When Oswald's mother was alive, he was in full control of himself and controlled Gotham for a while, but when he lost her he went blind with rage and almost got himself killed. Ed was less murderous when he and Miss Kringle were a thing (probably because he knew she wouldn't approve which wouldn't be a problem with Oswald), but all of his first murders happened because he wanted to protect her and as soon as he lost her again he pretty much went crazy. I don't think they slow each other down but accelerate each other. They killed together already and without Ed's friendship in season 2 Oswald might not have gotten his ambition and murderous-ness back (sorry for the long comment, I get what you mean though)
I'm sorry to intrude on your conversation, but I think as well as your point of love being their weakness or not, Oswald's mum and Miss Kringle were considered weakness to love because they could be hurt very easily. They weren't criminals, they were innocents. They weren't truly aware of who it was they were loving. In comparison, Oswald and Ed know exactly what the other is capable of, they can both take care of themselves and they're in the same world now despite their very different backgrounds. Surely that means that if they do love each other, they won't be burdened by the other, only strengthened. :)

It's annoying how Robin is denying what is actually in the script because he thinks Oswald is not a good lgbt representation. Yes, Oswald is a villain. He fell in love with Lily at a very vulnerable time. He was surely a very damaged person. He used to hurt people who were close to Lily e.g. he dropped a stick on Petunia's head and he openly supported a group of guys who believed killing and torturing muggles is a good thing. He didn't really take her feelings into account. He didn't realize he was ready to sacrifice something for her 'till it was too late. It's annoying how Robin is denying what is actually in the script because he thinks Oswald is not a good lgbt representation. Yes, Oswald is a villain. Yes, he is cruel, he does not take Ed's feelings into account for a while (but then he actually does). But let's speak about... Severus Snape. Yeah. He fell in love with Lily at a very vulnerable time. He was surely a very damaged person. He used to hurt people who were close to Lily e.g. he dropped a stick on Petunia's head and he openly supported a group of guys who believed killing and torturing muggles is a good thing. He didn't really take her feelings into account. He didn't realize he was ready to sacrifice something for her 'till it was too late. But... do we talk about him being "confused" or "not understanding his feelings"? No, because he is a guy (a damaged guy) who fell in love with a girl. So PLEASE let's not talk about Ozzie "confusing gratitude for love", let a villain be gay, let any tv character be gay and fall in love, because representation is not about making only good healthy people gay to show that being gay is good, it is about showing gay love is as normal and random as straight love.
