  • Hey I'm back and I'm here to explain a Lupin the Third Iceberg meme.
This video took a lot longer than I thought it would. This Channel isn't dead I just have a full time job now.
I just noticed that in the Mystery of Mamo segment I said 1987 instead of 1978. I am sorry for the mix up. Also Part 6 has now been officially announced therefore dating this video like a week after I uploaded it.

    Corrections and Updates
I have noticed that some of the lines in the video are almost word for word from ShannonStrucci's review of the first. This was not done on purpose, but I had seen the video before writing the script. So I would like to apologise for that.
I accidently said Mystery of Mamo came out in 1987 instead of 1978. I had the right year written down in the script, I just mixed up the numbers while recording without realising it.
I said that the pilot was made to pitch a TV series, I was wrong. The pilot was pitching a movie, it didn't work out. The pilot was pitched again but this time for TV (with a different aspect ratio and new voice actors). This lead the Part 1. For more info check out this page on Lupin Central.
    www.lupincentral.com/home/lupin-iii-the-pilot
I said that Zenigata Robo was exclusive to the Pachinko Machines but he has made an appearance in one of the manga. twitter.com/tabbiewolf/status/1409857476208455688
Kogoro Akechi isn't just some random character. His's a fictional detective that's been about since 1925. Which is pretty funny, it's like if I made a comic and the first chapter had Columbo in it and I never bring it up again for the rest of the series.
Part 6 got announced a week after I uploaded this video. It even has an episode written by Oshii, that was a nice surprise.
Gecsi_ has made a google drive folder with everything related to Lupin the 8th. The pilot, the untranslated manga, animation from the unfinished episodes. Check it out if you're interested. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eGX_L3r3I-TugFL0t7v2zjDTMAmqbyCU

I thought that i was a Lupin buff, and for almost all the early entries, and was nodding my head along and going "Wow this series has done a lot and i can't believe how much i know!"
But when the god damn laser-disk movie poster spoof stuff popped up, and i actually blew the tea i was drinking out my nose! I was shocked at this revelation, and at the pain i was feeling due to having decently hot tea in my nostrils. After that was over, i searched up if this shit was real, and had my mind blown at the existence of this stuff. This gold mine of Lupin media, i never tapped into had me floored on many levels.
Even after the point passed, it stayed with me for awhile as i sat there like that rock Nimoy talked to. Even if i knew about some of the even later, more obscure and weird, entries, this one stuck.
Thank you for making this really well put together and thorough iceberg; hope you have a nice day, and keep up the good work. Can't wait for part 6!

As someone from Italy I would like to further expand the lore which was already established in your video related to Lupin's influence over here: at 15:22 the singer's name is Moreno Donadoni a rapper/singer wannabe and along with Young Signorino one of the most hated musician currently in Italy, Moreno's rap had a huge backlash in Italy because during the song he purposely does the spelling of his own name as well as other vanity words for himself, the backlash was so bad that when they aired the series Mediaset (the network responsible for airing Lupin in Italy) got numerous complaints and letters to fire him as quickly as possible as well as changing the opening, the other singer that continues the song instead at 15:32 is Giorgio Vanni which contrary to Moreno is a well respected songwriter and guitarist, he's the one mostly responsible for many openings and endings for both anime and cartoons in Italy with the Dragon Ball Openings being regarded as ones of his best work. At 44:57 that's Roberto Del Giudice who was the official voice actor of Lupin from 1979 to 2007, he unfortunately passed away at 67 years old with Angel's Tactics being the last Lupin related media he worked on, his successor and current VA for Lupin is Stefano Onofri which has been voicing Spiderman in any form of media from 1967 toward the beginning of the 2000, with the Raimi trilogy being the first Spiderman related media to start casting different VA for the same character.

I'm really surprised heiji zenigata wasn't in here, the man koichi zenigata is decended from, I looked into it and heiji was a really popular fictional character started as detective novels and eventually had several shows with an insane number of episodes, can't remember exactly but it's in the hundreds. Although I haven't found many on CZcams and they are all from the 50s to the 70s I believe.
In the episode in part 2 computer vs lupin they make a reference with one of the coins heiji used, and in prison of the past show zenigata accurecly throwing buttons to hit a keypad implying he's really good at throwing things. (Of course that includes handcuffs)

Interesting enough in both Part 1, The Mystery of Mamo and the Pilot Zenigata's name is "Heiji Zenigata VII" later on it was changed to "Kõichi Zenigata" (I am unsure why the name was changed). It's nice when they reference it (like in the examples you mentioned above) even though it's not brought up as much as Lupin's and Goemon's, ancestry.

"銭形平次捕物帖/Zenigata Heiji Torimono-Hikae (casebook)" is a very popular histrical mystery/action series by Nomura Kodo/野村胡堂, published between 1931 and 1957, total of 383 long and short stories. It is set in some time during Edo Era (it changes by story -- 1600~1800?), Heiji is one of the non-samurai head crime investigators who works for the city's chief officer. He, as someone said, uses coins to throw on violent criminals. (Acording to Wiki.)

I've seen so many people talk about how the Fujiko series is the series most true to the manga when in fact those Mankatsu shorts are pretty much 90% manga Lupin. It's clear they've never read the manga.

I was in shock when I started reading and it was just the most off-the-walls western style comic with no sense or reason rlly lol-- not that its bad !! it's just...not the kind of "dark" i was expecting lol

It's always nice to learn something new about Lupin. I recently watched a german version of Castle of Cagliostro that was only released on VHS back in the day. To my surprise they changed a bunch of things around...Lupin is now called Hardyman (Voiced by the same guy who voiced the TV Character ALF in Germany btw.), Jigen is called Dan-Dee, Fujiko is now called Cathrin and Zenigata is now Ed Scott. Oh and Goemon? They completely cut him out of the movie. Weird watching a version like that, but to be honest...if I saw this version before I even knew Lupin 3rd, I still would have liked it, because the movie just works fine.

You know, when I was introducing my dad to Lupin The third and getting into the series media and everything, I have a Ghibli Movie collection and it came with Castle Of Cagliostro.
While watching it, my dad literally mentioned how Lupin is a lot like Inspector gadget, well now I know and he knows why too because I told him from what you said in the iceberg.
Spot on! (He also told me that Don Adams voiced in inspector gadget and as a classics fan, I know him as the actor for Maxwell Smart in get Smart).
I think what would be awesome Special Crossovers of lupin would be if they did a crossover of inspector gadget and lupin, that would be cool and probably make a joke of Lupin the eighth too.

Some fun random facts about Lupin III in Italy:
The various series and specials gave suffered a bit from censorship during the years. This is mainly because of the whole "anime is animated, ergo it's safe to broadcast it on daytime television" stigma that still isn't completely gone here. Some of them DO have integral dubs that were only censored during broadcasts (or later uncut redubs), others unfortunately don't.
Zenigata has an Italian-only nickname given to him by Lupin, "Zazà", that replaces the Japanese "tottsan" (your "Pops").
Goemon is and has almost always constantly been mispronounced as "Gae-mon" by EVERYONE.
Despite most series and movies keeping her original name, basically everyone over the age of 40 remembers Fujiko only by her Part 2-only dub name "Margot".
While the most iconic Italian opening was the one used for Part 3 (Lupin, the incorrigible Lupin), Part 1 is remembered for using the obscure song Planet O as its opening. Which is a song about aliens kidnapping and essentially molesting a human girl. This is because literally nobody in Italy understands English, so a random English song is as good as any other.
Italy has actually gotten a PS2 game that was released NOWHERE ELSE, "Lupin is dead, Zenigata is in love".
Lupin's first (and most iconic) voice actor Roberto del Giudice sadly passed away back in 2007, one of his last works being the third and definitive dub of Castle of Cagliostro. He's ever since been replaced by Stefano Onofri, who's almost identical to him.

    and the strange one ....
    Goemon = Ramón....the samurai

I’ve decided to rewrite my original comment cause it was really bad ngl.
lastflunky I’ve been a fan of your content since I first saw your Cagliostro video, not only did you improve my shitty iceberg meme but like 100X but you also expanded upon entries that I didn’t give much thought too, not only that but you even included information I didn’t know about when creating the original iceberg, I just can’t express how delighted I was when I first saw this video, your editing skills are godly.
Some issues with my iceberg that I want to address the entry about Lupin IV was ment to be about Lupin VIII, I’m not sure how cause in my early drafts and notes for the iceberg it was spelt correctly but I must have accidentally misspelled it.
I’m but no means a Lupin expert in fact I’ve only seen part 4 and 5 , (and a few movies) which is why they are mentioned so frequently in the iceberg, a lot of the information used was stuff I found on old blogs and fan sites and I was simply regurgitating information I had found, a lot of stuff that I didn’t include for example, The lost part 1 master tapes and Zenigata robo was due to not being aware of them when making the original iceberg.
(Sorry for any spelling mistakes and how long my comment is, I just really liked your video)

that's only the first scrapped proposal of Oshii from what I read, the, second one also the one that got him fired from the project is more like Green vs Red but even weirder, it said in it Lupin never existed he's an illusion shared and maintained by the gang and Zenigata, and when Lupin needs to physically appear, them and Zenigata take term disguise as Lupin.
welp that's as much as I can make out of what I read about it.

    The references are
    The hair of Lupin
    Barely beard of Jigen
Goemon and His handsome face and hair
The only characters still same are Fujiko and Zenigata
but during the production in the middle of the series it was changed to the Cartoon mode like Looney Tunes, looking more like the manga and it would remain that way until the end and in the film of Gold of Babylon

Cliff Hanger was actually my introduction to Lupin. Played it for hours, even though the game had a glitch where it would get stuck & then go back in the game. So, I never got to see the ending. Anyway, it was about 6 or 7 years later, when I saw the Castle of Cagliostro VHS & on the cover was Lupin climbing the castle & I was like "This is that Cliff Hanger game!" So, I bought the movie & to this day Lupin is my favorite anime of all time.

Now Spielberg had said that The Car Chase Scene in Castle of Cagliostro was so incredible that it could never be surpased. (paraphrasing it). That he praised it on a blurb on the VHS release. Spielberg couldn't get the the rights to Lupin on his own but cleverly had SKG DreamWorks make The Road to El Dorado. Claiming at the time it was an homage to "The Road" films of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby (to avoid a Lawsuit from The Le Blanc Estate. Creator of Lupin The Gentlemen Thief)
Miguel and Tulio are Lupin & Jigen (I forget which gets the girl). El Tivo is Goemon since he worked with Cortez first, like how Zenigata first hired Goemon. While Chel is The Every Woman Fujiko. During the late 90's only. Fujiko and Goemon teamed up and got away with some of the Treasure...just like the end of The Road to El Dorado.
