    Creating a good short story has to the most difficult task for any writer. Bravo to those who succeed! I would love to know the name of the Author for "Photo Finish"? What a marvelous story! This was also well read. I stressed over Derek's race to get to Nick? Then relieved at Nick's discovery of the figure? Then once again shocked at the very ending! A Rollercoaster ride of emotions hit me so fast at the end making this a real gem. Only a top notch author can do this.
    I really liked Bill Oddie's voice too.

    I'm an American from Philadelphia who now lives in the South and understood all those bloody British actors. This is pretty modern speech, as opposed to something like the Edwardian and Victorian British speech, like Wooster & Jeeves.

    Perhaps it's because of the strong accents of the readers in stories #3 and #8, but I'm having trouble understanding the endings.
    #3: So the husband finds the wife unconscious upon the grass, after she dug a bit of the turf to begin her flower bed? And the Spirit of the former owner harmed or killed her? Was that the "big reveal?" Just that the spirit was keeping the 2 new owners from harming "his" yard?
    #8: I didn't understand the ending at all. The Husband needed to steal his wife's coat so that he could sell it? Or why did the husband need the coat for the weekend? I didn't understand.
    They both paid Carter, but why did the husband need the coat?

    • @Prof.Tarfeather
      @Prof.Tarfeather Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, That's what I got from the story too. You aren't the only one who has trouble with some English dialect. It depends on their accent? What part of England they're from?

      @satellitestargazer2770 Před 5 lety +3

      The story is about a man named Mallow who sent a letter to Jim Baxfield, our protagonist, to confess to a murder and explain why he did it. Basically Mallow had a sister who was an actress. She fell under the attack of a very harsh theatre critic named Jeffrey Marsh. Marsh absolutely loved getting negative attention from actors and directors for basically being the reason their careers were on the line. In other words, Marsh was a huge self-centered jerk who wrote "poison pen letters" (which is basically hate mail) to actors and directors. As a result of these insults that ruined her reputation and self-confidence, the sister ended up committing suicide. Mallow blamed Marsh for his sister's death and began to send him threatening letters whose words were cut out and pasted from Marsh's own reviews.
      When Marsh turned up dead no one cared and everyone actually rejoiced. As it turns out, Mellow was the one that killed him but the crime went unsolved. How did he do it? Well, after sending Marsh threats, Mallow pretended to be a huge fan and sent him a letter with his (Marsh's) picture and asked him to sign it and send it back. From what I understand, the envelope was coated with a poison (where you lick it?) which would gradually kill Marsh. But since the letter with the signed picture was sent back to Mallow using the same envelope, the evidence was not found with Marsh's corpse (by then it has been sent back to Mallow). Thus, the police couldn't make an arrest. So he got away with it for years, until now.
