For hair algae, I got it under control by reducing the photo period, changing my GFO (even though Salifert test kit did not show any phosphates) and increasing flow in the tank. Just 1 week later, the difference was noticeable. The hair algae were turning into a lighter shade and no longer that nasty green. I also didn't see any new hair algae growing. My feeding regime remained the same.

Some sort of Algea scrubber in the sump is a great help in the fight against algea in you display. Before i did this i couldnt pull the algea fast enough and water changes just boosted the growth.

A lot of algae problems in reef tanks got worse with the advent of effective protein skimming oddly enough. People used to use higher flow sumps, but to make the skimmers more efficient they started slowing sump flow. This was when we started to see 0 phos in tanks where there was a algae issue and the tank was consuming phos as fast as produced. Many tanks that lost the skimmer and brought in scrubbers and refugiums still had issues-but increasing sump flow to let sump outcompete display often cures this.

I ran a decent reef tank 30 years ago using the berlin system. I decided to start a 29 gal two years ago and i have been at war with this brown, grey slime algae. I'm ready to break it down and replicate the past instead of new-fangled ways. crushed coral instead of sand for easy vacuuming and Vho tubes instead leds. The main working ingredient is real reef rock not this purple painted stuff., I mean rock with Microbes, copepods, and real Coraline algae which provides a great eco system with fish so you can enjoy more than maintaining it.

Hey man, not algae related but during the course of the video I see your right hand side power head doing some sort of purge and shooting loads of micro bubbles through the tank. Is this intentional because its pretty awesome. It will also be providing a boost of oxygen which in turn will help with ph?

The phosphate and such are bound to the surfaces of your aquascape and glass, your testing only applies to what is in the water column.
