My favorite is the bronze bull, a person would be placed inside a metal bull that would have a fire under it turning it into an oven essentially, eventually the person would cook but as he cooked eventually the heat and pressure would come out of the bull making it sound like an angry bull.

There is one thing i like to add, Blutaar or "blood eagle" is a viking ritual. Its descriped in detail in various places but no sources are found that verify the actual use on someone, as afar as i know. It should have been used on traitors. So what is it? The person would been either lay flat on the ground or kneeling. Then the back would be cut open, rips broken or cut from the spine, bent outside, shoulder blades turned outside and lungs hung over rips and blades as far as possible; leaving the person with bloody wings. Even if performed this would cause death through bloodloss or overwhelming pain rather quickly, the thing is, the lungs would still pulsate for a bit. But like i said there is no validated source of use its just a described method. If used on people it might top the list in this video for me.

One that doesn't get mentioned much is quashing. Your wrists are attached to ropes or chains and heavy weights are attached to your ankles. You are then hoisted up and dropped so that you stop short of hitting the ground. The shock causes all of your joints to tear and dislocate, all the way down the body. It is like a fast and dirty version of the rack.
With flaying someone, there was a special thin and flexible knife often used called a flensing knife that was able to get under the skin and sever the connections. Sometimes salt water was injected under the skin to loosen it, as well.
When I was in middle school, back in the 80's, we were directed to do a historical report on any subject we wanted. I chose to do an in depth report on the torture techniques used by the Spanish Inquisition. I think I mentally damaged my teacher, and I was excused from having to read mine aloud.

Scaphism, also known as the boats, is an alleged ancient Persian method of execution mentioned by Plutarch in his Life of Artaxerxes. It ostensibly entailed trapping the victim between two boats, feeding and covering them with milk and honey, and allowing them to fester and be devoured by insects and other vermin over time.
I once heard of a variation where the victim is chained inside a bathtub of milk and honey out in the open. the deification that accumulates in the bath infects the rat bites very fast.
I think this was never confirmed to be real, and I am fairly certain the bath version isn't, but the image haunted me, so I thought I'd spread it to you. you are welcome.

  • @Zenkirune
    @Zenkirune Před rokem +4

Apparently Lingchi wasn't too popular with a great deal of people like the note mentioned, but some accounts also say that many executioners weren't fond of it either. While you had some true monsters who took excessive pride in getting as close or even over 1000 cuts as possible, a lot of executioners would bleed the victim enough to make it convincing and then "accidentally" hit an artery, giving them a (relatively) quick death out of what was supposed to be very, very drawn out, and then finish cutting them post-mortem.
This being the ancient world though, this was usually done after accepting a hefty bribe from the condemned's family because the executioners saw a good chance to make a quick buck out of human suffering.

Here in the UK, we used to put highwaymen up in these small cages on top of poles, at major crossroads. The cage was only big enough to crouch in and the inside was covered with spikes. And the crows would be watching, waiting for you to die, so if you lay down, they would start pecking at you.

The saw-method got me the most, but recall having seen the mouse-in-a-cage-on-belly one in a movie or so many years ago. Forgotten which, though. These punishments makes the less- to none-macabre Pillory feel like blessing in comparison. Being stuck in one place while the crowd threw rotten tomatoes etc. at you might not be considered as a real punishment, but bet all accused ones would prefer it instead.

The folk that became executioners and headsmen are more sympathetic when you realize that it wasn't exactly a job that you'd sign up for. It was a government-mandated position you couldn't really refuse, and lopping off heads and torture day in and day out - even if reluctant - doesn't earn you a lot of friends. Butchers were often roped in to take up the role, and even convicts were offered the job as an alternative to having their own head on the chopping block. And if your father happened to be an executioner? You can bet your bottom dollar you'd be roped in to becoming one as well.

Scaphism, the brazen bull, the blood eagle, crucifixion, impalement, bamboo torture, burning at the stake - this video barely scratched the surface of historical human cruelty. • @laneminor6240

This video forgos the Brazen Bull, which was a large metal contraption that people were stuck into and then roasted alive in. Their pleas and agony would transmit through the sculpture, and echo as if it were the sound of a raging bull. When the guy who created this Perilaus, climbed inside to demonstrate the acoustics to the commissioner, a Sicilian King, he was locked inside and tortured to death. It's debated whether or not this torture really existed or was all propaganda, but it is disturbing nevertheless.
It also forgets 'bogging' where a person would be taken into a bog, chained to a tree, covered in honey, and left to fester as food for insects over the course of several days. Many people died from thirst or starvation (if it rained) rather than from the torture itself.

Sawing could last days. They would saw you in half until you passed out. At that point they would pack the wound with salt to help prevent extensive blood loss and to actually help "heal" the wound. When you came back around, the sawing would begin again and the cycle repeated. Sawing could go as far up as the chest cavity before you died. Let that sink in.

there are some staggering torture concepts. The Anguish Pear a small ord that splits to force an orface to expand beyond its limits. while used on the mouth, it was used in...well, where the sun doesnt shine (some claim it was a punishment for homosexuality, but i havent seen solid evidence myself.
the Blood Eagle: a torture method by the vikings. They tie the person up then cut right at their shoulder blades before reaching their hands in and forcing space (and commonly breaking the bone). this causes organs, such as the lungs, to be drawn out through thw back, greating the "blood wings".
Another cruel onw, whoms name escapes me, is a method used on accused traitors that rip out their eyes, tongue, and stab their ears. Usually, they dont intend the person to sie, and isntead throw them into nature whole they are blind, deaf and dumb, making survival impossible.
i believe this was just called "the press", but i may be mistaken. You would be strapped down to a table and then a wooden slab would be put on top of your body. they add weights to the slab, slowly adding more over time, as it slowly crushes your body.
Lastly, and possibly most simple: stoning! Getting stoned meant something entirely different before how we use it now. They would dig a hole and bury the person up to their shoulders or would use shakles so you cant get out. then they would have passerbyers grab stones and throw them at you. the Agonizing oart is that they can kind of set the pace. a quick death requires a solid blow, and every blow befors is just additional, slow pain. Reportedly, many stonings ended because one persin couldnt watch the agony anymore and would get a large stone to do a killing blow on them to end the agony.
    In short:Humans are fucked up.

Worst punish is pillory whip or breaking wheel the cruel punish in Poland

  • @crimsonknight7011
    @crimsonknight7011 Před rokem

They left out Honeypot, Brazen Bull, and Impalement.
Impalement was famous from Vlad the Impaler and basically they would have a huge wooden pole shoved into an orifice and then the pole would be stood straight up so the person was a good 10 feet or more off the ground and slowly slide down the pole. This punishment could take days to die.
The Brazen Bull essentially was a bronze statue in the shape and size of a bull. It was hollow inside and a person would be put in it. A fire would be lit underneath and due to it being bronze the heat would distribute evenly. There was also some pipes inside and the screams of attempt to get air thru the pipes would make the sound of a bull.
The story goes that a king ordered for this to be created and after the architect made it the king asked him how a person is suppose to go in it or what they would look like inside. The architect climbed in to show him and the king immediately closed the side and locked him in, then lit a fire underneath making him it’s first victim. There were stories that the king would do this to people during banquets and had the bulls snorting sound as entertainment. After the king was killed it is said that they threw the bull into the sea/ocean.
The Honeypot, I’m going off memory here so I might mistake some aspects. Basically a person was put essentially on a boat and partially inside a barrel so they couldn’t move. They were set up either in the woods or a swamp like area. They were given milk and honey to eat and drink which would cause diarrhea and such. Due to the smell and feces insects and bugs would come and start to eat the person for days and days.

In the book "Storia della Colonna Infame" by Alessandro Manzoni (author of the book "The Betroted", in italian "I Promessi Sposi"), the author specifies that in the rack the torturers didn't use ropes to stretch their victims... they used wrapped planckets filled with glass shards and broken pottery... so... yeah... it was even worse.
And let's not forget the Brazen Bull: in ancient Greece, sometimes, criminals were forced into the statue of a bull made out of bronze, paraded during banquets and then a fire would be lit under the belly of the bull... it is said that the scream of pain of the prisoner as they were basically cooked alive would echoes within the bull and rsemble the mooing of the animal, entertaining the guests of the banquet.
Some historian think that the Brazen Bull never actually existed any it was more of an instrument of propaganda, but I think it is still worth mentioning.

I couldn’t stop watching your reaction on your faces to the torture. I study history of weapons and torture and torture devices. I also do medieval reenactment and larp. I reenact the executioner and I am quite knowledgeable about medieval history. I can safely say that people back then were much more brutal than today. And also take into consideration that the education system and belief system and society as a whole was much different plus a lot based around either religious beliefs or royal figures and rulers who were in power who were afraid of being killed. Again people back then had less knowledge about the facts of that superstitious are not real and many people believed superstitions and that was another reason why so many people were tortured unfortunately.

There is a even more gruesome way that was developed by Vikings long before England became fully United. The blood angel was done to a person out of pure spite. It involved a sword wound down the the center of the back and the lungs of the person would be ripped from the body from behind then splayed out like bloody angel wings. The victim unfortunately died as soon as the lungs got touched but it was a display of pure hate and a show of barbaric nature that the Vikings did as a warning. Ivar the boneless did it to an English land king out of pure hate as the king humiliated Ivar years prior in battle. Ivar had the last laugh as he seized the town and defeated the king. The king was taken to the nearby mountain and crucified the king on top of the blood eagle as an absolute show of destruction also sending a very clear message of don’t mess with me.

Iron Shoes (likely not the real name) is when you were convicted of a crime so they made iron shoes and heated them up until they started turning bright from the heat and they would forcefully put those shoes on your feet. Naturally you'd be flopping around from the pain but would die from it as well. Some old fairy tale stories like Snow White have it in there and it was told how the evil queen looked like she was dancing with those on

Also their body is covered in honey. All that attract lots of insects, which start eating and infesting the body. Worms and larvaes are quickly born inside flesh and start eating it too. In the end prisoner dies, covered in vermins and his own shit, rotting alive. Oh, also that construction is left on the sun to speed up the rotting and attract more insects:)

As a gamer and atheist, I've sawed all the people in half that I ever wanted. That amount just happens to be 0 as I don't particularly want to saw anyone in half.
I think people that complain about games "corrupting" people, or people having to have religion as a "moral barrier" or they'd be monsters otherwise just sais more about those people than about anything they complain about.
Personally, the most disturbing thing I've ever seen must be lathe accidents. Kinda get squiezy just thinking about it
Don't think this is the type of thing I actively want more of in my life though.

Allegdegly the Vikings had a especially gruesome method of flayling called "The Eagle". And then there were things like this one in ancient times (From the college humor series WTF 101, which shows the weirdest - and obviously craziest in this case - Stuff in nature and human history. Seeing as the topics can be explicit its mayybe not something for everyone but its actually a good show if you ever wanna give it a pickup): czcams.com/video/2IDQZXRM3WI/video.html
