I have a legit Colt IAR prototype upper. The IAR was designed to run on 60 or 100 round Surefire mags. My colt prototype upper has a big heat synch on it as well to help dissipate heat. Not a cheap piece. Nice build brother.

That intro never gets old
I was in the Marines during the transition from M16 to M4 and M249 to M27. We saw reduced accuracy from the loss of barrel length when we switched to the M4. We had our DM’s use M16s because of that.
Running the SAW was a PITA because you really need an assistant gunner to run it well. People cite malfunctions a lot with the saw but that’s just due to poor trigger discipline and maintenance.
The M27 was second only to a M240B with a Golf gas block to me. That’s due to the variety of roles it could fill. Our DM’s switched over to the M27 so we gave them match ammo and a leupold scope to go with it. We were getting hits out to a thousand. We also had some 60rd mags but they were few and far between. We had to buy our own if we wanted them.
You can’t really get close to the cyclic durations of the SAW but it was good enough. We saw that covering fire worked best if it was accurate(obviously). So the M27 kept people down for longer in most cases.
There were some problems with it though. We had a lot of malfunctions in the beginning because people were cleaning it like their M4. You need to clean where the gas tube meets the piston and to do that you have to take the hand guard off. People were being lazy and not doing that because they’d have to re-zero their PEQ. There is also the case of round count and cyclic duration.
We may go back to the SAW in a near peer fight because firing at a squad to platoon sized element with the M27 is like beating someone with a dildo. They’re not going to die and you’ll feel inadequate.

I've got a ton of uppers built with Superlative Arms Piston Kits. They run great, work well with a can, and only add a couple of ounces over a DI system.
I have Two uppers with those piston kits. One is side charging long range rifle and the other is a "totally not SBR" pin&weld. The metal on both the rod and bcg are great and reliable, especially as someone who machined aerospace grade parts.

One thing that wasn't mentioned that helped with the accuracy of the IAR, especially against the M4/M16: the free-floating barrel.

Ruger has made the SR556 piston driven rifle for a while now. I’ve heard great things about it. Might wanna look into that. I can’t afford anything but knowledge is still king. The more you know the more you learn.

I’ve got a Ruger SR556 and love it! The first (and only) piston AR I’ve ever owned. It’s got a SLIGHT more recoil that a DI but so unnoticeable I don’t understand the dudes that complain about it! I like that it doesn’t shit where it eats!

I don't know what the issue was with the M249 SAW. I was a saw gunner and only had one failure out of all the years. It was during a fire team rush course. Somehow a round got behind the action. When I removed the round, I never had another issue. It was twice as heavy as a M4, but I really didn't notice.

I have a similar concept version of this i assembled on the cheaper side. Using one of my lowers with a Franklin armory Binary trigger i put together a Bear creek arsenal 20in heavy fluted barrel and a standard low profile gas block pinned. Its really for fun i didn't go expensive with it since its not something I'd use for anything serious unless a mob of people came to my neighborhood or Chinese dropping from the sky.

After getting my first few cans. I realized quickly how fast my DI guns get dirty. I've been looking for a piston gun. Some of the weights on piston guns is ridiculous compared to DI. I've been looking at the caracal 816. Which was made by the engineers who made the HK416 and Sig 516. PWS has also been on my shortlist. Or I can get a sionics upper with EGRP. Might have to look into this.
I really must have that DI gas tube.
