  • The carillonneur at work in Cobh Cathedral, Cobh, Co. Cork. At seven minutes long, it's well worth a look. This is what the general public never get to see, but can hear all over the town of Cobh.

The carillon bells always remind me of Christmas time, it doesn't matter what song they play.

We were at Cobh last week and talked to the docent at the cathedral. Two of the carillonneur's grandchildren are learning the art.

The very bells that welcomed Laurel & Hardy to Ireland in 1953.

What a very interesting post: As an organist, I can draw parallels, but playing your instrument looks WAY more energetic!

Thanks Maidstone, your own bells at Kent were very interesting also. A lot harder to play as it requires a commitment from a greater number of people rather than just one at Cobh. Well done.

+Ringer Jake as I said earlier, this is not a forum for your squabbles, use your own page if you wish to indulge in this behaviour, and that goes for both of you. I find it utterly disgusting that both of you chose to behave in this manner and use a page that has nothing to do with you to air your personal immature grievances. To put it mildly, piss off somewhere else!

Hi Adarsh, there is a practice console in the tower that is identical to the main key board, except it does not connect to the bells. It produces it's own sound within the practice cabin.

I would suppose that the bells are
music to one's ears. In the U.S.people are generally more susceptible and willing to listen to (GARBAGE) i.e. rock music. In
      extremely loud speakers that kill
the ears. And irritate some of us
      older folks. lol PEACE!

@@johnrobinson6809 At this point, rock and roll the genre is almost 70 years old that started with the likes of Buddy Holly and Bill Haley. I wonder how old you must be.

Is this the instrument that's also played in epic music I usually hear in. There are some epic music I listen to that have those epic bells in the background and I wonder if this is the one that they use?

Are any CD's available to purchase of the Cobh Cathedral carillon do you know, I would like to purchase one. I have a small collection of carillon CD's and having seen other youtube video's of this particular carillon I think it is an incredibly fine instrument.
    Many thanks.
