Thank You For 22.4K , Love Y'all ♡
It does not lack precision, it’s power chords being finger picked on a Les Paul to get a crunchy muddy sound, Knopfler is famous for one of the most intricate clear RIF’s and solos in history ‘Sultans of Swing’ which he played clean on a strat - finger picking. He’s amazing.
Mark knopfler, the lead singer was in a department store in the electronics department, and they had a wall of TVs tuned to MTV. And he saw some of the stock workers standing around, watching a music video, and talking about how the people in the music videos had it so easy. So he put what they were saying into this song. And the other guy you hear singing in this is none other then Sting, the lead singer of The Police.
I did not know this so than you for this info.
It’s what he does best. Same with sultans of swing. Takes everyday life and turns it into great music
Remember, this was back when MTV actually played videos 24 hours a day. Us kids, teens and even young parents were glued to it
The winning video of the year at the MTV awards..How could it not be..They gave the Network free advertising!! LP was the same-year Grammy Winner. A huge comeback for the band after thier last 2 LP's had'nt sold well and many critics had written them off...Dire straits showed they were nowhere near finished. Glad u liked this one.."Try 6 blade knife" off thier debut LP.
Grammy from MTV?
This song was a super hit on MTV….fun fact “Sting” from the Police sang backup on this song ❤️🙏🏻💯🔥
The guitar intro of this song...hard to find words for it!!
Doesn't lack precision but actually is precise for their music.
I believe it was the first video animated like this too. It was a first in lots of ways.
Thanks for yet another great reaction Mia. This was a massive hit for Dire Straits back in the '80's, especially here in the UK. Not many people realise it's Sting with the backing vocals too. Straits had so many wonderful tracks back then, and Mark Knopfler is a genius guitarist/singer/songwriter/performer/storyteller... 🙋♂ ❤
When MTV first hit the scene in the very early 80's and cable was fairly new to America, not all cable companies around the country presented MTV because many were still in their development stages, so there was a big commercial campaign on other cable channels where various artists would come on and say, "Call your cable company and tell them, 'I want my MTV!" That's where the line in the song, "I want my MTV' came into play. There were videos where no talent so-called artists would have their videos presented. In this song, the band makes fun of them by saying, "Money for nothing and your chicks for free." The laborers in the computer animation are annoyed that they work hard for their money while various no talent bands are making tons of money and getting chicks. Sting does backup vocals in this song.
That guitar riff gets burned into your brain, once you hear it it never leaves you.
I remember when this song/video came out. It was definitely different back in the day.
Love your reaction!!! Awesome as always!!! ❤❤❤
The background singer was Sting of the supergroup the police. He is in Mark Knopfler. Both blended well on this song.
Thank you for playing the “whole” song!
I’m surprised that she found the whole video. Most of the whole versions have been scrubbed from existence.
I feel like this was in a classic 80s movie! I like it. Great reaction Mia!❤
Dire Straits were a band not a person. The lead is Mark Knopfler. On the song the "I want my MTV" lyrics is by String.
Mark Knopfler was going for a ZZ Top guitar sound when he wrote this song since they were very popular on MTV at the time
I graduated from high school in 1983. Growing up and into our high school years, we listed to music on vinyl LP's, 8-track tapes, cassette tapes, or on the radio. Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms" is the first CD I ever owned and listened to. It seemed so amazing at the time to hear the crystal clear guitar riff on "Money For Nothing" without any of the hiss in the background like we were used to with the LP, 8-track, cassette tape formats.
Knopfler did say the "F" (faggot) word a couple of times.
What’s done today will be laughed at in 40 years. History doesn’t change
Another awesome reaction BabyGirl. This song brings back memories. Me and Jeff Wheeler slacking off at our Summer job listening this while pretending to work. Love ya girl and thanks!!!
Omg, you're killin me. I'm 40, and YES, this WAS advanced graphics for the time.
I'm prehistoric 😢
Dire Straights Walk Of Life
Once again another phenomenal reaction hands down no questions ask you are the heavy weight champion of the reaction world yourethe best keep doing what you're doing Mia THE WORLD IS YOURS
Mia I cannot get enough of you. You are beautiful and wonderful in every way.
As a white English male, I am honoured that you seem to love the music of my people.
We've come a long way in the animation dept. 😂This was 'cutting edge' computer animation back in 1985... it looks cruddy now, but fans like me back then were going, 'Wow!'
The original track was over 8 minutes long 😲They had to edit it to make it a single - they even made a version where they edited out the section where he used the word "fa+++t" 😂 Sting (vocalist/ bassist of The Police... solo artist now) sang on the track as a guest singer.
The 1985 album 'Brothers in arms' by Dire Straits sold 9x platinum and became the band's biggest hit... but Mark Knopfler (vocals & guitars) was not happy when his band was thrust into superstardom... He released 1 more Dire Straits album in 1991 ('On every street') and disbanded Dire Straits after apparently difficult tour and a live album 'On the night'... (Knopfler got divorced a 2nd time and fell out w/ other band members as a result)
Mark Knopfler launched a solo career in 1996 and seemed happier playing smaller venues and releasing solo albums.
Great reaction Mia! I used to own the album this song was off ..." Brothers In Arms " Album...Maybe I still do but don't know where it is Lol . The band has a lot of beautiful and emotional songs..." Tunnel Of Love'' Is one of them!
Mia, see if you can find the live version of this performed by four legends, Mark knopfler, Sting, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins.
I remember when this came out on MTV we all thought how innovative it was. Thanks for NOT stopping 50 times during the video
Good reaction Mia!👍🙂
Mark Knopfler's riff is an absolute classic and it's not about lacking precision. Mark has deliberately created that sound. He has full control over what he does. It's a combination of his way of playing the guitar plus a lot of added distortion. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists out there. In other songs from
Dire Straits Mark's guitar sound super "clean".
Incidentally, what would rock be without distorted guitars.😁
You should do a Comparison to this vs. Weird Al Yankovic's "Beverly Hillbillies"!
I would suggest watching A-HA with the song Take On Me. It has incredible effects in it.
This song is good too..one of the better ones lately, a good reaction video and song :)
That’s Sting, btw.
I love this song.
You should listen to Mark Knopfler's "Piper To The End" and "True Love Will Never Fade"
Great band so many Great songs👍👍
Great job with your reaction to Money For Nothing from Dire straits the next song from them sound be Tunnel Of Love & Sultans of swing or Brothers In Arms. great rock music
Views coming for this one!
Do Walk of Life!!! Best video and song
The album brought the CD a breakthrough over vinyl. Because of this song I bought new speakers for the car.
30+ years thinking it's "We got the movies" (ie they work at Wal Mart) and it's actually "We've got to move these"! Mia's intense face made me listen harder.
That’s Sting from the Police on that intro and background. 💕
Hi Ms. Mia., Great Video.. I think this is the first video with computer generated characters..
The guy that jumps off of the stage with the Green guitar, that guitar is upside down.. ♠W.G.
This is when MTV was great, no commercials, no reality TV shows, and no other boring stuff, just Music as the way it's supposed to be...
That is Sting of The Police saying I want my MTV
Thank you for doing this! I really forgot how the video was. It was a big thing when MTV first came out, it was played almost on the hour. Thanks Mia! love ya.
Mark Knopfler the lead singer is one of my favorite guitarists of all time🎸🎼
Mark Knopfler is one of the 10 greatest guitar players of all time.
That's Sting singing background vocals on this song.
2:44 Mia, You see what he's saying right?
Most of us work our A..es off to make ends meet. He's telling us theres a easier way...
The animation is us.
You didn't get the uncensored version where he sibgs Bout the little f****t. Lol.
Sting from The Police sang background vocals..
Mia i told you the video was cool.glad you liked it.
A big FYI, *_ALL OF THE BANDS THAT ARE NAMED IN THE VIDEO (EXCEPT FOR DIRE STRAITS) ARE FICTICIOUS........ SO, NOBODY'S FEELINGS WERE HURT, NOR DID THEY REALLY DISRESPECT ANY OTHER BANDS IN THE VIDEO_* Kind of goes back to the old tv saying, "Names were changed to protect the innocent."
This is Huge Hit for Dire Straits back in 1984 I believe
Love your reaction & agree with you about Dire Straits. However the song/video you played is the sanitized & shortened for radio version. The actual song is twice as long. It's different with a lot more guitar & is on an album called "Brothers in Arms" which is another album song, not to be missed.
Damn, Mia
👍👍👍👍👍
Saw your Elvis video. You should check out Pastor Bob Joyce on CZcams. Listen to when he sings. Notice guitar. Enjoy.
Mark Knopfler was a guitar god
Love this band. Always sounds great. Though watching this video ! The creative team behind the video may have went into the future in a DeLorean n seen Roblox.
The guitar riff lacks precision? Maybe but then it's meant this way. It is a characteristic of rock to always be minimal NEXT to perfection and NOT to play precisely. That's part of the appeal of concerts. Mark Knopfler is certainly one of the best hit guitarists out there and would probably be able to play "precisely" - if he wanted to.🙂
Very constructive point!
Rotoscoping
umm....In waht what way does the intro 'lack precision'?!?
The guitar doesn't sound overly complicated or too dramatic , although it is extremely difficult to play I'm sure! after talking to Mia on one of her lives, I think this is what she was getting at . I love the sound of the guitar on here!
That wasn’t “revolutionary “. It was made that way on purpose. Made to be goofy!
Stling is singing in the background 😉
I hate MTV don't do music videos no more just have all this reality stuff on now
