Founders Doom - Blind Taste Test

- The Founders Brewing Company is one of the highest-rated breweries in the world. Their limited-release Imperial IPA that was aged in oak bourbon barrels was very hard for us to track down. However, after a city-wide manhunt, we landed two bottles that cost us $14.99 each. Would this beer be worth the effort and cost? The blind taste test is always a great way to find out!

Partial Transcript: "On tap -- Doom
Hi. I'm James Knott and today we are drinking a limited release beer that has a lot of buzz -- Doom from the Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
A special thanks to BBA founder Scott Blickhan who drove all over Columbus, Ohio trying to track this beer down for us. He is a fanatic folks.
Doom is actually their Double Trouble Imperial India Pale Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels for four months. It is 10 percent ABV and has a suggested retail price of $12.99 for a 750 ml bottle. Our bottles actually cost $14.99 and the stores in Columbus were sold out in a matter of hours. It's a hard one to find.
It was originally known as "Hand of Doom" when it was released in their tap room. The 2013 limited release batch is the 6th iteration of the beer and was released on April 22nd. We are tasting it one week later on April 29th.
Let the blind taste test begin."
i miss this show as well...james was a great host
Nice review. Love the show
It is a hop grenade. The hat is from The Brewing Network, they do internet radio about home and craft brewing. My shirt is also beer related, my wife's design!
Interesting what you said about the bourbon canceling the hops. I made an IPA and aged some of it on bourbon barrel chips. When we had the beers side by side, you could not tell they were the same beer. You guys got it just right. Both good beers, but very different.
I think its a cool hat too!
im gonna miss this show. :((
Had this on-tap at WEOB in Frankenmuth a couple months ago.
Not bad. Glad it only cost me a $1 to try.
We will miss you too!
It's true. We have six more episodes taped.
I scored a bottle of this and was very excited to try it. Unfortunately, it really wasn't for me. I felt like the beer was just way too sweet and syrupy tasting. I would much rather have old fashioned double trouble.
Every single blind tasting... I'll give it a seven....
What!? The show is going away!?
The aging definitely dulls the hops. I liked it, but it wouldn't be worth the price for me to get it again.
Nevermind that last question just watched black crown and saw your comment.
Was wondering when you guys were gonna post this. Good review as usual guys! I was kinda disappointed with this beer when I reviewed it recently. Seemed like the bourbon barrel-aging kinda defeated the hops to a certain extent and it was a tad hot on the alcohol front. The price is also a detractor in my opinion. Not a bad beer, but not amazing either.
As far as my #1 Founders beer......definitely KBS. Although Backwoods Bastard is also excellent and the 2010 Nemesis I had was amazing.
On tap: DOOOOOOOOOOM
It was fun to try, but I definitely wouldn't buy it on a regular basis.
Ryan, is that a hop grenade on your hat?
Fucking awesome, where'd you score that gem?
Definitely not. Pliny is delicious, top-shelf beer!
I wish I could have tried it for $1! :)
Why are you guys stopping the show anyways? Getting bored with it? As a rookie i think its awesome. And im glad i can watch the old vids. Best of luck though!
