Michael Keaton was the first unpopular choice for Batman. At the time, he had built up a career as a funny man, and fans didn’t see him as the ideal Caped Crusader; in fact, they actually sent hundreds of angry letters demanding he be recast. But then the movie came out, and now Keaton is widely regarded as the best Batman.

Okay, I will admit it...when I read the books, I actually saw Brad Pitt playing Lestat (think of him in Fight Club with the hair in Troy). So I was surprised of the casting for both of them. Not technically a movie performance, but I'd add David Schwimmer in 'Band of Brothers' to this list. Prior to this, he was pretty much only known as whiny doofus Ross Geller in 'Friends, so the idea of him playing Herbert Sobel, a vindictive, beaurocratic young officer of Easy Company during WW2 seemed like a bad idea. But... he nailed it. All traces of Ross were gone, and he embodied the pettiness and insecurities of his character brilliantly.
