss, Is your rank already too high at that point for it to matter?
It also seemed in a few areas you were avoiding normal power items. I could be missing something by not being as familiar with the game, but at times like 12:03 it seems like you could've easily grabbed a few extra power items. So does delaying full power mode also help with keeping a low rank?
Last thing, did you choose not to follow the s4 midbosses through the bullets at 10:48 and 11:47 because it was too much risk? Again, I'm not as familiar with LLS as you but it seems like you could kill them before their last wave with a small routing change.

Yes, there's few benefits from doing these actions. Timing out any last pattern of any boss decreases rank a little, it's only viable on Orange unfortunately. Kurumi's last pattern is pretty difficult and Elly's takes too long. Timing out midboss Kurumi was to not get any points from bullet cancel. Getting extra lives increases rank, so my goal was to either get them as late as possible since getting lives from score is pretty much unavoidable or don't get them at all if it's from the pickup, like these dropped from some midbosses. Goal of avoiding some of power items was to delay getting full power before Stage 5 boss. While not a full, you don't get any rank from them and MarisaA's damage is super good regardless. After Stage 5 rings there's no major run killers and I don't need to lower rank anymore so I can reach full power and grab anything I can without worrying too much.
Yup, both S4 midbosses were done according to route. I could kill them faster, but I wanted to get the smallest bullet cancel from them I could, just like with Kurumi, only I couldn't time them down fully because I didn't want to dodge that ridiculous spam more than once per midboss.

I had 1CCed lunatic of this game, but I somehow missed the rank mechanics being a thing and only just learned about them through this comment. That would probably have helped and be fun to route (; - ; )

PC-98 games are significantly less popular than Windows ones + LLS LNN is not a fun category to grind, it's mostly about surviving both Stage 4 midbosses and then winning the rings of death lottery right before Stage 5 Yuuka

Oh so u opted out of using extend cancels on kurumi/RoD and did some insane rank control instead, curious
Kurumi never needed extend cancels, only one Hikariko/Rengeteki/whatever s4 midboss's name is since unfortunately it was impossible to cancel both and RoD, but yeah, pretty much. In theory the idea was great, but in practice, while still possible, there was no room for error, one slight route mistake and It was over. I could still get Extend Cancel on rings with my route, but yeah, because of bad cancel on Stage 3 midboss I completely missed it

I'd rather like to see you dropping "slowed down gameplay" "challenge" in every future run. It's obvious right off the bat that you don't play at the default speed and everyone already knows about this. The best course of action right now would be just coming clean. Playing at slower speed than intended is considered cheating and hiding this fact makes you look dishonest. I really like seeing players conquering various challenges in games, but until you change your ways or at least mark your videos properly, unfortunately I'm not interested in watching your content.
