Box Battle is a series of Magic: The Gathering CZcams videos that seeks to answer two questions: what would happen if we played through every single set of Magics history and who would be named its champion at the end of it? Well, Charlie "MoistCr1tikal" "penguinz0", Matt, Ryan, and Drew are doing exactly that, playing through some modified sealed/limited rules for the commander format, almost close to brawl. The game works like this:
Open a box of magic cards that hasn't been opened yet
Each player gets an amount of cards to build a 60 card deck out of, naming a commander along the way (which can be any creature, not restricted to legendary creatures)
Play a game and give points out based on placements, 3 for first, 2 for second, 1 for third, and 0 for last. Also the player that opens the most expensive card gets a point for free.
Eventually we will have played through all of the sets and at the end the player with the most points will be crowned the best magic player in the world, unquestionably. Along the way we'll laugh, we'll cry, and maybe we will have a few guests in the mean time. Stay tuned!!
Charlie playing mtg is never something I thought i needed until I had it
I was amongst a group telling him to play for yearsssss. he played yugioh first.
Hes going to go through the entire series
Same. I know nothing about mtg, I would occasionally watch matches when they came on TV and there was nothing else on, but was never actually interested until watching these commander games
samewe
It brought him from my favorite source of tea to my favorite person
the masterpiece sol ring goes hard! moist and his crew have insane luck
That’s the nuts best hit!
is it a normal box or collector?
@@floki6548 Should be normal, dont believe collectors boxes existed back then, only remember the masterpieces being seeded in normal boxes rarely
The fact he pulled a masterpiece at all is crazy, the fact it was the Sol Ring which is like the second most expensive is even more crazy, then he had the guts to put that $800 card in his deck to play and some how manage to draw it on turn 1, only to have it destroyed before he can even untap with it is some of the craziest luck I've ever seen.
@@TypicalOtaku Yep, one in four boxes. There's also 54 of them. Sol ring is at the top financially together with manacrypt. So hitting this is like mindblowingly rare. Like 44/54 are still really cool, but sub $100. Crazy hit and for sure one of the coolest bling cards to own!
Matt, we love and forgive you. Never forget commander is a casual format.
I love that Matt keeps trying to get people to recognize the Tracey Chapman reference that no one else got.
Drew never gaining the energy from his commanders attack damage is sending me through the wall xd
the fact that he immediately forgot after remembering is so funny to me lmao
I was just about to comment this!! It was making me scream
I like these games because they feel like actual commander games you see at a shop. People get things wrong, have to back track etc. This almost surely happens in other commander shows, but they are edited out if possible
All these displays definitely proves we need more shock collars games lmao
1:01:48 In order to not pay 2 commander tax, Charlie spends 2B and a Card instead while forgetting the additional text of the card.
Marvelous gambit Mr. Charlie
it was actually a 4mana tax but he still did forget to bring an artefact to his hand also :p
Drew getting so upset while missing his triggers is classic magic
i think for the next box you should try drafting the packs so everyone gets access to cards that work with their decks
Wow, what a call on that pull in the beginning!
GREEEENNNN!!!!! In an izzet deck? Green?!?!?! That’s it bring back the shock collars for the entire series
Opening Kaladesh takes me back... to cracking so much of this stuff for masterpiece cards (when I should have been buying NVDA at a good price)... now we live in the full on variant days. What a strange trip it has been.
Cool seeing other MtG channels in these comments
Charlie missing all of his cambal triggers for vehicles ahahaha
matt, we love and forgive
i love it when they do instant speed things on their turn. so polite
"My turtle can't drive!" was the line that got me.
Great video, but did you know that in commander, when you are playing sealed, that all monocolored commanders are treated as having partner. This is so that you can play multiple colors even if you didn’t happen to open a multicolored commander. Should help for future videos
Not necessarily. This isn't a hard and fast rule
@@christopherreay3242"For Commander Masters drafts, all eligible commanders with one or less colors in their color identity are treated as if they have partner in a Commander draft. This rule was borrowed from the Commander cube draft community in order to allow players to draft cohesive decks without being tied to their early pick Commanders."
@@RM_3D not sure where that quote is from, but it applies specifically for Commander Masters. There were different rules in place for the two Commander Legends sets.
Don't get me wrong, it seems like a sensible rule, it's just not something that's automatically applied to something like this
@@christopherreay3242 it was added to commander masters draft rules because the set didn’t include legendary creatures with the partner mechanic like the previous commander draftable sets. So while you are correct that it isn’t a rule set in stone, it was the official way to draft for the only commander draftable set without partner. It stands to reason that if you wanted to try and draft every set in magics history (most of which not having partner) with the intention of creating a commander deck, that you would want to use this rule
Hitting a Masterpiece Sol Ring (after calling it, no less!) is fucking incredible.
matt we love and we forgive.
:)
This series is going to be so much fun to follow. Love the box break battles!
Kaladesh was so much fun and the masterpiece treatment is so iconic. I have toyed with making a Kaladesh + Aether Revolt CUBE with some of the Modern Horizon 3 Energy Cards thrown in
just got back into magic after not playing for about 6-7 years and watching has inspired me to play so thank you
same here, seeing charlie geek out on it reminded me of how much i missed it
17:42 Charlie's unironically funny response to Ryan's reaction to Charlie's commander, "Could you not?" XD
Creature enters tapped. Charlie reads this. Charlie ignores this. Charlie plays card normally untapped. Charlie learned nothing from the shock collar.
Charlie spending three mana to save a two mana commander tax is a huge flex.
it would of been 4 mana tax as its the second time its died, he would of cost 7
Heads up for future videos in this series. My playgroup does draft for commander instead of sealed. That way you can color fix way better and everyone has opportunities to grab legendary creatures. We sometimes do a pick two out of the first pick on a pack to further help people fine tune their decks. Everyone ends up having some great synergy this way. Some sets don't have many legends (we found this out recently with Ravnica RMR), so the any creature for commander is necessary sometimes.
The best pull on the wall after each draft idea goes so hard, Hope you guys do it!!
Congrats on the sol ring! I’m so hyped to see the best pull showcase at the end of the series! Especially after the serialized Cleopatra! Keep up the great work guys!
Keep this vids up for life man, absolutely love these!
I loved this, beginning to end, can't wait to see more next week!
13:59 just made me spill my drink... and the sol ring opening was epic too 4:53
love this format! Matt has a huge comeback on the way I can feel it...
This is a great series format! I'm building my first EDH deck for Leonardo Da Vinci. I bought the Angels and Cats and Dogs SL back when as well as the new MH3 Eldrazi deck, so I've just been jamming precons until now. Never a better time to get into the game
this channel is so awesome the reason i started playing magic about a month ago
I freakin' love the details in these edits, especially the one at 40:15
It got a good laugh out of me LOL
I FORGIVE YOU MAT, but you have to now take a shock from the dog collar.
Bro I can NOT get enough of these MTG videos, not to mention the DnD content. This channel is so sick
now THIS is a sick ass series! i approve, even if i would prefer normal limited lol
Awesome timing! Was just wondering when I would get to see my favorite Commander players suffer again.
I really like this video premise, id love to see episodes from interesting sets like unstable
I have a feeling a condensed version of this is making it to the main channel. That Sol Ring is insane
This channel is great thank you for getting me back into magic
this channel truly captures the best side of magic; the gathering with buds and shooting the shit. Awesome format
you guys need to do more of this soon please i get a box opening and a great game going after to watch it feels like the best of both worlds
The soul read on Sol Ring Masterpiece was hilarious.
You can still see Matt flinching like he's about to be shocked
Playing a box of every set is a really neat and ambitious idea, ill be watching every episodes !
Now this.. IS POD RACING!!
Speaking my language and playing my heart strings. Love limited formats 🥰. As Garfield intended! Do more of this please 🙏
Some suggestions for this box brawl: • No singleton rule • The player last in the turn order starts as the monarch to encourage combat further • Or even no commanders or color restrictions in the deck building and just play multiplayer magic 🪄 with 60 card decks.
You guys have NAILED the old school VHS aesthetic in the intros
This may be the most comical draft I have ever seen (Also Matt should have played his commander again for 5 energy)
Love the editing on these videos, good job
I cant explain how happy this channel makes me, I love every video. Mtg is my favorite game and I truly enjoy seeing my favorite internet personality big moist play ❤
Lets fucking goooooo new MTG video from the moist crew
Dude, I was gonna write that
After that sol ring i am so excited to watch the group openings in further episodes
Y’all should draft them instead of sealed! You’ll build more synergy into your decks because you are picking between more cards per player. More ability to build around your commander too.
Agree
Happy 100 skill check!
I loved watching this video , only thing that kept catching me up is that Matt didn’t pay to get the energy from his thopters entering 😂
I love this all of it even tho i dont have cards or play i know magic through these guys and getting to live vicariously through them wothout spending money is very entertaining cant wait for the rest of the box battles
Channel has not only both increased my love and interest in playing dnd and prompted me to make a character (just need to find a cool party) but as well gotten me into Magic. Currently trying to build out my first deck and learning the rules on how to play irl besides the online version
I would have been so proud of Matt if he realized how many thopters he could make with his commander and that enchantment
When he first created a thopter, it looked like Ryan was eyeing his board waiting for him to start shitting out thopters
So excited for this series!!
Seeing a game of commander with little to no commander staples is refreshing. Fair magic.
Matt, the lord never forgets. You have sinned, you get binned.
Charlie needs at least two players to stop him, he's a real Menace.
I love this series because there are so many sets that I never drafted and it's my favorite way to play.
you guys should put all the commanders in the middle and everyone can pick from them except you have priority to pick one of the ones you pulled first.
Format: Thopter war
God, kaladesh is the coolest block they ever designed
editor is doing fantastic with these edits
I love this channel so much, glad to have found it. Will these playmats ever be for sale?!?!
i chuckled at your fast car joke matt :)
Id recommend having everyone start with a Prismatic piper. I love the idea of using anything as a commander, the piper just allows you to have more color options
Man this channel is the best 😁
One Idea if no commander is pulled, can be to have the 4 worst commanders from the set and you get one at random. Adds to the best magic player ever idea
I would rather do how they did than this option, since the latter gives players 0 agency on the colors of the deck... anything besisdes it should be better actually...
@@kms199x2 I’m sure opening 9 booster packs gives you enough variety to make something work especially if you don’t pull any Legendary Creatures from those packs.
loving the mtg content! would be super cool to have a link to each players deck list in the description if it’s not too much of a hassle😉
As a suggestion, I think the way you did it with the “commander” being whatever creature is great! I would though suggest having life be 20 life or 30 instead of 40 to prevent late game stall situations
I get it the desire to want to play commander with the boxes but id honestly love to see these played in small 1v1 tournament style games. Not only is that more hype but it also means we get to see the sets shine in their natural habitats
Matt not realizing the amazing synergy between Era of Innovation and Whirler Virtuoso makes me sad! He had all that mana and could have produced so many Thopters throughout his turns!
33:59 , I really liked your Tracy Chapman joke Matt…I did.
These videos are always so entertaining
NEED more box battles
I love your MTG videos
Goats, appreciate all you guys.
I love skill checked mtg
I wondered about it when Matt played, it but didn't care. So all good!
the forest edit was amazing😂😂
Love the chemistry between these 4
I didn't know that selling cards have also games attached to them, that's so great
This really reminds me of boxing league. Awesome format thats usually too expensive for people (me) 😂 but I heard about it and this vid reminded me of it
Maybe for commanders each person can keep 1 of their choice from the cards they pull, and then if they pulled more than 1 the commanders they didn’t choose will go to a commander pool. Anyone who didn’t get a commander can then pull from that pool, rolling dice for priority picks. If there just aren’t enough commanders then continue like you did this time but maybe preemptively ban deathtouch and flying cards from becoming commanders for balance
to make sure yall always have a playable pool consider giving everyone a prismatic piper and let it partner with any legend.
I wish they would have explained deck building rules and brawl rules they are using even just briefly. This seems like a fun format to play
The way you guys should do it, i think, is by upgradinge decks with each box opening
Matt kinda reminds me of Mark Normand lol I love this content
You’re always forgiven Matt, we all love you!
yay charlie! that was a great game. also we love and forgive matt
Intro goes hard
Draft would be fun to watch
This was a great episode. Is the wheel going to be digital or a physical thing you spin for the booster box?
