  • In this video, a perfect example on how to try and try and try again to move up to the non-volley zone line. Third shots are not always successful allowing players to advance forward. If you fail, don't give up, keep trying. These players do a great job of doing just that.

Most of the people I play w/ aren't even TRYING to get to the NVZ when they're serving. Half of them don't even come to the line when rec'ving serve. They just love to drive drive drive. And, they're often good at overwhelming on that. And, they're really good at returning as long as it's not a corner shot in and out of the kitchen. And, when that happens there are a lot of groans. lol Finding the few folks who are working on their strategy and their PB game.

Sometimes it's all about power. No one wants to perfect their third shot drop. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Mostly former and current tennis players that don't grasp or care that there playing a different game. Use the 3rd shot drop and them and make them play your game.

Great video on hanging in there on third shots and subsequent drops. I have a Spin Shot, too. Great machine. Programmable. Well built. Doesn’t jam. When I use it I do at least a couple hundred third shots backhand and forehand all over the kitchen and then work on something else for a while. Since the Spin Shot is programmable it has me moving around for different shots. Third shots are fun to practice and challenging to get consistent at. The one cardinal rule I have learned is never, ever try one with your weight back and expect a good result. Gotta move your feet to be in position to make a good one.

I love my spin shot. I always start out hitting 100 third shot drops. My goal is to make 80% of them. Sometimes, it depends on the wind if I reach that percentage.

I just wish people knew how difficult it is to play with someone who drives it 90% of the time. My Saturday crew, the players all drive it and get mad when my partner and I (who do 3rd shots most of thr time) win hands down. I tell them, if you drive it you leave your partner and yourself at a disadvantage because you have almost no time to get to the line. Yes, driving works sometimes, but most of the time these guys drive it out, into the net, or get blocked. On the rare occasion they do score, they suddenly feel vindicated that drives are the only way to win lol.

Awesome. Thanks for your comment. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks like I do. You nailed it. A lot of third shot drivers are accustomed to playing against other third shot drivers. When they go up against players who have the ability to drop the third shot, the drivers become frustrated because the are expecting a drive.

I think 3rd shot drives are a nice change up in the right circumstance. The hardest players to compete against are those who can do both and know when to do them. Me personally, I probably lean on my 3rd shot drop a little too much. But if you have to err one way or another I agree that’s the way.

Great commentary on an interesting match! I, too, thought that more experienced players would not allow them so many attempts at the drop. I might even have caught on to the multiple possibilities of put aways, but at my level, you never know. Thanks

Very nice! Great commentary and analysis. Thanks for taking the time to point out errors but also making suggestions / options if one is just not feeling it! Keep up the great work!
