The H-4 Spruce Goose wasn’t actually built in that dome. She was built in Hughes facilities in Culver City in 1942, just north of the LAX area. Her one and only ‘flight’ was nearby in the Long Beach Harbor in Nov of 1947. The dome wasn’t constructed until 1983 and the aircraft was displayed in the dome until she moved to the Evergreen Museum in 1992.
ah yes you're right! I forgot that detail. Thanks.
The Aero Club of Southern California took stewardship of the H-4 when the climate-controlled hangar lease it was stored in from 1947 to 1983 was up. The dome was built to house and display the goose. Then after Disney acquired the property they wanted to do something else with it and the H-4 was disassembled and barged up to Portland then move via train to McMinnville. It sat in parts in a plastic tent four years while they built the museum building to house it.
I freaking love these videos! So cool that you’re sharing aviation with the younger generation (which is me)! I literally just came home from soloing for the first time today and saw this in my feed. Awesome content.
thanks so much!!! And congrats on the solo- that's HUGE and a day youll never forget. :)
Congrats on your first solo!
Agreed this channel is one of my favorites not only part off why I started flying, but definitely why I made A channel
What an amazing day for y’all! I really wish I hadn’t sat that one out … then again, if I had been there, no Zero-G’s 😣
Loved watching all of those smiles. And really love the reminder to appreciate this amazing place where we live!
Your flying and video productions skills are ON-POINT. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I really appreciate it. :)
i’ve watched way too many aviation videos on youtube. the editing on this is insane. this might be my favorite one tbh. great job to everybody involved
Hey thank you so much!! I really appreciate the encouragement.
I did my private pilot training out of VNY last year, so very familiar with this airspace. Bringing back some fond memories
G, day from Sydney Australia.
Fantastic video production with great sectional chart airspace explanation and views of nice assets from the cockpit.
Chilling was the hanger dome of the H4 "Hercules" Hughes plane.
🌏🇭🇲
Thank you very much! Yeah the Hercules is on my list to visit up in OR.
Love the animations and explanations of what's happening.
I would call this a master class in navigating SoCal for sightseeing!
Fantastic video! So much great information given! I just got my PPL out of VNY and been wanting to do this sight seeing flight for a while, I definitely learned a few things, thank you and you just got a new subscriber!
Such a great video, Eric. I loved the narration as well as flight details as a reference for future use. Really special stuff. Thanks.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the specific feedback.
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey it's a perfect mix of scenic escapism and how to guide haha
This is such an awesome video! Great narration & editing! Great job as always!
Thanks Krish! And thanks for your support making this stuff possible!
Great content, as always ! LOVE it !
Thanks!!
I really enjoyed watching this video! I love your content and the new map animations are super helpful!
Glad you liked it. The graphics are time consuming so it’s good to know they are being enjoyed!
What an awesome day to fly VFR over LA.
It was very clear compared to some low viz hazy days.
Another great one always enjoy watching.
Thank you!
Loved it!
Thank you for annotating places (post processing.) Beautiful LA day!!!
Glad you enjoyed it the graphics. I appreciate the feedback!
Love this!
So quick backstory, I dreamt of being a captain of a 747 since I was about 8, I got into flight school literally months before 9/11 and pulled out due to the uncertainty of the airline industry at that time which financially was the right choice. I'm in my mid 40's and make enough to get back into training and subscribe to your channel because of your family/flight connection, its special and honestly I'm envious and hope to be able to do similar family trips down the road.
My oldest is your daughters age and because I'm in law enforcement ive been able to do fun and silly things for her over the years to mess with her friends or drive like an F1 driver to get a yell or laugh within reasonable safety because of my training and ability as a driver.
I have to admit I had a HUGE smile when you were showing her friend from UND, same college I was in actually, about the complex radio traffic and demand of flying in that insane airspace and the low gravity maneuvers... seeing the smiles on their faces and your calm and cool proud papa face was really enjoyable and genuine and know that your daughter will forever remember that and you were the "COOL" dad in that moment and she ate that up. Well done sir!
Thanks so much. I appreciate you sharing that and so glad you connected with those moments. It’s definitely been so fun to share the privilege and perks of aviation with my family and makes it that much more enjoyable.
You are one of the first channels I tuned into 2 years ago before I got my license. I love your videos, plane, editing, and content!
Thanks so much! And thanks for sticking around. :)
You have to have the best GA videos! Love the narration and visuals you overlay. Also cant get enough content from fellow cherokee 6 owners. Were getting dual G3X's in ours soon!!
Keep up the amazing work 👏
Thanks so much for the encouragement
had fun seeing the Queen, a SpaceX booster, and the USS Iowa, but my transit from TOA to SMO was so weird the tower controller at SMO was in awe. Not a good thing.
Very nice videos. My first 6,000 hours was flown all over Southern California.
Great video...place labels, at comms....thx for an excellent flight.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video
👍☑ Another fantastic video, tks so much!
Thank you too!
Great video. I fly out of the Phoenix area, but am from the Camarillo area and still have family there. This will be very helpful for my next trip up there. I'd love to be able to take a sightseeing flight like this. Also Waypoint cafe is awesome.
Glad it might be helpful for you!
Ehh, I could see my old apartment near the Burbank airport! Lol I’d love to come fly in SoCal sometime if I get the chance
Great vid Eric
Thanks!
Lol my friend called me about doing our commercial 300NM cross country flight into LA like 2hours ago, initial plan was Oregon border but now I see this video randomly as well😂
I’m doing my PPL training at El Monte and all of the CFIs plan instruction flights to Camarillo just for the food. I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into a tri-tip sandwich one day soon. Hope to hear you on frequency!
Just stopping by to say this thumbnail kicked ass, video didn't disappoint either!!
I miss a lot flying in CA. Thanks for the ride
It’s really great flying in California. Glad your enjoyed the video.
Amazing Birds Eye views …. I once flew in a Cessna piloted by an F16 pilot and his pilot buddy in the mid 1980s over the Bay Area taking off from Santa Rosa… the experience is always so special! Funny enough the fourth passenger with us was also a redhead female friend.
Sounds like a fun memory!
Just landed at Whiteman for the first time picking up my buddy for our trip to Vancouver! Uploading the video today! We flew the LA SFRA both going north from SD and back south. Saw some awesome volcanic lightning on the way back south afterword's.
Yeah, SoCal airpsace is pretty crazy, but it makes for a great trial-by-fire learning environment.
2:19: Did someone get evicted from their "hangar home?" Great vid!
First time I flew the mini route, it was terrifying but so satisfying. I learned to fly at KTOA so had alot of the South Bay to look at. Going into LA proper was a whole other world. And that spicy burger at Camarillo is top notch :)
Yeah it’s scary at first but once you do it it’s not too hard. Waypoint cafe at Camarillo is so good!
I do the Coastal Route all the time in the KC-135 out of March. It’s a lot of fun!
Nice! It’s a good route especially when the marine layer is a little higher.
Very well explained for all types of audiences
Thanks!
Fantastic tour, thank you! And I thought Vancouver BC airspace was complicated!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so awesome!!! How did you get custom sounds for autopilot disconnect??
It’s a feature of the audio panel PMA450B. I think the feature is called flightmate. You can record any sound as an alert for a standard trigger signal input. I have a full review of the audio panel on my channel.
Good lord... and I thought the Class C around Toronto was daunting...
Fight on!
My original training was at CNO back in 1992
nice!
KWHP! Did my training there to get PPL
I’m based out of Redlands (REI). I’d like to fly this loop. I’m instrument rated and have experience flying in SoCal. Do you have any Whiteman CFI recommendations? Flying initially with a CFI is a great idea.
Thank you very much! Do we need to take an FAA online course before (like before flying the Hudson SRFA)?
no that is not required but you do need to review the latest version of the procedures and have a terminal chart and SFRA procedure descrpiton in the plane with you.
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey , thank you!
Nice video, and I've done similar flights in my RV, usually with visitors. So, how come the instrument-rated right seater thought that zero G was such a strange thing? Do CFI's not teach or at least demonstrate that anymore?
Waypoint at CMA has excellent tri-tip sandwiches, but unfortunately only on Wed and Sat-Sun. Finally, it's Palos Verdes with an 'S' on the end, but that's quite the minor nitpick. 🙂
I don’t know if they teach it or not. UND is a great program and all the young pilots I know out of there are very good. It was fun to fly with the teenagers. :)
what is the link for the discord?
Are you in bend oregon right now?
I know I asked this question before, but can't find your answer. What kind of mount do you use for your iPad on the right side? I like the fact you can turn it a bit to face the pilot. My Arrow would accommodate a mount like that. Thanks for any info you can provide. And a HUGE thumbs up for your channel!
It’s the MyGoFlight mount with universal cradle. I think it’s called the panel mount or sport or stud mount or something. My video about the audio panel has a good shot of the mount without the iPad in the section where I talk about music inputs.
Thanks I’ll check it out!
thank you for the subtitles. I'm surprised we don't have more air collisions given how inaudible radio commutations are. idk how you understand each other.
You know what you should be hearing, makes it easier to tell what you're getting.
He’s right. Knowing what to expect and the standard format makes it much easier.
Eric, BUR radar ends right before Dodger Stadium. Your best traffic advisory would be SMO, and not SoCal approach. Their radar service is excellent and they will always accommodate the request. I always talk to to them for traffic advisory right after I departed VNY for sightseeing the area especially over Down Town LA. They usually hand me off to BUR for transition to Holyrood Sign or over Universal Studio. All D & C airspace can offer traffic advisory within their vicinity if you can not get a hold of ATC.
Not all D towers can provide traffic advisories as you said…. Not all towers have radars!
@@TomCook1993 that is true. Most of LA class D they do.
@@MooneyM20JSBD doesn’t. POC doesn’t. Pretty sure WHP doesn’t either.
@@TomCook1993 i knew about SBD POC but I thought Whitman they do and it’s not so great.
I’ll give it a try next time. They usually cut me loose when I do the sightseeing in reverse after taking friends to Catalina for lunch. But I’ll ask to stay on with them.
I fly out of KWHP. 🙂
Stop by my hangar anytime!
How do you like your Dynon HDX?
love it. full review: czcams.com/video/Ea4HDOd2z1U/video.html
i was trying to connect to the discord, can i do that without singing up to your Patreon??
If you join at the free level in a few days I’ll be opening it up to that tier as well and you’ll receive email instructions.
You mean Oskosh don't you!
i dont know... I lean more towards SOCal by the numbers... SCT has over 5000 operations a day on average. (over 2 mil per year). Last year (2022) Oshkosh by their own account had 18,684 operations over 11 days... SCT is a much bigger area though so I guess it depends on how you are measuring "busiest".. :)
If looking for new content why not come to Singapore and then record your travels in a brand new Diamond DA40 or 62 with air conditioning covering Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and maybe even Vietnam? I am from OC but have lived here 20 years and can help
SoCal def far from the busiest airspace in the world and def not the busiestt in the states.
See page 10 of FAA’s Traffic by the Numbers. www.faa.gov/air_traffic/by_the_numbers/media/Air_Traffic_by_the_Numbers_2023.pdf
SCT is the busiest terminal control area listed. If you have any facts I’m happy to learn them.
First !
Bragging rights! That’s what they got! 😊@@sirwinstonchurchill2052
This new generation doesn’t know OG Star Wars 🤦♂️
I think maybe he just didn’t hear it clearly the first time because of ATC. My own kids are well versed on everything Star Wars. :)
Is that where you do all the crazy stuff??🫤No we are not doing anything crazy
Thanks for the aerial tour of LA! I did most of this on the ground a few years ago with my family, you brought back fond memories. Great video. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it!
