That immediately took me back to Rusty Wallace at this track and Talladega in 1993. That was an 80s to 90s era NASCAR flip and easily the most scarest one I have ever seen in all my life watching the sport. Seeing him flip that many times, that high in the air, it all just brought my eyes to tears upon him landing back on the ground from how scared I was for Ryan and you can imagine the amount of relief I felt when I saw him out of his car. Praying for him right now 🙏
Literally pulled that exact video up to show to my wife to demonstrate how uncommon a crash like this is in todays times. We had a few nasty ones in Gen 4 but to not since. Seeing a Gen 7 car do that is insane. Thinking about Ryan.
That’s a crash you would only see in the 80s-90s…..Nascar should definitely investigate the car, considering how easily the car flipped, and the fact the roof hatch and window net appeared to detach during the crash.

Comes a point where you can only go against the laws of physics for so long. The car hit the grass which allowed a pocket of air to get under the race car and change it from a low pressure to a high pressure, thus resulting in the car lifting. This happens similarly when a car gets knocked into when they're spinning, just like Gaughan, H. Burton in the 500, Larson at Dega. Best thing they could do is getting rid of the grass back there entirely.

The latest update as of writing this is that Ryan Preece has been evaluated and transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona. He climbed out of the car and was placed onto a stretcher. Ryan is awake and alert and is undergoing standard tests but is a little shaken after the accident. This comment will be updated as more information comes out. UPDATE: Ryan has posted this message on his X (formerly Twitter) account: "If you want to be a race car driver, you better be tough. Dammit. Fast @racechoice @FordPerformanceMustang. I’m coming back." SUNDAY: Preece has stayed at Halifax overnight and will stay for continued observation. He will be evaluated by medical personnel later this morning. Preece is awake, alert, and mobile. He has been talking with friends and family. UPDATE: Ryan Preece has been released from Halifax Medical Center and is, "on his way home to North Carolina," via Stewart-Haas Racing's release at 10:52 AM today. It's suppose to have the opposite effect. It's suppose to keep air from packing up under the car and the wheel wells. It's odd. I've always been critical of the things Nascar does to the cars but I actually applauded this decision. But it obviously ain't working right.
@@ajclips2540 i think it works well when the car is turned all the way around but not when its taking lateral wind. Even without flipping there have been so many times these next gen cars have lifted off the ground when they're sideways.
That was such a horrific crash. Looked eerily similar to Rusty Wallace and Bill Elliott’s flips from the 1990’s. My hopes and prayers go to Preece for a speedy recovery.
I would like to point out a positive as it relates to the safety aspect: all of the tethering systems seemed to do their job quite well. Granted, this crash was away from the grandstands but it was still thoroughly impressive to see those components stay attached to the car. It was a scary crash and certainly warrants further analysis from nascar on continuing the efforts to make these cars as safe as possible. Sending well wishes to Ryan Preece.

Its pretty clear the diffuser flap didn't deploy there, that's what keeps the car on the ground in all the other wrecks and in this one it didn't open because of the angle of the car and its no surprise it went over. Same thing happened to Harrison burton too.
It was sideways, sometimes even the roof flaps aren’t enough for some wrecks. The flip was cause by a changed In air pressure because the car is designed to drive forward stuck to the ground, when it’s sideways it’s basically an airplane wing with the flat bottom and round top.
Preece was going so fast that the car flipped due to clipping the grass. The air was hitting the underside of the car when he got airborne, so the flaps couldn’t deploy due to being in the vaccum behind his car. That being said, I suspect it might be safer to remove the diffuser for plate races in the future. The cars will have less downforce, yes, but that also means less potential lift in this scenario.
First thing I thought of was Ken Squier's call of Rusty Wallace in 1993. "Rusty Wallace, 20ft in the air.." as Rusty tumbled down the backstretch at Daytona. Prayers for Ryan.
He is such a great driver. He needs an upgrade and he will start winning races. I've seen him kicking butt for years around here. I pull for him every race, I'm glad he's alive and hopefully well.
He is good! Stewart Haas just needs to put more money into their NASCAR program but supposedly they're about to sell a charter or 2 so they'll have less cars. Tony Stewart is stretching his money over to NHRA and SRX now and it's hurting his Cup teams. Preece and Stewart Haas will get it turned around next year
I literally stayed up that night until he tweeted. I was anxious because internal injuries need tests to detect. So glad he's ok! Thank you for implementing all those safety measures! Saved his life!
This was a high G roll. I had several between 1998-2002 the cars would do the high g roll. Normally my entire body would be purple because the g forces involved. It stretches and rips a every muscle, fiber, vessels. So it was common to swell up and turn solid purple. I haven’t seen it happen in 20yrs though.
I remember Petty, Davey Allison, Rusty Wallace, so many that flipped in these super speedways. No matter how safe the car, the race is always dangerous.
This was a rough one to watch, I made the mistake of watching the NBR video first where he goes over everything little detail in the wreck. Damn good watch, but it also really puts it in your head.... "Maybe we shouldn't be doing this" but the reality is, racing is dangerous period. Glad he's alright, and no one was hurt or worse.
Preece is a bad man, first that HUGE lick he took with larson at Dega and now probably the gnarliest blowover crash of the modern Era. First time the next Gen went for a tumble at that speed too.
The flip was started in the small airborne period in switching between grass and asphalt when sliding. Enough air caught there to cause a blowover and in turn the flips 🤷♂️

Rusty at Talladega, DW at Daytona, Elliott at Dega, Kyle B at Dega, the kind of crash we sort of forgot as time has gone on. But it's always there...even if we wish it wasn't.
I’ve never seen a car flip so much in between contact with the ground. We counted 4 1/2 rotations completely off the ground at one point. Spectacular crash but had me worried when it happened.
I’m glad he is ok and these drivers know the risks they take every time they get into these cars they love racing. These cars are 1000 times safer than when I first started watching racing in 1996. I’m glad he’s ok.
It was an absolutley cool race,not many times are the cqrs 3 wide for 40 or 50 laps,an auto,open floor vents or airport takeoffpreventers,a toggel or two,for the actuators,the preventors,open into the racecar,its a place for the high pressure to go in case of takeoff,a licensened dynamist and phyisics proff.might fig it out

Looking to replay now i noticied the roof flaps had not opened, this with the car passing highspeed over the Le-Mans Bus Stop should had helped for it This is not the first time that the Flaps of next gen car doesnt open, causing the car to flip, NASCAR needs to fix it ASP before someone gets hurt more seriosuly
That car did save his life before it gets bashed too hard. There needs to be additions to roof and body flaps to divert air through that car, especially now that the bottoms are completely sealed.
I was far more concerned for Blaney. Flips look more spectacular which creates the illusion that they're worse than they are in most cases, especially compared to Ryan Blaney's.
Sr's crash and the safety requirements since just saved another driver from the same fate. Blaney would have joined Sr and others if not for "Soft Walls" and the Hans Device no doubt about it.
Thank god he was alright that was a tremendous wreck and like others say haven’t seen one like that flipping and rolling it does say how safe the car is and the roll cage area stayed in tact . !
ive driven formula cars that are barely even capable of 100+ mph. traveling through a "high-speed" carousel style turn, or even spinning out, actually created somewhat dizzying amounts of g-force, which was shocking. if such a slow formula car could create such g-force, i cant even fathom what the drivers of these top-tier motorsports have to endure during a race or an accident like that 🤯 huge respect to these athletes, it takes brutal endurance to stay awake during an accident like that 👏👏👏
On further inspection, 1 of the 2 roof flaps failed to open, the Diffuser flap did not open, the window net failed, which is very VERY dangerous and the roof hatched immediately failed. That is NOT good First part of the wrecked looked identical to Harrison Burton’s flip, the first dig in looked identical to Bensons 93 flip, and the rest looked like Rudds 84, both Wallace 93, and Jacobi 81
The window net is what scared me. It hasn’t been long since we’ve seen drivers lose arms in crashes. NASCAR needs to look at that and the hatch flying off asap, and fix them. Sure, it was a violent flip, but that net came loose on the first time over. Gotta be better than that
That's the thing though, I've seen a lot of the previous gen cars turned exactly like this in the same spot and they never barrel rolled this violently. Sure it saved him, but what caused the car to catch air so easily?
@@__boomer2__ hitting the grass allowed a ton of air to be packed under the car, which as demonstrated before, allows the car to absolutely take off. this has happened before and there's nothing you can do to the car except make them go 50 mph to prevent it
@@jhenzo true, but the Gen 6s dissipated that air a lot better. They usually needed more external forces (like another car hitting them) before they really started flying. All Ryan did here was slide through the grass and hit a transition

Did you notice that most of the impact was on the grass and he car flew over most of the pavement. The first contact with the ground was when his roof hit the grass and you can see the dirt fly up. I wonder if there is a different outcome if we was hitting pavement for the entire crash.
Key Issues here: #1 Roof Hatch was useless and was broken off. This could have allowed hot and heavy car parts to hit the driver or worse the catch fence. #2 The drivers window net failed and was removed during this flip. This also was very dangerous and could have allowed the drivers arms to be broken or worse had they left the cockpit area and well as letting dangerous stuff in to hurt the driver. #3 The lack of coverage or mention of the roof hatch or window net. In my opinion they coveeed for nascars and its not right. Drivers safety is the most important thing to me and then the Racing. Being proactive is far better than being reactive.
1:20 I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet, with the drivers they got in NASCAR now. Rusty Wallace said it best back in '94 at Talladega, "We got a great sport, we just don't have enough qualified drivers to run this fast" that saying is true at both Daytona and Talladega today.
They can at least reinforce the roof to not tear away like it did. Preece has already nearly been killed by this new car twice at superspeedways now. How long until his luck runs out? The old cars had a survival cell for the driver, and the engine bay and rear would intentionally crumple to soften some of the impact. Save the driver, write off the car. Now, the cars are designed to withstand higher forces to preserve parts and save the teams money. Maim the driver, as long the drivetrain hasn’t cracked it’s fine.
If you watch in in slo mo, the car begins to fly up into the air when it hits the transition from grass to pavement. The grass was much higher if you look at it and when the car hit the pavement, which was a couple of inches lower, that couple of inches allowed air to get under the car and flip it. Must have been horrifying for Preece, his team and his family. Jesus, what a crazy wreck. It was such a completely perfect storm for that to happen. They need to keep all surfaces level I guess if there's a chance of cars spinning over them.
It's the flat sealed bottom! It's like a sail when air is violently forced under the car. Yes Nascar is going to kill someone! But they'll just say we'll learn from it !
Everything about this crash was a perfect storm. The first flip started a chain reaction. The front corner of the car hit at the right angle and it hit dirt. If it had of been asphalt, it would have just skidded on but once it caught the dirt and dug in that’s what started the chain of events
The car dug in on the driver's side when it first came down. When the car stops you can see the dirt coming out the passenger window that had come out.
Man, do I miss the previous generation Cup cars - they were the culmination of many years of STOCK CAR ingenuity and safety research, not IMSA cars with more decals.
How did it happen? Did he lose steering or what, hard to tell. Never ceases to amaze me, how people walk away from something that looks so horrific, yet someone can be killed by something much less.
The fact that they are pushing over 200 mph in the corners is a testament to the engineering. And the comments from the headsets... They act like this is a FMX race track in the garage. These racers came to race and to push the car to its limits. One thing that needs to be done is to take better look at some of these race tracks, they are getting old. At the speeds they are pushing Daytona and Talladega have some pretty bad dips and rises when the surfaces change. When that car hit the infield grass is what caused it to take flight... a 3" drop from off the asphalt put air under it and sent it up.
The front lower aero piece always catches the low lying fruit and tears the cars apart. I think that is the real cause of all these crashes. It's like catching your toe while running.
This wreck scared me but honestly blaneys type crash scares me more. Even with the saffier barriers those head on hits are the ones that used to get drivers killed. Not flips. They will never be able to keep the cars on the ground but they can reduce the chances. Im sure they got it at the r and d center to see how they can help. Def havent seen ine get this air borne that easy and fliobthat many times. But for the type of wreck the car held up better than they used to.
The one thing I noticed about this crash is how easily the car flipped. The last time I said that was when Harrison Burton flipped at the 2022 Daytona 500 the first time these cars went to a super speedway. Another thing I’ve notice is the under tray of these cars are completely flat. If air gets under these cars the roof and hood flaps aren’t going to be enough to keep these cars on the ground. NASCAR is going to have to think of a way to keep these cars grounded when they’re spun backwards
exactly what i am saying, they want to focus on racing but not what can happen during the racing, the undertray holds air not let's air through the car like the xfinity car, imagine a 3500 pound wall going through the air at 175 mph, not cool and not to mention the window net and the roof hatch, unacceptable
Looks like there was a lip in the grass before it hits that paved portion and the car caught it like a ramp and just launched it into the air. Given these circumstances, any gen Nascar would've also flipped in this situation. We've also seen cars flip on perfectly flat pavement too under the right circumstances so I don't know what you're supposed to do, we've had cars flip at Watkins Glen of all places under the right circumstances. When you're going 190+ mph, there's not much you can do to guarantee the cars will always stay grounded. That's a pretty unrealistic expectation. Racing is inherently a dangerous sport, you'll never remove 100% of the risk and danger unless you slow the cars down significantly and nobody wants that so you have to compromise. The cars are going to flip from time to time. If you're worried about injury to the drivers, Ryan Blaney's hit was far worse than Preece's wreck. Head-on into the wall at 185 mph and walked away fine, that same style wreck is what killed a driver at this same track 22 years ago. So don't sneeze at all the incredible safety enhancements this sport has made and has saved countless drivers' lives already.
Heres a quick physics lesson: while this crash was, as we know, VERY VIOLENT, it was actually better for the car to keep moving than to stop suddenly, like Ryan Blaney's earlier crash. You always want Little force, big time. Aka, you want as much time between the start and and end of the crash as possible, so the force can wind down on its own. The longer that car is moving, even in the air, the more chance you have at surviving. Unfortunately, this violent crash was not good to look at, especially with how hard he came down. However, if preece had launched straight into the wall, even with safer barriers, theres a higher chance he could have been in critical condition. Safer barriers are designed to create little force, big time. It's amazing that Preece walked out of that car alive. Im sure NASCAR will take his car for studying and evaluation.

I don't understand the comments on NASCAR needing to relook at the car for more safety. When you are running 3500lbs cars at almost 200mph inches apart things are going to go wrong. No matter what you do it will happen again. There were two really bad wrecks that night. The Blainey crash looked just like the one that killed Earnhardt Sr. Both these guys walked away with minor bumps. I think the car did a great job. Did exactly what it was supposed to do. There is danger in this sport. Always has been and always will be.

I get them saying that stuff in the beat of the moment but what else can they possibly do? That rarely happens and people haven’t seen it unless you watched 20+ years ago…so it seems to me they’re doing a really good job of preventing people from being killed at that place. Two very hard crashes (which happens sometimes in this sport) and both guys got out of their cars. They’ve come a long long way in safety
Big shout out to the welders that put his roll cage together. That cage passed the biggest stress test i can think of.

He is such a great driver. He needs an upgrade and he will start winning races. I've seen him kicking butt for years around here. I pull for him every race, I'm glad he's alive and hopefully well.
He is good! Stewart Haas just needs to put more money into their NASCAR program but supposedly they're about to sell a charter or 2 so they'll have less cars. Tony Stewart is stretching his money over to NHRA and SRX now and it's hurting his Cup teams. Preece and Stewart Haas will get it turned around next year
I literally stayed up that night until he tweeted. I was anxious because internal injuries need tests to detect. So glad he's ok! Thank you for implementing all those safety measures! Saved his life!
This was a high G roll. I had several between 1998-2002 the cars would do the high g roll. Normally my entire body would be purple because the g forces involved. It stretches and rips a every muscle, fiber, vessels. So it was common to swell up and turn solid purple. I haven’t seen it happen in 20yrs though.
I remember Petty, Davey Allison, Rusty Wallace, so many that flipped in these super speedways. No matter how safe the car, the race is always dangerous.

This was a rough one to watch, I made the mistake of watching the NBR video first where he goes over everything little detail in the wreck. Damn good watch, but it also really puts it in your head.... "Maybe we shouldn't be doing this" but the reality is, racing is dangerous period. Glad he's alright, and no one was hurt or worse.
Preece is a bad man, first that HUGE lick he took with larson at Dega and now probably the gnarliest blowover crash of the modern Era. First time the next Gen went for a tumble at that speed too.
that is the WILDEST flip i have ever seen! glad to see ur ok Ryan Preece! the roll cage did its job.
The flip was started in the small airborne period in switching between grass and asphalt when sliding. Enough air caught there to cause a blowover and in turn the flips 🤷♂️
Also I think the rear spoiler. As the back of the car turned as it got to the grass. Air pushing up on spoiler and back of the car.

@@threepea1151 Boasting may be a bit of a strong word but nearly every year they say it during lap 3 of the Daytona 500. I’m glad they made effort but it’s starting to go backwards. They are playing this too safe.

Rusty at Talladega, DW at Daytona, Elliott at Dega, Kyle B at Dega, the kind of crash we sort of forgot as time has gone on. But it's always there...even if we wish it wasn't.
I’ve never seen a car flip so much in between contact with the ground. We counted 4 1/2 rotations completely off the ground at one point. Spectacular crash but had me worried when it happened.
Reminded me of the 2003 Elliott Sadler flip. Haven’t seen a barrel roll flip that wild since Sadler’s.

I've followed nascar since 99, so I've seen plenty of flips over the years...I don't remember one ever having that many revolutions in the air though.
I've been following NASCAR since the 60's. And someone ALWAYS has to die before NASCAR decides to "do something" about the safety of the cars.

It was an absolutley cool race,not many times are the cqrs 3 wide for 40 or 50 laps,an auto,open floor vents or airport takeoffpreventers,a toggel or two,for the actuators,the preventors,open into the racecar,its a place for the high pressure to go in case of takeoff,a licensened dynamist and phyisics proff.might fig it out

The team earlier said Preece was “awake, alert and mobile" and “had been communicating with family and friends.”
Looking to replay now i noticied the roof flaps had not opened, this with the car passing highspeed over the Le-Mans Bus Stop should had helped for it
This is not the first time that the Flaps of next gen car doesnt open, causing the car to flip, NASCAR needs to fix it ASP before someone gets hurt more seriosuly
That car did save his life before it gets bashed too hard. There needs to be additions to roof and body flaps to divert air through that car, especially now that the bottoms are completely sealed.

The Blaney wreck i thought was worse, simply it reminded me of a similar wreck that happen to kill someone 22.5 years ago
I was far more concerned for Blaney. Flips look more spectacular which creates the illusion that they're worse than they are in most cases, especially compared to Ryan Blaney's.
Tell me Blaney's crash didn't look a lot like someone else's fatal crash.
Sr's crash and the safety requirements since just saved another driver from the same fate. Blaney would have joined Sr and others if not for "Soft Walls" and the Hans Device no doubt about it.

ive driven formula cars that are barely even capable of 100+ mph. traveling through a "high-speed" carousel style turn, or even spinning out, actually created somewhat dizzying amounts of g-force, which was shocking.
if such a slow formula car could create such g-force, i cant even fathom what the drivers of these top-tier motorsports have to endure during a race or an accident like that 🤯 huge respect to these athletes, it takes brutal endurance to stay awake during an accident like that 👏👏👏

On further inspection, 1 of the 2 roof flaps failed to open, the Diffuser flap did not open, the window net failed, which is very VERY dangerous and the roof hatched immediately failed. That is NOT good
First part of the wrecked looked identical to Harrison Burton’s flip, the first dig in looked identical to Bensons 93 flip, and the rest looked like Rudds 84, both Wallace 93, and Jacobi 81

The window net is what scared me. It hasn’t been long since we’ve seen drivers lose arms in crashes. NASCAR needs to look at that and the hatch flying off asap, and fix them. Sure, it was a violent flip, but that net came loose on the first time over. Gotta be better than that
I know a lot of drivers have voiced their concerns over the new car. Tonight, that car saved his life. I hope he has a quick recovery.
That's the thing though, I've seen a lot of the previous gen cars turned exactly like this in the same spot and they never barrel rolled this violently. Sure it saved him, but what caused the car to catch air so easily?
@@__boomer2__ hitting the grass allowed a ton of air to be packed under the car, which as demonstrated before, allows the car to absolutely take off. this has happened before and there's nothing you can do to the car except make them go 50 mph to prevent it
@@jhenzo true, but the Gen 6s dissipated that air a lot better. They usually needed more external forces (like another car hitting them) before they really started flying. All Ryan did here was slide through the grass and hit a transition
@@__boomer2__ i mean the gen 7 has a flat underbody, diffuser and the general shape of the car is a lot like an airplane wing. idk the complex aerodynamics that go into it but those are the obvious culprits

Reminded me instantly of Rusty's crashes in 93'. Also Allison's 1992 Pocono crash.
Did you notice that most of the impact was on the grass and he car flew over most of the pavement. The first contact with the ground was when his roof hit the grass and you can see the dirt fly up. I wonder if there is a different outcome if we was hitting pavement for the entire crash.

Key Issues here: #1 Roof Hatch was useless and was broken off.
This could have allowed hot and heavy car parts to hit the driver or worse the catch fence.
#2 The drivers window net failed and was removed during this flip.
This also was very dangerous and could have allowed the drivers arms to be broken or worse had they left the cockpit area and well as letting dangerous stuff in to hurt the driver.
#3 The lack of coverage or mention of the roof hatch or window net. In my opinion they coveeed for nascars and its not right.
Drivers safety is the most important thing to me and then the Racing.
Being proactive is far better than being reactive.
1:20 I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet, with the drivers they got in NASCAR now. Rusty Wallace said it best back in '94 at Talladega, "We got a great sport, we just don't have enough qualified drivers to run this fast" that saying is true at both Daytona and Talladega today.
I remember that. He was referencing Jimmy Spencer who had caused a big one that took Rusty out that day.
There is virtually no way to keep a car going 190 on the ground when a flat floor catches the air.
They can at least reinforce the roof to not tear away like it did. Preece has already nearly been killed by this new car twice at superspeedways now. How long until his luck runs out?
The old cars had a survival cell for the driver, and the engine bay and rear would intentionally crumple to soften some of the impact. Save the driver, write off the car.
Now, the cars are designed to withstand higher forces to preserve parts and save the teams money. Maim the driver, as long the drivetrain hasn’t cracked it’s fine.
If you watch in in slo mo, the car begins to fly up into the air when it hits the transition from grass to pavement. The grass was much higher if you look at it and when the car hit the pavement, which was a couple of inches lower, that couple of inches allowed air to get under the car and flip it. Must have been horrifying for Preece, his team and his family. Jesus, what a crazy wreck. It was such a completely perfect storm for that to happen. They need to keep all surfaces level I guess if there's a chance of cars spinning over them.
I agree these gen 7 can are so easy to flip if a little pocket of air gets under the car it’s going up and over

It's the flat sealed bottom! It's like a sail when air is violently forced under the car. Yes Nascar is going to kill someone! But they'll just say we'll learn from it !
Everything about this crash was a perfect storm. The first flip started a chain reaction. The front corner of the car hit at the right angle and it hit dirt. If it had of been asphalt, it would have just skidded on but once it caught the dirt and dug in that’s what started the chain of events
That was a monster, very happy he's ok.
He flew higher than anyone ever has, IMO. Rusty (twice), Davey and Sadler are close.
The car dug in on the driver's side when it first came down. When the car stops you can see the dirt coming out the passenger window that had come out.
Man, do I miss the previous generation Cup cars - they were the culmination of many years of STOCK CAR ingenuity and safety research, not IMSA cars with more decals.

The fact that they are pushing over 200 mph in the corners is a testament to the engineering. And the comments from the headsets... They act like this is a FMX race track in the garage. These racers came to race and to push the car to its limits. One thing that needs to be done is to take better look at some of these race tracks, they are getting old. At the speeds they are pushing Daytona and Talladega have some pretty bad dips and rises when the surfaces change. When that car hit the infield grass is what caused it to take flight... a 3" drop from off the asphalt put air under it and sent it up.
The front lower aero piece always catches the low lying fruit and tears the cars apart. I think that is the real cause of all these crashes. It's like catching your toe while running.

Crazy that nascar hasn’t said a word about this car since taking it back to the R&D center.
Thats the biggest roll over I've seen in almost 20 years not counting those cars getting into the fence, damn.
This wreck scared me but honestly blaneys type crash scares me more. Even with the saffier barriers those head on hits are the ones that used to get drivers killed. Not flips. They will never be able to keep the cars on the ground but they can reduce the chances. Im sure they got it at the r and d center to see how they can help. Def havent seen ine get this air borne that easy and fliobthat many times. But for the type of wreck the car held up better than they used to.
The one thing I noticed about this crash is how easily the car flipped. The last time I said that was when Harrison Burton flipped at the 2022 Daytona 500 the first time these cars went to a super speedway. Another thing I’ve notice is the under tray of these cars are completely flat. If air gets under these cars the roof and hood flaps aren’t going to be enough to keep these cars on the ground. NASCAR is going to have to think of a way to keep these cars grounded when they’re spun backwards
not to mention the diffuser at the bottom in the back
exactly what i am saying, they want to focus on racing but not what can happen during the racing, the undertray holds air not let's air through the car like the xfinity car, imagine a 3500 pound wall going through the air at 175 mph, not cool and not to mention the window net and the roof hatch, unacceptable
It's basically the COT wing all over again.
Looks like there was a lip in the grass before it hits that paved portion and the car caught it like a ramp and just launched it into the air. Given these circumstances, any gen Nascar would've also flipped in this situation.
We've also seen cars flip on perfectly flat pavement too under the right circumstances so I don't know what you're supposed to do, we've had cars flip at Watkins Glen of all places under the right circumstances. When you're going 190+ mph, there's not much you can do to guarantee the cars will always stay grounded. That's a pretty unrealistic expectation. Racing is inherently a dangerous sport, you'll never remove 100% of the risk and danger unless you slow the cars down significantly and nobody wants that so you have to compromise. The cars are going to flip from time to time.
If you're worried about injury to the drivers, Ryan Blaney's hit was far worse than Preece's wreck. Head-on into the wall at 185 mph and walked away fine, that same style wreck is what killed a driver at this same track 22 years ago. So don't sneeze at all the incredible safety enhancements this sport has made and has saved countless drivers' lives already.
Heres a quick physics lesson: while this crash was, as we know, VERY VIOLENT, it was actually better for the car to keep moving than to stop suddenly, like Ryan Blaney's earlier crash. You always want Little force, big time. Aka, you want as much time between the start and and end of the crash as possible, so the force can wind down on its own. The longer that car is moving, even in the air, the more chance you have at surviving. Unfortunately, this violent crash was not good to look at, especially with how hard he came down. However, if preece had launched straight into the wall, even with safer barriers, theres a higher chance he could have been in critical condition. Safer barriers are designed to create little force, big time. It's amazing that Preece walked out of that car alive. Im sure NASCAR will take his car for studying and evaluation.
Did anyone notice the escape hatch was missing before the car finally stopped and also his window net was off before the car came to a stop watch closely

I don't understand the comments on NASCAR needing to relook at the car for more safety. When you are running 3500lbs cars at almost 200mph inches apart things are going to go wrong. No matter what you do it will happen again. There were two really bad wrecks that night. The Blainey crash looked just like the one that killed Earnhardt Sr. Both these guys walked away with minor bumps. I think the car did a great job. Did exactly what it was supposed to do. There is danger in this sport. Always has been and always will be.

He got real lucky that the car didn't hit the asphalt head-first on both contact attempts, else it would have ended up like the other Ryan 3 years earlier
I get them saying that stuff in the beat of the moment but what else can they possibly do? That rarely happens and people haven’t seen it unless you watched 20+ years ago…so it seems to me they’re doing a really good job of preventing people from being killed at that place. Two very hard crashes (which happens sometimes in this sport) and both guys got out of their cars. They’ve come a long long way in safety
Between that and Blaneys wreck I was worried about both of them. Glad they both survived.
