That release on the F sharp on "mie" is to die for. What beautiful well controlled and rich tones he had there. Beautiful top and low.

Gigantic baritone, stands on his own land, most under appreciated voice. Bravo!!

Why do commenters insist on calling their favorite singers "underappreciated". There was a baritone somewhere with a truly great voice whom you have never heard of because he walked in front of a bus just before his debut. That poor schmuck was underappreciated not MacNeil.
MacNeil was the president of the opera singers union. He sang at the Met. He had many LPs and videos. He was as well known and regarded as it is possible to be. I heard him live several times in some of his best roles. MacNeil for many opera fans was the "model' Verdi baritone. What nonsense people write.
I knew a black baritone who was underappreciated. I can't recall his name. He never got anywhere. But he had a hell of an instrument. I knew several tenors like that too.

@@Agorante You are correct. But it is on relative base, and on today's level, other singers, especially italians are much more celebrated either on CZcams or other channels. Cornell MacNeil is the best cast of Movie La Travita, the best Germont。

@@Agorante It is extra harder for people of color in any business, let alone the art and performance... you are nailing the real underappreciated group... I am sure there are ton of them who deserve much more. I always respect those devoting their life into singing, it is a no easy thing, but probably it is even harder for a ballet dancer of color...

I Loved The BIG MAC and although he is revered by great opera lovers, he in my humble opinion was under appreciated, MacNeil had great musical integrity and was not singer who wanted to be a media star. I never heard anyone that could touch his talent, interpretation, great emotion, clear huge voice. Although I saw him at the end of his career he is my favorite! Huge voice.

@@PBXVIILY Big Mac not only sounds huge gigantic and low dark real baritone tone, but his sharp read into character, the artistry, maybe not as loud fancy as others, but I enjoy big time. He brought characters out and touched the soul of character.
I enjoy Ettore Bastianini's bass like tone, but MacNeil really filled such a gap of shorting of baritone after the sudden death of Warren and Bastianini...
Maybe it is due to his personality and or people's tendency toward those flush marketing type of singers, such as "3 tenors"... he got recognized but I agree it is not enough, or under appreciated so much especially but new listeners. Domingo is the king of baritone! What a shame.

I listened to him in Aida 1986 at Verona, in his sixties. Still wonderful

There are many who dare to call themselves Basses, yet they don't even sound half as deep as this Baritone.

I heard him at the Old Met. He sang one season and had a huge success with the audience. I loved him.

I prefer Ettore Bastianini on this aria, especially the ending.
