      @@senateurpalpatine I say this as one of the main advocates for Dooku/Tyranus in most arguments. In terms of skill he was, and while Dooku was more skilled than Anakin, once Anakin fully unlocked his power and turned it on Dooku, even had Dooku been fresh, there was no hope for the Count. Anakin was far stronger in the Force(with the potential to become twice as powerful as Sidious), he was in his physical prime and had a cybernetic arm that quadrupled his striking power for his right arm. Both Kenobi and Skywalker had drastically improved from their previous encounters with Dooku-which the Count admitted himself, that "This pair of Jedi fools had somehow, inexplicably, become entirely dangerous. The duel had descended from farce to deadly serious and was rapidly sliding towards terrifying."
      When fighting Anakin he refers to him as "A destroyer droid with a lightsaber" and that as the duel went on, Dooku was getting weaker and Anakin was just getting stronger.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 Před rokem +1

      @@senateurpalpatine wow there, easy now, you've got a couple things incorrect there, but I do admire your zeal.
      Kenobi wasn't holding back on Mustafar, he was fighting for his life. He held out against Vader because of three things.
      1: Anakin and Obi Wan had sparred, fought and trained together daily for thirteen years. They knew each other's moves as well or better than their own.
      2: Their lightsaber styles and personalities were perfect counters to one another(and perfect complements as well when fighting someone else) with Djem-So being aggressive power attack but Soresu being impenetrable defense.
      3: Vader was still new to the Darkside and was absolutely blinded by anger, arrogance and his emotions. He thought no one could touch him in his new fully unlocked power and so he made errors that cost him the dual.
      Dooku's style and familiarity with the weaknesses of Form III coupled with his greater power to Obi Wan(he was stronger in the Force being only eclipsed by Anakin, Yoda, and Sidious) all of which made Obi Wan particularly vulnerable to Dooku.
      Also in the old Canon(Legends) Anakin and Dooku did in fact encounter one another multiple times outside the films. Once on Kashyyyk, once on Raxus Prime(both times Dooku defeated him), and Anakin dropped most of a room on Dooku in the final year of the Clone Wars with a Force scream. Dooku was more powerful than Anakin in Ep II and far more skilled, but by the end of the Clone Wars in Ep III Dooku is stated to be weaker than he was in Ep II. This is partly due to his age(83 at the time of his death)but also due to his thirteen years of drawing on the Darkside to boost his power, which leads to physical degradation.
      Dooku started the duel on Invisible Hand playing with them, then got caught off guard by how much they'd improved and nearly lost control of the fight, having to resort to desperation and using the droids for a temporary distraction to take Kenobi out of the equation. However, once he started fighting Anakin and Anakin was unconsciously beginning to tap into his emotions he was literally overpowering Dooku to such an extent that the Count couldn't even block, because the blows buckled his wrists and elbows, his own blade was forced back almost into his own shoulder and Dooku had to retreat throughout the fight. What exhausted him wasn't the earlier contest with Kenobi and Skywalker, that had alarmed him and had it continued it would have worn him down, but he ended it quickly enough that he hadn't spent the majority of his strength. What took the toll on the Count was Anakin's "thermonuclear furnace" of Force power.
      Dooku to regain control of the fight had to get inside Anakin's mind and make him focus on restraining his own emotions, which weakened Anakin enough that Dooku regained the upper hand and even felt playful for a bit. Then Palpatine told Anakin to not fight his feelings but embrace them. When that happened(or as the film version has it-when Dooku taunts him to USE his Anger and Fear-and Anakin does) both versions are crystal clear that from that moment, no matter what Dooku did, how skilled he was, how experienced or powerful, he was dead and there was nothing he could do about it.
      I love the Count, he's absolutely my favorite Sith Lord and Sir Christopher Lee did him justice, but Anakin(by the end of the clone wars) has surpassed him in power if not quite skill yet and he was able to overwhelm Dooku when he turned his emotional limitations off. That's pretty much stated verbatim by Lucas, Lee, Stackpole and the guides.

      @@royalistefrancais Sorry, I'm just appreciating the irony of this. I think this is the first time I've ever been accused of downplaying Dooku in my life. Normally the roles are reversed here, so I'm kind of happy the Count has a fanbase as devoted as this.
      That said, Dooku wasn't the best, he was certainly the best practitioner of Makassi, but it's stated by Yoda and Dooku both that during the Clone Wars that he and Mace were equal in skill with a lightsaber. Dooku thinks of Anakin once he sees his true form as 'the best Djem-So practitioner that he'd ever seen in their final dual. Dooku's experience and his over seven decades of refining his dueling when paired with his strategy of only committing to duels he has the advantage in make him one of the deadliest duelists in the history of the Jedi or Sith Orders, but he does have limits aside from his age. He's not as strong in the Force as Yoda, Sidious or Anakin(Late CW), Vaapad can weaponize his Darkside energy against him in a feedback loop and Dooku is extremely arrogant.
      While his arrogance doesn't prevent him from retreating when the situation calls for it, it does make him easier to manipulate by Sidious and for him to underestimate his opponents-as he does with Yoda first and then later, fatally with Anakin.
      Dooku's the fourth most powerful Force user of his era(only outclassed by Anakin/Vader, Yoda and Sidious) and as a pure lightsaber duelist he's tied for first place with Mace Windu in terms of pure technique, Anakin, Sidious and Yoda are close seconds in lightsaber ability, but their overwhelming power in the Force is what allows them to outclass the Count.

    I think, on the whole, they made the right decision. I would have liked to see a little more Grievous, and I think having him kill Shaak Ti is a good addition. A longer duel between Anakin and Dooku would have been cool as well (the bit about Dooku having Anakin's mother killed is just stupid though, glad they cut that). Most of the rest would have hurt the pacing without adding much to the movie. I like the idea of the Obi Wan vs. magnaguards fight, but I'd rather have the fight with them on Utapau and I think having both is redundant.

    • @Chosen_one_501
      @Chosen_one_501 Před rokem +11

      I agree. Now, years after the movie came out, I think a 4 hour version that completely disregard pacing would be epic tho. Just as something for the fans to get lost in for a few hours.
      And yeah that sand people thing is a little weird. Like on one hand, it makes Palpatine feel more evil by having him orchestrate every bad thing to happen to Anakin.
      But also, it works perfectly fine the way it already was.

    • @Salsmachev
      @Salsmachev Před rokem +4

      @@Chosen_one_501 I agree, I would love it if an official longer cut released at some point, even if it's not per se good, just because it would be interesting. In an ideal world, I wonder what we could have gotten if Lucas hadn't been constrained by time and budget at all.
      I actually think it hurts Palpatine as a character. People have said before that Palpatine's plan was goofy and contrived and overcomplicated, and I generally disagree, but I think Palpatine orchestrating something like that goes way too far in that direction. It requires an explanation, but no explanation could possibly be satisfying unless it was the main plot of the movie.
      More importantly, I think it undermines the important idea that the Jedi undermined themselves. Suffering and loss is a part of life, and when the "good guys" tell Anakin "Haven't you tried just not feeling that way?" he naturally drifts away from them. The main things that Palpatine does are to point out that the Jedi don't even follow their own bad advice and are constantly driven by fear of loss and to kill orchestrate the death of Qui Gon, who is the one Jedi who isn't like that.

    There a lot of elements I like in the older version of the fight versus what we got. The blinding of Dooku, the counters to previously devastating moves. It's great stuff. Wish they'd kept it in one way or another.
    That being said, dropping the Sand People line was a smart move. No need to even imply that Dooku was involved there. I don't like that it would take away from the event as a senseless tragedy, but even if he was responsible, it makes no sense that he'd tip his hand like that, as part of Anakin's motivation for turning was to bring order to an unforgiving & chaotic universe. A universe that can tear his loved ones away from him randomly & without hesitation.
    If Anakin knew that his mother's death was intentionally orchestrated, suddenly his focus shifts away from control on a cosmic level, and instead, redirects towards the people who have been targeting his loved ones; opening the door to many other questions about that event (such as why Dooku would even want his mother dead before the two had even met) which could blow up in Palpatine's face considerably. If Anakin even suspected that Palpatine arranged for the Sand People to kill his mother in a plot to lure him to the dark side, he'd never side with him, and Palpatine would know this.
    So yeah, good decision to excise that line. Same goes for Dooku begging for his life.

    • @CB0Otz
      @CB0Otz Před rokem +2

      Imo their duel one-on-one is something that definitely should've stayed. The poetry between the callback to their fight in AOTC and showing off Anakin's strength really having doubled is too good not to have.
      The line could've easily been redone to Dooku saying something else to piss Anakin off though. Maybe something along the lines of "You may have improved.. But it matters not, you won't save Obi-Wan" or something like that.
      Similarly, I like that they had Shaak Ti get executed as a way of emphasizing that Obi-Wan's about to be killed himself, but given that her canonical death is by Anakin's hand at the Jedi Temple, I think they should've used another Jedi. Any of them would do. Also Grievous being lightsaber resistant -on top of how badass he was in the 03 Clone Wars- would've made him so fucking cool...

    Grievous's body being lightsaber resistant is one of the most badass ideas I've ever heard of. They should've kept that, and they should use that for a future opponent of the Jedi. It reminds me of the Yuuzhan Vong's lightsaber-resistant vonduun crab armor.

    Honestly upon thinking about it - ROTS could have still worked just fine had the battle of Coruscant been a full first hour. They could have saved time by removing the battle of Utapau instead having Obi Wan defeat grievous in a scene similar to their duel on the malevolence from the early clone wars episodes. This probably would have made for a more exciting first half of the film.

    Dooku was known to best Mace Windu in sparring, and his demonstrations with Yoda were said to be spectacular. Even in episode 2 when Dooku defeats Anakin & Obi-Wan, he's still able to fight on even ground with Yoda (Even though he was fatigued) His dedicated form 2 fighting style (Makashi) was the most specialized fighting form for lightsaber v lightsaber combat, and he was perhaps one of the greatest users of that form in all of Star-Wars. To this day I do not know how Anakin was able to beat him, I just take it as plot armour. Even though Dooku was 80+ y.o at his death, and out of his prime, he was still shown to be able to hang with the best, like Yoda, so I have no idea how Anakin beat him. The fight started out as a 1v2, and we all saw how easily Dooku knocked out Obi-Wan. People say "Anakin got mad and his rage made him stronger" I say thats bullshit because Anakin had given into his rage when he fought Obi-Wan at the end, and still lost to him, yet Dooku bitched Obi-Wan, so how does that make sense? In my opinion Dooku deserved better, sure kill him off, but do it in a way that makes sense, because Dooku was probably a better duellist than Windu and Sidious (Or at the very minimum on equal footing with them) but he was sure as shit was better than Anakin lol. It always bothered me because I truly believe it doesn't make sense and is a poor choice by George Lucas.

    • @NotsoNaisu
      @NotsoNaisu Před rokem

      Anakin was arguably at this strongest against Dooku, because he had clarity of mind and he was using his emotions as fuel for a bit of dark side amping. He had focus and he truly hated Dooku.
      I don’t think Anakin truly hated Obi Wan by the time of their fight on Mustafar. He was completely irrational by the time of their meeting and his master had decreed all of the Jedi had to die. That doesn’t mean I think Anakin wasn’t really trying to kill Obi Wan, I think that’s pretty clear he was. But I think there was inner conflict that was lessening his force potential. Either it was because he was fighting Obi Wan or he had lost balance in killing the younglings and separatists and the dark side was so overwhelming in him he had no control over the force itself. All of that and he had to fight a Jedi Master who knew exactly how he fought and was one of the most underrated Jedi in the order.
      I thjnk all of these factors played a part, because as you said Dooku was capable of dispatching Obi Wan with ease and Anakin was able to completely dominate him.

    • @anthonypolonkay2681
      @anthonypolonkay2681 Před rokem +1

      I agree with you. Anakin just being straight up better than dooku makes no sense. And I'm not even a deep lore guy. Just the fact that it explains/shows in the movies how dooku was yodas apprentice, and could 1 v 1 him after fighting obi Wan, and awakin makes it just ridiculous to think anakin would so easily best dooku. Because you are basically saying by proxy that anakin would beat Yoda. And chosen one, or not I don't think that's just a gimme for anakin.
      And later while it is a very drawn out and evenly matched fight obi Wan bodies anakin. So either obi Wan is the absolute best jedi who ever lived (which I'm fine with since he's me favorite but just seems to simple) or anakin shouldn't have beat dooku so easily. I would much prefer the second .

    • @tank_0251
      @tank_0251 Před rokem +1

      I agree. Everyone says they're glad they kept the fight short to demonstrate how powerful Anakin has become. But I always thought Dooku deserved better. There's no way he would go down that quickly. They should've stuck with the longer fight, minus the sand-people taunting stuff. The fact Anakin beat him without help is enough testament to how powerful he has become.

    My take: Episode 1 - Anakin is a TEENAGER. Minimal Jar Jar. More brutal battle between Droid Army and Jar Jar's people
    Episode 2: not much to change but the Anakin/Shmi scene should be more intricate; as shot, it was too convenient.
    Episode 3: just me but I would have made it a little LESS dark - the Younglings escape.

      I think it's more that they should have added 2 episodes to the prequels and 2 episodes to the main storyline;
      *entirely new episode
      # With elements of preexisting IP
      Prequels:
      * Episode 1: The rise of Palpatine in the sith, the birth of Anakin skywalker, and the various Jedi investigations that threaten Plagueis and Sidious' plans to take over the galaxy.
      Episode 2: (PotM) Agreed with most of your changes, but I would change Jar Jar and the gungans to some sort of human resistance group against the main Naboo settlements.
      Episode 3: (AotC) The Anakin/Shmi scene is fine, what I would have liked to see is more layered set design for the duel between Anakin and Dooku. Take cues from Empire Strikes Back.
      # Episode 4: The beef of the clone wars, showing the rise of Anakin Skywalker and Chancellor Palpatine, and how they started to come closer together over many years of conflict.
      Episode 5: (RotS) The least amount of changes, but definitely show more new tech of star destroyers, TIE fighters, and other early-imperial innovations in greater effect during this time.
      Main storyline:
      # Episode 1: Basically graduate Rogue One into a fully-fledged member of the Star Wars Saga. This movie deserves every bit of credit it gets.
      Episode 2: (ANH) Update the space battles, stormtrooper variants, and the duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi on the death star to not just a fight between two old men.
      Episode 3: (ESB) Again, update the space battles and stormtrooper variants, but there is a key change to the very end of this particular movie; Luke gets captured by Vader.
      *Episode 4: Vader is stalling on turning Luke in to the emperor, Luke escapes, returns to Yoda for additional training. Later with the crew, manages to steal plans for a second Death Star.
      Episode 5: (RotJ) Again, update the space battles and stormtrooper variants, but Endor is replaced with the capital planet of Coruscant, fulfilling the original vision of George Lucas.

    I'm a hardcore Star Wars fan, prequel fan. Never had I thought about the parallel between Anakin/Dooku and Vader/Luke fights. Sidious sitting on a throne in a battle station, with galactic war unraveling outside the windows. Watching his current apprentice fighting the potential, younger, next apprentice. The older fighter taunting the younger, provoking him to awake anger and more power from usage of the dark side. The younger fighter getting the better off Sidious' current apprentice, cutting his hand(s) along the way. With a big grin on his face, Sidious asks the young one to kill his apprentice. And where Anakin steps closer to the dark side by executing his opponent, Luke throws his saber away, and lets go of his hate. Years later this saga just keeps impressing me
