  • Today is the federal holiday that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was born January 15, 1929. He was assassinated April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was just 39 years old. While Dr. King is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader, he also championed the cause of the poor and organized the Poor People's Campaign to address issues of economic justice. Dr. King was also a fierce critic of U.S. foreign policy and the Vietnam War. We play his "Beyond Vietnam" speech, which he delivered at New York City's Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, as well as his last speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop," that he gave on April 3, 1968, the night before he was assassinated.

MLK will always be a hero to me. Even tho I'm a woman, Canadian and white. He fought for civil rights and when a person fights for civil rights for themselves or someone else; in the end, they are fighting for civil rights for everyone. We still have a ways to go. A lot farther than I realized until Trump ran for prez. Inequality isn't a problem with anyone but those white people who still use their power and privilege to deprive others of equality. Blacks have done everything to move forward. This is a problem white people need to address. Out in the open and behind closed doors. We need to be more courageous and call out ignorance and bigotry.

This remarkable speech of our dear Dr. King is timeless. America, clearly, has not matured in these 54 years since his oratory in 1967 and continues, more than ever, in refusing to learn lessons from history. Dr. King's foresight regarding both foreign and domestic issues proves one thing, He is truly a Prophet of God. His formula, Gandhi's formula of peaceful protest and resistance while expressing unconditional love is required...now! Bless you, Dr. Martin Luther King.🙏

Change just a few names and dates and this speech could have been given last week. With that - one would be tempted to think no transformation has taken place since that time. Where our 'leaders' are concerned, that would be true. But, I think Chomsky is correct when he says the population has become more civilized. King, among many other strugglers, is largely responsible for that.
So now, a man who self identifies as 'socialist' is within striking distance of the oval office. That would have been impossible in '67. We've changed. Now, it's time to get representatives who reflect that. The Squad et al, and Bernie 2020 are a good start.

Tiny hands, tiny heart, super-tiny penis, and non-existent conscience. Kind of impressive, though, how well his tiny brain (seemingly consisting mostly of reptilian core) reads and plays his 'marks' when he's on his game (i.e., when he isn't losing his s**t all over the place, which is most of the time). Impressive like a chicken playing the piano--only not as entertaining and a helluva lot more dangerous. I know! He's cunning like the Gorn in Star Trek (whom I suddenly picture with a yellow combover), but with bonespurs. And tiny hands.

A country honours him but can that same country truly state that all that Martin Luther King Jr. fought for have been embedded into everyday society??
Sadly not. Perhaps America is much more divided.
May the spirit of MLK never depart from the hearts of the warriors who stand today fighting for social and economic justice. For those who fight for racial recognition and reparations.
    RIP MLK

5british5: MLK stood for justice for the segregated and marginalized. Only ignorance or a deep misunderstanding of what black people experienced during slavery will lead anyone to say reparations to the descendants of slaves isn’t (economic) justice.
I’m sure if MLK were alive today he would be spearheading that struggle. Just as he did for his people, the people of Vietnam, and the poor.

It’s alright. I can’t argue with your thought process for saying what you’re saying. It’s hard to look through another lens but of yourself. So it’s alright.
Have you ever thought that who we are or what we’ve become is a result of our experiences?
I don’t expect an answer but just another “rational” explanation. And you know why? Cause it’s just a deep misunderstanding

There will be many who wear the mask of Martin Luther King. We are going to need that again in this brutal time in the USA.

👩🏽‍🦱 Hopefully, justice will be served in those cases and other cases of murder by (supposed) police officers.
