Samurai unit in his history originaly was an archer unit. They rarely fought with open duel with his katana. And more often naginata (the spear), even also the fact that "Ashigaru" or the peasant who is realy fighting in the frontline *yeah typical warlord.
In coclusion being a samurai you must excel at many weaponship so bow or sword theres no exception
