    At around 300 to go you should have pushed up with that small hole that formed because everyone behind you ended up passing you and forcing you to pass them in the end. That’s why that big wall formed up in the end

      It's not even about that. Assuming similar levels of energy left, had he done that, he'd have slowed down much sooner and they'd have caught up and passed all the same. Name of the game is energy expenditure and how you use it, hence why these races are tactical. Some people are strong finishers, while others can maintain a even pace throughout. Know your type and strategize. I have never seen him out-sprint the final 150 in any of his races. He seems to be the type that can keep his pacing even till the end so he needs to use positioning from the start and not stay so far back as he won't be able to sprint up in holes that form throughout.

    Nice job spence. You’re form is amazing as usual and I know you dont like backseat coaching, but recently after an injury I realized I needed to change some things, so that I could compete and began to run more relaxed which greatly helped by endurance during workouts and ease of speed transitioning. I started to move fast instead of trying to force my body. And I know you’ve been running for so long but maybe this could help you too. Just keeping the upper body relaxed and focusing on speed of transition and form in the lower body instead of force.

      That's great advice for anyone !! Thanks Hensley !! Yea, what I find so amazing with Spencer, is his form is so incredibly smooth. If you watch Spencer "on tape" and put an imaginary horizontal line on the top of his head, his head pretty much has virtually ZERO up and down movement - he's using his energy to propel forward much more that most people. I used to know a runner who actually was a little better than average, not a champion, but not at the back of the pack either. But this guy had HORRIBLE head bopping. If he could have figured out how to get rid of that severe head bob, he could have chopped lots of time off in his races. But he was one of these guys who didn't really care what his time or place was. But he did beat many people in races despite the severe head bopping.

    I'm curious about your assessment of your pop in the later stages of these races. While this year's weight training has helped you improve your overall strength, to my unqualified eyes, it seems like you're not getting much out of your body when you try to go to your kick. I think back to your 7:58 3k last February and you were passing dudes in the final lap. You looked bouncier (in a good way). But that's just an outsider view. How does it feel? And do you think a frank appraisal of this year's training approach is warranted yet? (Please don't think this is a hater comment. It's not. I have enjoyed your content for years. I'm one of your first 10 patrons. I ask these questions with love and a sincere desire to see you achieve your goals.)

    • @Kevin-nk6lj
      @Kevin-nk6lj Před rokem +2

      I've ran and watched a lot of 800s in my life and while I'm no expert. And there are definitely some people who can find a kick. Most of the time it's just willing yourself to hold your pace. The problem is is the 800 is basically a slightly slower 400 twice. it doesn't leave anything left in the tank. If you have a ton you probably should have been running faster during the rest of the race. The 3k is a much slower race and less anaerobically demanding and aren't always run all out, but are sometimes paced, allowing for more power towards the end. You may already know all this, I don't know your background.

    • @mustardseedsociety
      @mustardseedsociety Před rokem

      I think Spencer's weight training will eventually pay off. It's not like he's doing weight training at the expense of his long runs and we all know he's doing speedwork. And it's also not like Spencer is doing Ryan Hall style weight training. I think Spencer is right on track {no pun intended} and you watch, he is going to have a breakout season and blow through his current PR's.

    • @dcnole
      @dcnole Před rokem +1

      @@mustardseedsociety I hope that's right! I didn't intend to imply that the weight-training was bad. Genuinely just asking questions because I am FAR from an expert on any of this.

    • @mustardseedsociety
      @mustardseedsociety Před rokem

      @@dcnole It depends on what kind of weight training we're talking about. I'll never forget I was a spectator once at a College Cross Country Race in Dallas. It was a 5 mile race and this course was extremely difficult. All the runners {who were ALL pretty good runners} were getting beat up just by the difficulty of the course. Well - all except ONE guy. The ONE guy who led from start to finish skampered up the hills like it was no big deal. Being a loop course, I got to see this guy close up several times and this was the strongest looking distance runner I have ever seen. It was absolutely obvious this guy weight trained. There's no way one could have that muscle definition without weight training. In this particular 5 mile race, he was basically on "cruise control" and dusted the entire field in 26 minutes. The 2nd place guy was WAY behind and he finished in 27 minutes and of course the next 100 guys finished in the next 4 minutes. I think the last guy finished in 31 minutes. But remember, this course was extremely difficult. But it was the WEIGHT TRAINED guy who blew away the entire field.

  • @randylazer2894
    @randylazer2894 Před rokem +1

    I think you did very well, particularly for just having run your first competitive 800's in a long time. Regarding your mention of "haters", despite having run 1:51 and 1:52, I wonder if the idiots who criticized those really good efforts, could break 4 minutes for the 800, or if they would need to ride a bike to cover that distance!
    Also, people fail to recognize that races are not time trials, and you put forth the best strategy that you can to win or finish as high as possible. With you being around 1:50 for the half, as you continue to build strength and endurance, you are on track for a sub 14, 5k.
    Regarding the hair.....trust Allie! A long time ago I dated a woman who had me to change my hairstyle, and she was right about that. Unfortunately, that was about the only thing she got right! Also, any woman that will drive for 3 hours for more, to watch you run for less than 2 minutes.....Good Lord she's a keeper!

    • @randylazer2894
      @randylazer2894 Před rokem

      @John Cena First...I would suggest your remarks would be trusted by more people if you actually used your real name. Otherwise we can only assume you can bench press 500 pounds, and are worth many millions of dollars, but a runner....maybe not so much.
      Secondly.....at least per Spencer's video a few weeks back, Spencer had not done an 800 meter race in over 2 years. So with that being the case starting off with a 1:52 and a 1:51 is quite acceptbale.
      Then, if one is running a 1:50, 800, yeah, they are on track for breaking 14 minutes in the 5k.
      So actually nothing I stated was wrong, although I would say that maybe you are one of the few so called "haters" who actually runs with some very good speed and goes long.
      Where I think we are in agreement is that per my comment, Spencer needed to continue to build strength and endurance, which is I think what you are referencing.
      There is a difference of the training for building strength and endurance for a marathon, as opposed to a 5k.
      Building strength as you are well aware often comes from high intensity interval training, for which lactate thresholds are seemingly cutting edge, while the traditional basic hill repeats, and running at altitude for the production of red blood cells is standard, or if one is really into it.....just fly to Eldoret, Kenya, and hang with the Kenyans for a few months.
      So Spencer was really mixing it up, doing 200's, 400's, and 600's, as opposed to just banging out 5:30 miles, for an hour.
      His 1:52 was on a wet track vs. 1:51 on a sunny day not much of an improvement, but again, tactics take a preference. He needed to have more of a kick the last 150 meters, and to get that, he needs both longer and stronger training.
      If he hits 1:50 in the coming weeks, and does the training to build his strength and endurance, yeah, he'll break 14.
      Obviously you aren't a hater, nor were you a person I was referencing thinking that so many who criticize runners, well, they only run to the refrigerator.

    I think driving four hours to a race and then competing costs you a bit. Try some other pre race routine. Definitely some progress. Agree that focusing on the 800 is a good idea for time being but would think PR'ing at least is the seasons goal. To be really fast at 1500 with your attributes would think you'd need to be shooting for 147.5, but you really aren't doing enough speed or speed endurance to hit that so I guess Pr'ing off what you are doing with the lactate stuff is probably a realistic win.

      Then I didn't really argue with "John Cena", but rather corrected his misstatements pertaining to Spencer's racing, and effectively supported what he said, that Spencer won't build speed by running 5:30 mile pace.
