Reading the comments on here shows how ignorant people can be.
Labour aren’t able to rejoin the EU, certainly not in the first term. Make Brexit work will involve forming closer ties with the EU so that GB can prosper again. The people need to be shown the benefits of working with the EU.

0:28 Where is it all going ?
Not just the disastrous cost of Brexit, removal of European Citizenship and Freedom of Movement for UK Citizens and lowering of environmental and food standards..
It is also to pay billions to contracts for cronies? Truss’s disastrous mini budget, offshore tax avoidance of the super rich and the cost of brexit and Britain failing trade and economy.
Labour’s manifesto needs to bite the bullet, make the best of brexit and get rid of the rotten apples - and I am not referring to food.

Three quarters of labour voters are pro remain, two thirds of the country, and 87% of young voters are now against Brexit. So what will it take for labour to have the proverbials to put forward policies that can guarantee my vote, as an ultra-remainer? Turning down the EU commission proposal on enhanced reciprocal mobility of youths is appalling. There comes a point where a line is crossed. They can’t take my vote for granted. If the manifesto has NOTHING to explicitly improve our relationship with the EU, it’s curtains for me. Yes the first past the post is what it is, but so is my conscience

Sadly Labour can't say anything just yet, the media would have a field day, they need to start highlighting the failures of it and place the blame squarely at the tory parties feet for its vanity project (and money grabbing project).

I mean , it worked soooooo. Blame the game not the player. Got millions of people to vote against their imdiat and long term economic interest by going "ra ra , cheap shoes, less immigrants", and they got more expensive shoes and more immigrants , and it will work again for a lot of people. Former investment bankers will say to people that heir kids are the elites and they are the men of the people and go "ra ra , cheap shoes, ra ra no more immigrants ". Although to be fair this time around if they do just get their Singapore Dream going, they would have destroyed the labour market so thoroughly that it will actually reverse immigration as people will go wherever they can to escape the cost. Bar of course the servants for the elites , they'll be the best in the world. Selling your country to the wolves does bring great profits.

Of course, the instant Labour brings Brexit into the debate, they are handing the Tories and their client press a ton of ammunition to throw at them. It's understandable that they have to be cautious about this. It's also fairly certain that being able to rejoin even the single market is a long way off and, to begin with, the only accessible policy is likely to be compromise and damage limitation. "Making Brexit work" doesn't mean that it will work better than EU membership, but simply that they will seek ways to make it do as little damage as possible.

I think thee and me are hoping they are trying to appease Labour Leavers so that they will vote Labour again and get Labour elected. Make Brexit Work is just a way to say "Look the Tories have screwed it up, vote for us and we'll sort it out". What is really needed is repeated explanations to the public about why everything is expensive and getting more so. They need to be honest and upfront while asking the questions "Why did the Tories do this?", "Did they really decide they'd had enough of experts and could just wing it?". Then set out what needs to be done to ameliorate the damage. The closer you align with EU to reduce red-tape and make our trade frictionless again, the more people will want us to have a say in the rule making. (Notwithstanding it hasnt happened in Norway).
None of this will happen until after Labour get to power - and then we will see where they are really going to go.

Brexit cannot be reversed. There is no way for the UK to rejoin. It wouldn't favor the EU if we were to do that. Why would we readmit a member that just left? Especially one as contrary as the UK. You always wanted more, now that you are out, things are going better. Why would the EU shoot itself in the foot by taking the UK back? It takes only one veto to stop an EU application.
Making brexit work is your only remedy, going back to the EU is not a realistic option for this century.

I have German friends and they send me German newspaper articles about Brexit. The problem is that we are not the only countries trying to join the EU. There is a queue. It would mean accepting the Euro and getting rid of the pound.
I don't think Labour has given up on joining but if you tell the electorate that they will probably have to wait 10 years or so and put that in a manifesto then Labour would lose voters to the many right wing parties.
I would rather see Labour in power with a large majority than with a small one.

  • @PeloquinDavid
    @PeloquinDavid Před měsícem +1

    Am I missing something?
Why are Labour focussing on blaming the Tories and not playing up Brexit?
Might the imminent general election have something to with it - i.e. where electors are being asked to choose between political PARTIES?
If there were a realistic opportunity to ACTUALLY rejoin the EU in the next Parliament, it would definitely make sense for the Labour platform to seek an explicit mandate to do so, but since there's no point to GUARANTEEING a failure to fulfill such a promise in the next Parliament by seeking a mandate for doing anything more than to set the stage for an eventual return - e.g. through greater policy harmonsation and electoral reform.
Realistically, until Britain shows it has made it impossible for the nutters (on the Left as well as the Right) to hijack the country back into some future self-harming ideological flight of fancy, its ability to rejoin (in the face of Continental scepticism) will be seriously circumscribed.
