    Since mid-2017, China has been operating a military base in Djibouti. For many countries, the Republic of Djibouti has become the central anchor point in the region. It hosts military bases from France, the United States, Japan, Italy and, since 2017, China. No other country in the world has so many foreign bases. The fact that so many countries want to be present here has to do with the location, which is important for a lot of reasons. And it is one rare spot where the US and China, two nations tangled in a growing rivalry, are just 10 kilometres apart from each other.
    Music from Artlist.io
    Further Information at the end of the video.
    Why does the channel have a new name?
    As you may have noticed, the channel has changed its name from "Society of Geeks" to "neo".
    And to make this clear: It's not about a change of ownership, it's just taste.
    When I launched the channel almost 3 years ago, I would have never thought the videos would get the attention they now have. The initial scope of the types of topics were very limited but now has expanded. The channel was thought to deal primarily with analysing films but now they have become more political. And the name should have the flexibility to fit for both aspects, as well as for any genres in the future that I can’t even think of right now.
    And with this new name, it feels right to approach the next goals and really develope the channel into something exciting.
    Thanks for your understanding.

      I mean I fucking hate America too but I don't think we should ignore what China is doing, neoliberalism is bad under literally any flag. Doesn't help that China is a lot more predatory with its measure either e.g. when they built a port in sri-lanka and charged them way too much and then when Sri Lanka couldn't pay them back they just were like 'ok it's ours now' and they filled it with Chinese workers. Like they literally took one of the best chances for Sri Lanka to eventually fully develop itself away from them.

    • @ioioire4684
      @ioioire4684 Před 4 lety +6

      Oh also, whilst US neoliberalism is usually run by businesses separate from and typically trying to circumvent the rules of the government, all big companies in china (the ones which are able to globally expand) are directly managed by the Chinese government so its expansionism represents far greater power than anything else. Cause like two Chinese companies working abroad will help each other because they're literally run by the same thing, American companies would try to outcompete the other.

    This could be a big opportunity for Djibouti in making revenue through foreign investments which is caused by the heavy foreign investments from militaries around the world. But this is also risky for Djibouti as it makes heir economy be heavily reliant on other countries & if a war breaks out with the countries that have bases in Djibouti, that might cause heavy tensions with the region. Not only that, having heavy foreign control over important & strategic parts of the country can make Djibouti have struggles in independent sovereignty from foreign forces.

Countries owe China because it brings about a positive, and forward-thinking element to its economy, while on the other hand, everyone just be wary of the American military might to revolt against their rule.

No one pointed a gun to their head and force them to sign the papers. There are also benefits when people sign on with China such as building roads, hospitals, schools, electricity grids, and industries and often times, it is for free or incredibly cheap. Why does China do this? Because its soft power. They know that if something comes up in the country such as the discovery of natural resources, the country would be more welcoming to the Chinese. In my opinion, this is a far far far better solution than to bomb or intimidate or overthrow the governments. China doesn't combine business with its military like what the US does.
