- DID I WASTE MY MONEY ON THIS CAMPER RENOVATION?
I recently bought an RV that needs a ton of work. But, am I in over my head? Did I end up profiting on this project, or is it a flop?

Not a waste of money. Projects with dad are worth every penny and minute.
I love this. That’s so true. 🥺
So so so true 🥺
Totally agree
1st: Very nice decision 💯✨
2nd: Thanks for sharing even tho it may not feel like a typical "diy project" but still we all can learn from it
3rd: It’s nice you took to reflect and see its not worth your time efforts and money
4th: Absolutely not a defeat cause you didn’t loose money and still a very nice video 🔥
You’re the best - thank you! 💓
Totally not a fail. The work needed is a BIG DANG DEAL when water damage is involved. REALLY EXPENSIVE work & much harder to do on an RV.
Thissss. Thank you!
Im looking forward to seeing more of your work with your dad. You guys make a fun team!
Yesss! Trying to convince him to help me this weekend. 🤣
Your Dad deserves a BIG steak for Father's Day !! :)
I actually just told him yesterday I owe him a steak dinner. 🤣
Anytime you can have a learning experience and recover the material costs its a win in my books.
Same! 🙌
The Minimal Mom has renovated several RVs and also has found some more work than worth it. Would be worth you to look at.
Hey Sam!!!! I've been looking at Rv's for the last 5 years. I'm finally narrowing down the class and model l want. This is going to be a fun series.
We’re gonna figure this out together! 🙌
Are you looking at new or used? And what are you looking at?
We’re doing same and, wow, so much work. Our subfloor floor was so rotten we had to bust it up down to the insulation. Horrible. (Previous owner slapped some flooring over top as a bandaid.) we got scammed for sure. Live and learn.
We are to the rebuilding stage and it’s looking great. Won’t do it again though.
Water damage in an rv usually means big $ repairs.
Roof leaks and wall delamination are very hard and costly to fix.
Yepp… that’s what we learned, and that’s ultimately why we walked away.
@@diyhuntress you’re a wise Woman 👍🏼
Im surprised you didn't get a box truck or an old bus and diy the whole thing. RVs and campers are notorious for being poor quality and leaky .
I think I was blinded by the fact that I was actually able to afford this one. 🤣 I’m definitely actively doing research for a future project though. A skoolie would be so cool!
@diyhuntress just look into if it can be easily re registered as an RV in NY . A bus is expensive to insure. But i believe you can get good deals on old buses there isn't much use for them. Box trucks and buses are great cause they are standard truck and are easily fixed and worked on.
A colab with @regretlyss and @diyhuntress
As someone who lives in an RV full time and also has a camper van, if you're only using it for a few days at a time go with a camper van. It's much easier to find parking in a van and they're way easier to maneuver/comfortable to drive. They're a little cozy and may not have all the amenities of an RV but I'd still prefer it if I was moving all the time.
Thank you for the advice! Definitely looking into a van! 🙌
Hello friend and Joe. Not a fail at all. I'm looking forward to the next idea. OneLove ❣️
Thank you!
I've been building RV's for a living for 18 yrs. I can talk you through just about everything you'd need to know. And the little I don't know, I have an entire factory of people that do that'd be happy to answer any questions.
You’re amazing! 🙌
Where are you located? [EDIT] if you actually have a factory I’m guessing Indiana as your location.
The good thing is: You try your's best and not give up easly, when a idea don't work's is frutating yeah..but gives a lot of experience in the future.
Folks I see this a lot, especially in the Airstream arena. Do your research first, know what it will take to finish a massive project like this. Folks demo and then go "Oh Crap, what have I done." Do this kind of stuff in steps. Address the major issues first with minimal demo. Make those repairs and keep all the interior/parts. That way if you burn out all the stuff that some folks might want/need are still usable and available. Make sure you put together a layout plan that you can demo as you go and plan each small bite of the project. I remodeled my Airstream, walk thru video on my channel, and I did a few big items first and then started on small things that only took a weekend to complete. I even floored the front half of the unit and went back a year later and started the rear half of the make over and finished the floor. Just recently I made butcher block counter tops and got that off the list. So those were 4 yrs into the project all the while we have been using the Airstream for camping. This type of reno style keeps you fresh and the unit is usable which feeds your desire to finish and you don't experience burnout. Just wanted to through that out there. In this case this unit was usable. Clean it up, address the leaks use the unit for what you intended and work on this project as you go! Sam not saying this is your fault but this is typical for RV remodels.
Soo not a fail when you make some dough! Looking forward to seeing what you decide on! 😊. Happy Fathers Day to Dad Joe!🎉
Thank you!
Great purchase. certainly not a waste od money.
Was definitely an experience!
While I am disappointed, really was ready for the series, I understand the need to rethink the project. Will wait patiently for the "traveling hotel room" 2.0.
A blow up Grinch AND you made $225?! It’s a win win for me. 😁👍
RIGHT!? 🤣
Good call to not continue, Sam. Andy Rawls did an extensive rebuild of an Airstream and it took what seemed like forever. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Bill
Thanks, Bill! Definitely a huge project. It’s hard to walk away, but I think we made the right call. 💓
I love this- it crazy we started almost the same thing at the same time for the same price! The adorable coachmen dog logo makes all the issues worth it 😂😂
The difference is I bought a camper trailer, which is easier to work with
Good choice not to continue on this project, it would cost a small fortune to get it in good condition. I have been working on campers and caravans as a mechanic before, and my opinion is that there are never a question if there are going to be leaks, it is more when will it start to leak. In my opinion I would invest in a van that has a regular steel chassis, there will be a lot fewer places to start to leak from :) Good luck on your next project! :) P.S: I'm Norwegian, so the grammar and spelling here might have flaws..
Thank you for making me feel better about walking away! I’m definitely looking for my next adventure now that this chapter has been closed. 😉
@@diyhuntress Looking forward to see the next project, and future videos here on YT :) I really like your channel a lot.
I can TOTALLY see Sam in an Airstream, with perhaps an add on "porch" for the bikes ?!
Sorry this didn't work out for you...But glad to know you & your dad recognize your limitations...I find it amusing that this is the third RV reno that has come up on the few channels I subscribe to...almost as if the YT universe has shifted toward RVs...lol.
Ahaha - I totally get it though! I’m so excited to find something a bit newer and travel with it!
Best way to drive for those who love to travel.. Enjoy it ❤❤❤
I’m so excited about the potential of traveling in a house on wheels in the future!
So glad you came to that conclusion before you went any further. Hi Dad, good to see you again.
Sameee. He says hi!
Oooh, my dream is to own an RV one day. Congrats!
Sameee.
I vote van
And then I vote bribing you to come help me with it. 🙌
Love ❤️ your Formula 1 shirt. Yes better things are waiting for you guys down the road !!
Omg I’m so excited for you this is going to be epic. The best part is working with dad.
This is very exciting!!! With your skills too your RV will be GORGEOUSNESS!!! Oops! Need to watch the whole video first LOL. BUT, I am excited for any RV/ camper makeover.
Yes sometimes it is better to walk away from a project
Hey Sam, when I saw the water damage underneath the couch I though 'yup this is not good'. Having owned three owns that had basement leaks, I am really, really familiar with the NIGHTMARE of dealing with water damage. I was hoping it wasn't bad but - guess it was.
Either way, always enjoy a Sam Saturday! Cheers!
Sameee. The after damage scared us for sure. Thanks for the love!
Good decision to bail on this one. Gotta have a weather-tight shell, then everything inside of that can be played with. Once moisture has gotten in, as you said, that's a lot of pulling apart and inspecting for possible damage. Bringing something up to a blank slate, when you were planning on starting from one, can be discouraging. But still, no time with Dad is a waste!
Yes to all of this! 🙌
I appreciate you sharing this "fail." Not at all a fail.
I am so excited for you!!!!! It’s going to look so good! I would love to do something like this, but like you said, a little scary!
I can’t wait for the perfect rig to turn up! I’m so excited about the potential of a home on wheels!
We've owned 4 campers from popups to travel trailers to class c driving motorhomes. 3 of which have had roof leaks that we fixed on our own. It's not as bad as you think it is. Judging from the leak location in your camper really wouldn't be that horrible to fix. More than likely that's a single sheet rolled roof. So you would just remove the old one rolll a new one on, seal it well at the seams, replace the mutton boards which are directly by the seam and more than likely the one below it due to water damage. Then replace the insulation slap up a new sheet of Luan paint or wallpaper of your choice and you're done. It's actually easier then renoing a room that has water damage. I wish we were in your area and I saw that fb post. We have a tow-behind travel trailer now and our two youngest kids have finally moved out so we want to go back to a class c since it'll just be him and I. That style is exactly what my gimpy but would need because I can't do the newer ones since all the beds are over the driving cab instead of having an actual bedroom at floor level. Hopefully if you pick up another one and you find you have water issues you'll give it a try before taking it to an "expert" because it will save you thousands and it's easier than you think.
Ahhh - I wish I had the time, money, and resources to put into all of the work! This was a lesson in my own limitations and what to look for in the future. Can’t wait to find the right one. 💓
I appreciate your experience but I would also counter that sometimes it is a VERY big deal to repair water damage. We had to complete rip out the entire floor lamination in the front 8 feet of our trailer, above and below the framing. I had to completely remove the bed and cabinetry and rebuild it all, this also meant removing the water heater and water tank (the source of the long un-noticed leak). It was a ton of work and working in such a small space and trying to maintain low weight as you rebuild can be quite taxing. So for me, at least, my experience was kind of the opposite…and I know I have some more damage in the rear near the bathroom looming over my head. 😬
"Lithium Iron" batteries? You're so cute.
🤷♀️🤣
Sorry that RV didn't work out for you, but I'm sure you'll find something better! (At least you didn't lose $$)
Yesss. Can’t wait until I find the right one!
"Not completely don't recommend." Ha! Excellent summation. Love this honest content and SUPER excited to see what you eventually land on!
Ahaha - always try to keep it real!
Awesome idea! I would absolutely love to have an rv. The fact you're renovating is so so cool! I'm in PA, so right next door to you! If you ever want to venture down for a quiet vacay, hit me up and i can set you up with some awesome camping places that are better known by locals!
Good call!!
Thank you!
ABSOLUTELY look into getting another road hotel. There's things to keep in mind for the next one though.
- Where are you going to park overnight while you're out on the road? Going to cost you more or less?
- Gas to GET to the places you want to go to. If you've just been using a small car, an RV is going to be MUCH more costly in gas.
- Driving an RV is much much more different than driving even the largest of pickup trucks. MUCH more mass, MUCH more wind pressures.
For the good stuffs;
- Bringing the rest of the family with you is golden.
- Going to the grocery store to buy food and cooking them yourself is going to be MUCH more cheaper than finding then going to restaurants.
- Too much sun? Sit in the Hotel. Chill, relax, and not have to worry about being too far away.
- Leave a day or two early to wherever you're going and check the sites out on the way.
For ME, not a good purchase...
- My vacations are 100% STAYcations. I love being at home.
- Although I absolutely LOVE driving, I don't want to be away from home. I don't "panic" from being away, I don't feel "uncomfortable" from being away from home, but I just LOVE being home.
- I've got absolutely no place to store even a van sized mobile hotel. And even if I could, a family of 4 just wouldn't fit in it comfortably.
Yes to all of this!
I smell a skoolie build coming
So cool. This is my dream!
Yoooooo Sam!!! I don't care if you & PA Dukes burn that RV to da ground. As long as he's in some of the videos!! Tell him I said Happy Father's Day!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Thank youuuu! You’re the best!
would you like to get some nice outdoor smart landscape lights? APP controll RGBW color
IMHO it really depends on its current state and how much was the asking price? also how much work/time/$$ needed but this isn't that bad if you have a budget in mind and a layout to your liking i guess haha
Dang looks pretty clean on the outside!!
The outside was so deceiving!
I can feel this is going to be an epic project 🎉
Ughhh. I wish it turned out way better… we’ll get ‘em next time. 😉
Smart move!
Whoa - $3000.00, you should be ashamed, you stoled it - ha ha ha. Sorry it didn't work out for this particular one. You'll find one, it will be a fun project to watch. It sure does make sense to have an RV for your travels, vs renting rooms, less packing, less eating out, Win win!
🤣 Can’t wait to find that keeper!
Oh yeah differently not a fail its knowing your limits and when somthing is a lose. Good job on thinking smart 👍
Thank you!
Yaaaassssss! I want one!!!!😊❤
Woooaaahhhhhh !!! Congratulations Sam 😅
Ohhh it’s gone
It gave you experience, an owner tag for 3 months, plus 225 USD
I would say…. it’s great !!
Congratulations again Sam 😂
Hahaha. I’d call this a win! 🤣
Watch Eamon and bec they redid 2 vans , kinging it,and also endless adventure all redid vans/ Rv … I want to do a sprinter van 😜 ohh I almost forgot ladi and Margaret 😊 good channels to watch ohhh and van wives lol there I’m done !
Ohh - I have to check them out! 🙌
Dude, you forgot to add the contour tool in your profit!
Where you able to run your refrigerator with the power house?
We actually didn’t try it out, but I’m curious to try and see how long it lasts!
@@diyhuntress we found out last time we lost power that some of the new refrigerators purposely will not work with generators because it’s an “unsafe” circuit. We thought our refrigerator had fried from the storm and ran out to buy a new one only to have that one not work either! Old fridge became basement fridge which I don’t regret but we went without power for almost a week so we lost a lot of things. Our chest freezers will run off a generator luckily
Well you did the crappy part for someone , but the next adventure will be fun
Sam, these builds are neither easy nor cheap.
You guys could have done this but they take time, usually more time that you figure on putting into the build. Basically, you are building a tiny house on wheels.
Just keep in mind that renovating an RV or converting a truck or bus to an RV, is as extensive a build if not more so, as renovating a house.
I spotted the water damage in the front loft as soon as you pointed the camera at it because I had watched some videos from Deb's RV services.
From my perspective, the shell is not that big of a deal. You can always rip it off the chassis and replace it with a shell made from blue foam panels that are fiber glassed over to provide the rigidity and strength you need.

You're welcome.
Actually I am disapointed :D ofc you have to do whats best for you and sometimes you have to make choice about investing your time. Hope someone else will actually save this boy.
Horse trade, they do a job for and you do a job for them.
Can your dad be my dad too please ☺
"minor water leak" = RUN
EXACTLY our thoughts.
so glad you (and your pops) were able to know when to fold 'em AND made out with a few extra bucks!
Are you evan done with the garage why start a different project 🤔
I’m waiting for BIG tools. 😉
