  • Does it also happen to you that you return from a landscape photography trip where you had the feeling of taking the best photo in the world, just to realise you made one of those “doh” composition mistakes, that you totally should have avoided in the field but you got carried away in the situation because everything just aligned and your brain went out the window? Or have you experienced to be super proud of a photo, just to have another photographer point out one tiny thing about the photo and now you can’t unsee it? Although perfection is the enemy of good and there are many arguments against trying to achieve perfection in art, just watch my friend James Popsys video on that topic, I for one, with my art, strive for a visually aesthetically optimal photo with both my composition and editing, an almost graphical cleanness.

You are a terrific photographer (the best in my opinion). I suppose the nitpicking of this video is why you are so good, but I think you are being way too hard on yourself. In every one of your examples, I think the “errors” you point out are not an issue for me. All the best.😊

Hey Mads, it so nice to share your so-called mistakes, we all learn from what frustrates you. And personally I think all these shots are little work of arts , so beautiful! The one example I agree on most is maybe the cut off lakes from the people in front of the vulcano. On the other hand, it is also on the experience and the moment. Going back to a tree in the woods is much easier than going back to an active vulcano. I can imagine your adrenaline flowing taking this vulcano shots!

I found myself chuckling throughout this video, Mads. Insanely good photos without exception, and whilst your critiques were interesting and informative the key phrase was "I really really like it..." ! And that's what counts more than anything! Striving for that"perfect" shot is very much part of the fun 😊 Great video 👏

From the examples you shown, there are time when it's a slight mistake in the composition like the lone tree with the branches to close to the horizon. And there are times when you really can't do anything with the balance of the subject simply due to nature. The photos of the hills un Denmark with the fog, nothing you can do about the empty space on the left. If you had framed more to the right, the tree at the centre would have been 'off centre' and it would have looked weird. So my feeling is that there are 'errors' of composition and unbalanced scene because of the nature.
    Great video. Was great.

Crikey when did you come to our local camera club and go through a judging session! Whilst I agree it’s good to review what you re doing we should be focusing on the positive and not anally picking on the negative which removes all the joy. I’ve been to photo exhibitions by well regarded photographers and on display are images that I would have put in the bin….. Nature is mostly not perfectly symmetrical so patterns of tress do not have to be either. 😊

I absolutely can relate to so much of what you say in this video. Example: I spent a lot of time photographing 2 different pieces of ice at Breiðamerkursandur. When I got home and started working on post-processing, I decided I had picked pieces of ice with unappealing shapes. They were lumpy and interesting, but just didn't look right in the frame no matter how I tried to crop or which angle I picked. (Can I blame you for this, since despite having bought your ebooks, this wasn't something you warned me about? Ok. Probably not.)

The real problem is recognizing the mistake on site. This is especially the case when a slight change of camera perspective is required. Much can repaired in post - focus, light distribution, colors, objects removed. But shifting the camera 3 ft to the left, right, up or down to line things up differently can only be done on site. The only thing you can do as an aftermath is to cry into your pillow.

Mads your mistakes are much smaller than mine. I often get back home and review my images from a shoot and say what was I thinking when I took this photo. It looked great at the time but it just didn’t work once I got into editing. I think often we rush around to make sure we don’t miss the great light during sunrise or sunset and don’t think through the composition. I am also guilty of wanting to move to another location to capture a different shot rather than perfecting the one I had been working on.

It's your pursuit of excellence that makes you who you are. Us mere mortals, in general, can only hope to get the same results as yourself on a constant basis. We all have different levels of ability and, I believe, we should all be trying to improve our skills. If you come up with a stunning shot be proud of it, even if it's not a masterpiece. I'm actually really happy to learn that even masters like Mads have these tiny things that bug you in the photos of your portfolio. I do think a perfectionist mindset allows you to even be able to spot those things, which makes you more aware in the field on what to avoid. I think perfection in art is an impossibility but the pursuit is definitely something that seperates the great from the mediocre.

Definitely relate to this Mads and we are, as they say, our worst critics. Probably my most frustrating moment was coming back from Valencia and noticing my alignment on a symmetrical architectural image was off by a couple of millimetres so when I returned to Spain a few months later, I took a 2 and a half hour journey back to Valencia from where I was staying, so I could rectify the mistake I made. Like yourself when you see something that catches your eye, it's very difficult to unsee it, so if I can revisit a location to reshoot it, then normally I give in to the frustration and return 🙂

Mads, you have a true artist's eye! The only mistake I don't agree with you is the drone shot at 7:28. To me, the individual trees atop the ridge on the left, above the field, and the play of shadow and light in the field, balances the grove on the right. I find it quite pleasing. To me, it doesn't have to match the other side. Lovely photos all. Cheers from the USA.

Is nice to be "by the book" sort of saying, when taking photos... but most of the time I go for the feel of the image instead of rules. If it makes me happy and a like it, or it brings back some good memory, then I can "forgive" the fact that it doesn't really goes "by the book". I have loads of photos like this 😁. But is so true... once you see the "mistake" ... that is all you see in that photo 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

  • @paulbenson3441
    @paulbenson3441 Před 4 měsíci

I think Mads with certainty I have flaws in all my photographs, especially ones taken over the past couple of months. I've been trying to free myself of the tripod as much as possible and this has been a good move for me. I'm now coming home with many more shots in the bag. I'm able to react more quickly to changing lighting or weather conditions. Of course, composition takes a back seat as I'm trying to capture that special moment which I know is just is going to change without warning. To get by the composition problem I usually take two extra shots, one on either side of the main image then merge them together as a panorama, and crop back to the image I was after. It doesn't always work well that way, but sometimes I do get something that I'm happy with; even though I know that probably the composition is still wanting to be tweaked more. When do you stop tweaking? I suppose I'm okay with a few compositional errors as long as they don't detract from the pleasure of that moment when I was standing before the image, camera in hand and thinking 'I must capture this one, it's beautiful.' If I can get my capture as near to what I remember seeing, and feeling, I think I'm okay with that. It's a difficult one Mads because we all look at the same image with different eyes and different thoughts. Perhaps that is the magic of photography.

It’s so close though and the rest of the photo certainly makes up for it.
Funny enough it has a road sign saying “closed to public use “ in this epic desert landscape and I say to my wife “James Popsys called “ and I spent maybe 30 seconds getting the photo. The sign is not perfectly center but it’s close.

Too hard on yourself Mads, we should all strive for excellence but it very rarely happens, especially when in the field with conditions constantly changing. One question, have you ever taken in image that you DIDN’T feel could be improved ? I don’t think I have and probably never will and even if I did, someone else would probably find fault. You say yourself you can live with the tiny little faults because the images are so special, personally I’m happy with that 😉

Here are some different points of view that might help:
    - Wabi-Sabi: The Japanese Art of Finding the Beauty in Imperfections. Rather than find faults in cracks, tears and other imperfections, the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi encourages us to appreciate that nothing is truly perfect or permanent.
    - In Islamic architecture, the design often included deliberate mistakes as a show of humility by artists who believe that only God can produce perfection.
    - "I hope you're plagued with dissatisfaction your whole life, that way you'll always strive to do better." - "The Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross
    - One day, when you are too old to go out in the wind and the rain, you can take up painting, and fix these "mistakes".
    - If you can photoshop out the chimneys, you can photoshop out the lower leaves, make the branch thinner, and the ice shorter. Painters improve on real life all the time, why not photographers?
    - Photography is a hobby - it's about enjoying yourself, so do what makes you happy. If that includes some creative editing, go for it!

I agree with all your assessments but I think there is a point where you are just splitting hairs. Regarding the image where you didn't get the separation between the tree and the field is an example. I absolutely see your point but the image without the separation you wish you had achieved is still a beautiful image. The image where you were unhappy with the heather not having grown in or being a more desirable colors is an example a a problem that I constantly encounter. I have a preference for horizontal images. I tend to look at things more as architectural sections or elevations. Unfortunately that means I constantly include all kinds of things that have no relevance to what I want to capture. Very often the only solution is dramatic horizontal cropping with 2:1, 3:1 or greater ratios. I like them but most people won't make the effort to look at images with significant horizontal proportions. Regarding your image with the houses and chimneys I again see your point but I don't think those houses detract from the image at all they are just part of the scene. I wonder why you didn't try to lower your camera rather than move but of course now I'm just being too picky. I enjoyed the video. It was very interesting and helpful.

Do you find that part of the issue with "mistakes" you make in a composition as you take the photo is due to the small screen size on cameras?
