- A short video showing the route from Stalybridge to Piccadilly via Guide Bridge. Its the Up direction on the Huddersfield line as far as Guide Bridge West Junction and from there on its the Down Main/Down East approach to Piccadilly.

A nice trip and a perfect length for lunchtime viewing. I have a question regarding the stops: I know some trains are designated 'nonstop' and just go on through stations, where other routes stop. If you were driving a route that had planned stops, but the system didn't have any fares bought at those stops, would you continue on through, or stop anyway?
No, if the stop is on the schedule we always stop even if no-one gets off or on. Basically the operating company is contracted by the government to provide that service. On occasions it appears there is no-one waiting but we stop and they appear out of a shelter or from outside the gate if they’ve gone to smokers corner. In that case, if we didn’t collect them it would be classed as a “fail to call”.

With the TRU programme, it says it'll electrify from Stalybridge to Victoria, but will the line to Picc also get electrified as it looks as though most of it is already electrified through the West Coast mainline?
It’s already electrified to Guide Bridge but they are well and truly on with electrification between there and Stalybridge which will complete it. Try and watch next Wednesday’s “Huddersfield Stopper” video 👍

sad to see the old woodhead supporting poles still there but not in use, i hope they dont get removed and are kept as a reminder to the railway that they used to support
Some of them are in use as gantries on the way out this way from PIccadilly, you might even see them on this video...
From about 4:22 you can see them being used for the overhead line.

I don’t sign it any more. I used to be a driver at Buxton and Wigan NW was a diversion for us both via Atherton and via Westhoughton. When I was driver manager, I was authorised to assess drivers and instructors over the route.
Great stuff Don. Do you ever get out on the Swinton - Walkden - Atherton line? Used to travel to school and Southport excursions when there were four tracks and water troughs between Moorside and Walkden. Lived in New Zealand for quite a while so it would be great to see what it's like now.
I don’t sign it any more as that was essentially a northern route. I used to sign Blackpool from Buxton and that was a diversion for us.

Yes, I sign the Calder Valley. We mainly use it through the night for route retention but occasionally at weekends if there is engineering via Diggle. Rest assured I’ll film it if I get the chance but it may be next year on lighter days if I don’t get diverted.
Thanks for another fascinating video! What a horrible bit of main-line railway the Stalybridge to Guide Bridge section is! And this also clearly shews how completely wrong the new Stalybridge layout is now that the principal route is once again to and from Victoria.
The routes are getting old now and were originally laid to thread their way around Manchester.
Don, You've done it again! Is this another video from a driver at Northern? This time no captions particularly as l wanted to know the station which had a grassed over platform along half of its length. What qualifies as a tunnel, does rafted over stores and offices count. I remember a similar set up at Wimbledon on LSWR (the present one) which does not count as a tunnel but a large bridge.

Tunnels tend to be bored but can sometimes be “cut and shut” where they the build the tunnel then bury it.

I can’t do that any more as I no longer work for Northern. I used to sign it and drive the 323s up there.

I remember in the 1980s the siding to the left with the severed turnout was not there. It obviously wasn't in use for long. Anyone know what the traffic was?
Yes, it was the Atochem siding and was used by the chemical works for distribution.
Did I see a few old 1500v dc overhead portals?
You did, yes. Most of them between Ardwick and Guide bridge are original and a few unwired ones still exist. I’m told but can’t verify it, that the contact wire is still the original which is slightly wider in diameter on that line right up to Hadfield and Glossop.

Yes, all part of that set up that supported the Woodhead route.

Around 4:53, there is a branch line that diverges to the left. Where does it go?
It's what's left of the line from Guide Bridge to Stockport via Denton and Heaton Norris. It was four-tracked for much of its length by about 1900 but was severely rationalised down to mostly single-track in "modern times". The line used to support a frequent paytrain link (latterly using a "bubblecar") from Stalybridge to Stockport Edgeley until the late '80s when it became unnecessary.
On this video, if you look carefully, you can see a remaining trace (the overbridge on the left at 1.28) of the LNWR's "Guide Bridge avoiding line" that branched off just outside Stalybridge to run on its own viaduct up to Dukinfield, then used a steeply-graded embankment to go under the Glossop line at Guide Bridge then ascended via a tunnel up to Denton Junction from where its double tracks ran on through Reddish and up to Heaton Norris.Much of it was redundant by the '50s and the bridges and viaducts at the Stalybridge-Dukinfield end were removed in the '70s.

Shame no more trains stop at Ashton (Or Ashton-Under-Lyne for it's full name), making Ashton another under-utilized station. Ashton used to be a decent station serving Huddersfield and Wakefield but now it's just served by Stalybridge Up bound trains and Wigan down bound trains.
