It's amazing to see the growth of your skills and tool collection over the years from making simple garden furniture to this step then the bespoke pieces of art you make today. It's good to go back and watch these older video s to remind ourselves how far you've come.
Well designed project and the video presentation was as good as or better than TV quality! If I had three thumbs, they'd all go up!
Great video Jay, fantastic project!!
Average Guy Woodworking Thanks!
First of all, that display case is breathtaking. As a kid, I’d spend weekends with my grandfather in Mandeville who was a retired engineer from Shell in New Orleans, LA. He built a 34 foot catch in his driveway in the 60’s. Years later, he built a 40 foot house boat in his driveway also. Both were docked at Pontchatrain Yacht Club when I was growing up, then later in Mandeville. I wasn’t born until ‘78. But, he taught me to sail, catch trout, and play tennis. He never taught me to build anything, however.
It wasn’t until last year that I realized how much carpentry I could have learned. The basics I got from my father in my teens. But, I basically quit golf last year to take on woodworking projects.
I’ve built my outdoor kitchen, my workbench, Bahama blinds/shutters for my house (which is completely cedar), an authentic replica Masters Driving Range trash can, my daughters’ Discovery Backyard play house/swing set, a board on board fence around the back of our property, and am now currently researching plans for a 12 gun display case.
The visual examples of you using your router, making pocket screws, the table saw to make crown molding, and utilizing a French cleat, for example, were educational demonstrations that can help us all who are just learning, or teaching ourselves, to do carpentry. We appreciate your production and subsequent post of this video. Out of curiosity, who taught you to respect wood?
Thanks Jay,
Great project Jay, your work and videos keep getting better as you go along, keep up the great work!
Very cool cabinet... I am in the process of setting up my own shop... You have a nice way of explaining things in an easy and entertaining way... Thank you for sharing!
Loved it, great work there... Clean simple and elegant. I will Definitely Use this plan. Thanx for sharing man.
Awesome Jay, nicely done.
This keeps on getting better and better .
I really enjoyed this video Jay. I need to build a cabinet for my daughter to keep her Precious Moments figurines. With a mod or two, this just might be perfect.
Cool project. The amber shellac really brings out the beauty of the pine.
I really enjoy going back to your older videos. you have a knack for combining woodworking with great video work. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you.
I'm in Michigan.. are you from here or just a fan of our teams?
Just watching this video 6 1/2 years later. Wow, you have really come up in the world! Still the same guy, though! Kudos!
Excellent video and project. Please keep sharing your videos!!!
Jay, Your videos are never boring ! The display case came out awesome !
Thank you Sam.
As usual, a great video-I appreciate the subdued background music. You have great skill.
Jay. Nice job, as usual. Like the idea of staining before assembly, works great for raised panel door.
I think it paid off with this one. This is the first project I have ever stained before assembly.........I think.
As always, great project, Jay. Thanks for posting this.
You're very welcome Jake. Thank you for watching :)
Nice job Jay, love your videos!
Very nice sir. Very nice indeed. Now I just need to make about five of these for my basement bar. Thank you for the videos.
good video jay keep up the pro work!!!! greetings from Switzerland
This is a wonderful project jay! I was asked to build a similar case for a top blues player that had passed away over a year ago in fargo nd and built it out of quarter sawn white oak and used cherry inlay for the strings also used ebony for the chord buttons on the neck. The case has his guitar and shoes in it and is hanging in a top bar downtown! Everything was donated for this project and it was very rewarding! Now I have a mile long list to build these!! Keep up the good work jay!!!
Very cool man. That's awesome to hear. I bet it makes you feel good seeing it in town.
Awesome video and craftsmanship.
Great job. Thanks for the great video and instructions.
Great job fella, Quality work & Quality filming.
Regards Baz.(England).
Really nice! love your style of furniture you make!
Thank you Cosmas. I have to come up with something. Not all of us are as smart as you tool engineers!
Very nice project Jay! - BTW like the new logo.
Yet another great easy to understand video Jay. Music was excellent as well. Keep them coming, Dave
Thanks for the feedback Dave. I appreciate it.
That's bad ass Jay! Looks great.
Great job. I enjoy your work
Great job Jay.
Nice man! I learned a lot! Keep it up!
You're video editing really allows for a nice construction and instruction flow during the whole process while maintaining a good time on the video. Unfortunately I do not have a dado capability but I definitely can learn some techniques here.
I have to agree with you regarding the stain. Beautiful work.
great project! I love the idea of the dado for the transition between felt and wood, it gives really clean edge! I cant imagine how great it would be with some LED lights inside the top to give to the guitar the highlight it deserve!
Ooooh. LED's!! That would look great.
love it, awesome job.
Great project as you always make ...thanks ....keep it up
You do such AWESOME work--thanks for sharing
Tim Davey Thank you Tim. I appreciate the kind words.
great work as usual Jay ...inspirational stuff
Thanks Steve. I appreciate it.
Absolutely awesome Jay
Thank you Craig.
It would be awesome to see a revisit to this maybe with a hidden compartment for humidification. These project panels do not seem to be available anymore. Awesome cabinet, I've been working on this in my head and you had about the same plan going. I was going to use plywood on sides and face frame the front. Thanks and great job!
Another winner Jay. Great vid.
Thank you Donnie.
Really awesome, Jay!
Thank you!
Really great job
Great project Jay, thanks!
You're very welcome. Thank you!
omgg im so glad i ran into this i hav a signed solid body ive been dying to display but im no means close to being able to do it 😭no time and no skills but i wont give up
Great job jay!
Thank you Nathan. I appreciate it!
Nice project. Enjoyed watching.
Thank you
that was amazing!
Nice cabinet!
great job. I hope I would probably need to add a little width for my double neck Gibson electric guitar. Awesome. thanks
I know what I am making my mom for Christmas next year. Thanks for this Jay. Wonder if you could come up with a pretty cool guitar stand...hmm
Wow I know a lot of reptile keepers that would like this video or even offer to buy some from you haha
Awesome thanks for the information!
And would you look at that, an instant sub from me! Great work!
Very nice project. Now I'll have to get a guitar so I can build the cabinet LOL
Thanks for the video Jay,
Roland
Thanks Roland. I appreciate it.
Love it!!
coooooooool
Add a couple LED lights at top and bottom of the inside of the case and it would really pop
really nice thanks for sharing
I see what you mean about it being your best video edit. I love this video man it is top notch!!!
Thanks *****. I appreciate it.
Definitely your best video edit yet. Great job Jay.
Thank you Russell Roefer
Beautiful.
Did you say,"Having a cutlass really makes this project go quick."? I thought I was the only woodworker that uses a cutlass for woodworking! :) The Pirate Woodworker.
hahaha. No telling what I actually said. I'm a horrible speaker. But I try to get better :)
@@JayBates ... NAH! You're fine! It's my hearing from being around woodworking machines for years. You said "cut list" and my brain heard "cutlass"...made me laugh when I thought, "I bet a cutlass WOULD make things go more interestingly."
What a great project :)
Thank you!
Improvements for the video? Nope, can't think of any, that was really well done! Nice job, enjoyed it.
Hi Jay, you did a great job with the cabinet. That's something I wouldn't ever be capable of doing (and my wife knows that too). The video is great. The WB is perfect and the colors look quite pro. I don't know the whole camera settings but don't forget to set the shutter at 1/60 (1080p) or 1/120 (720p) if you film in NTSC. The other thing I would recommend is to keep wearing the same clothes. I know that after so many hours of hard work they won't smell like roses, but it will give a better feeling of continuity and I would also recomend wearing a tshirt with your logo, company's name, motto or slogan. Great jobs (building, filming and editing!!)
Thanks for the feedback. I kept it at 1/60 and 30fps with this one. I'm running MagicLantern on a canon 600d with the crappy stock 18-55 kit lens. The lens has a not so hood aperture And my shop has crappy natural light. I'm still working with tweaking ISO values in magic lantern for less noise. Check out my most recent video. I think the picture was the most consistent there. Yeah wearing the same clothes would be better but as pressed for time as I am I just get in the shop and start going.
Oh, can't really afford logo shirts at the moment.
you got some serious skill!
Thank you. Much appreciated :)
WELL DONE
What is to dislike about this video? smh.... great project and nicely done Jay!
Thanks Jay
great work jay how did you secure the glass/plexiglass am building my own model display cabinet for my model cars
jay bates first off love watching your videos. There very inspiring to the average wood worker. secondly as your advise would you use 3M #77 spray adhesive to glue the felt to wood. Im lining a blanket chest and came across this video in which you used some type of spray adhesive. 3m the right stuff for this? thank you for your advise
That will work.
Good job on the cabinet. Do you think I could make wood trimmed 1/4” acrylic doors that were 30” wide and 76” long. I would really like just one door rather than two 15” wide doors as it makes the content more visible. I could add a horizontal wood strip that would add rigidity to the 30” wide door.
What do you think?
Great stuff -- just subbed.
Cool. Thanks!
Can you build directors chair video tutorial please I'm also watching all your vids keep up the good works I'm from Philippines God bless man!
I can dig it! Great job on the cabinet AND the video (altho I'd have used an acoustic guitar soundtrack). And for your logo t-shirt, you already have the design so just print it onto some t-shirt transfer media and iron onto a blank t-shirt of your own choosing. Keep sharing your woodworking skills with us, eh? AWRIGHTY!
That would look awesome with a few LED's in the back corners...(they are cheap) and it would up the price considerably. Another Great project man. Killer Job.
Awesome design for a cabinet man! Vid quality looks great I wouldn't change a thing !
Random question I'm not a pro T staining. So I never know what type to get and the process of doing it. And how to clean and store my brushes I always end up with a fluffed up brush that you might as well throw away any tips or maybe a vid on Somme tips for finishing quick how to? Thanks love the channel ! Maybe one day I'll get the courage to start up a channel! lol I'm dying to start my own channel !!!
Great vid keep uploading !!!!
Great cabinet. 😊 What kind of plastic glass do you use? Kind regards André
love the t-shirt! I drive by Bates Burgers every day.
I might just have to build one for my Ukulele ;)
Nice work!
Thank you. You could probably fit two in there! A scaled down version would look sweet though.
I have been looking for tutorials on how to replace the glass in a cabinet, or in my case my grandfather clock. What did you use to secure the glass into place? Thank you!
Jay...what technique did you use to transfer your logo onto the back of your cabinet? Looked like you got the toner paper wet before the heat gun?
Dang Jay, Your projects just keep getting cooler and cooler. I really like this one. That cabinet would make and awesome display case for other things as well, just add a few shelves.
How did you do the brand/logo transfer onto the wood?
John Heisz did a video showing how:
Label Your Projects
tanks you gime a boost to new idea for my ps4 console!!
I liked that your mentioned how many hours it took.
Nice cabinet. Wish I had your talent
You do. You just don't know it.
hey what u use to cut the half laps?
hey Jay, I saw you did your part. So I just did mine. Ha Ha I had a good time and will visit your site. looking forward you your next one.
Ha! You keep watching and I'll keep making :)
THANKS! My guitar is going to look great in that!
Nice. Build it and let me see!!
Jay Bates Your looking at it! I believe my father asked you to make it for me. HA!
So cool. I hope u enjoy it!
i like it .. i like it!
hi pro, what are you doing with glass in 05:02
How are you holding the plexiglass in?
Really nice! My only thought would be to add some padding to the piece that holds the neck at the head stock. You're likely to ding up the finish on the neck over time otherwise. Good work on the editing too. Short and to the point.
Hello Jay. My name is Jorge and I'm one of your new subscribers. I really like your channel because I get new ideas and learn new tricks on the carpintery field . I wanted to ask you what brand is your table saw or what kind of table saw would you recomened for home owner. Im planning to remodel my kitchen and build new wall cabinets for the restrooms. Thanks
The table saw I have is a G0690 cabinet saw. You can get by with much less though. I don't make tool recommendations though. I cant spend your money for you.
Not only a great wood project, but an outstanding video production as well. Typical Jay Bates quality. But tell us about the Bates Hamburgers t-shirt!
It's a place in south east Michigan near my dad. Just happen to have the same name. Great food.
Jay Bates Not just A place THE place for burgers!!! Great cabinet too!!
Wow, is that whole house a workshop, do you live there or somewhere else? I wish I could have a workshop in my living room instead of on my balcony. But my wife and kids would hate that. I've never seen a fully functional Workshop like that in a living room and in the kitchen. A former tenant in the next apartment did have a table saw in their apartment though. What does the rest of the house look like? Have you done a tour of this house? I guess I'll just have to glance at all your other videos. Where you live, do you share your living space with other people?
é top parabéns
Hi I would like to buy a Display case from you if you sell them I need it for my diecast cars if possible let me know if that can be arranged
Hey Jay, awesome job man. I just subscribed to your channel. What's that killer tune you've got playing in the background?
Thanks man. I appreciate it! The killer tune is "Room with a view" by Jahzzar. The link to it is at the bottom of the video description. Thanks again for watching!
Secondo me il fai da te video è Spettacolare
beautiful job. could use led lights.
