Micki Free on Meeting Prince, Joining Shalamar, Looking Like a Girl

- Legendary guitarist, Micki Free shares his upbringing living in Germany before ultimately getting discovered by Gene Simmons of KISS. In this exclusive interview, Micki tells us how Simmons introduced him to-then girlfriend-Diana Ross, who was looking for a Prince-esque artist to sign in 1980. Eventually, Micki began touring with Ross and was later convinced by Simmons to join the group Shalamar. Shortly after, he tells us, Prince became interested in him joining his band Mazarati, however, he wasn't allowed out of his contract with Shalamar for the big move.
As Micki explains emulating his "androgynous" look from Jimi Hendrix, he also discusses what actually happened the night he was escorted out of Prince's party after nabbing too much attention from the ladies.

Wow, it is good to see Micki Free again. He always has good stories to share. I'll never forget the one when he mentioned that he was at a party, and needed a ride home, and Michael Jackson offered to drive him himself! He was shock to see that Michael actually drove, and did not have a chauffer! lol. Mr. Free is proudly showing his Native American heritage with his clothing. Love him!

Micki Free is 61, he looks good! Notice the Prince necklace. Micki forgot to mention Rick James. Rick was doing the unapologetic black musician thing before Prince. As a matter of fact Prince used to be the opening act for Rick on his Fire It Up Tour in 1980 and accused Prince of stealing his style, they had an entertaining feud.
Prince had a different sound electro funk ...much tighter sound than Ricks funk.

Same here I was born June 1982, I always been a music fan I started watching MTV and VH1 when I was 3 or 4, I remember crushing on Prince, Micki free, I guess that is why at 36 I still have weird taste in men.

Micki Free was in the group Shalamar he played the guitar riff on "Dancing in the sheets". He was a player and married Actress Terri Copley who starred in a sitcom in the 80s and set to be the next blonde sex symbol. When she married and had a child with Micki she was blackballed. Micki has a cool vibe in this interview.

I appreciate Micki being upfront and transparent about his musical path. Its also clear that he took Diana Ross & Gene Simmons' advice about the music biz very seriously, and parlayed that knowledge into career that has sustained him to this day. Very interesting. Good stuff.

It was common knowledge in the 80's that Diana Ross & Gene Simmons were a couple...Also that Little Richard would state Prince was copying his style/ influence by his character of himself...these stories were front page in the 80's.
Man, I would have loved to have seen Micki starred in Prince's film "Coco Boys" especially after hearing the song.
