    I just bought one last month. It’s my 18th motorcycle. I’ve been riding since 1979. I also own a Heritage Softail and a Yamaha bobber. The Sportster might be Harley’s entry level bike but it’s also a great commuter, and an all-around fun bike…..especially on twisty roads.

    I recently bought this bike. Mine is a 2021 denim black. No chrome. I get allot of compliments on it every time I ride. As a new rider ( took MSF course) I can say that this is the perfect first bike. I can easily say that I will eventually find myself on a soft tail or a fat boy down the road but I don't think I'd ever get rid of this one

    Thanks for the honest review LJ, I bough an XL883N brand new in 2011 and I still have it. The Iron has mostly been reliable but I did have a couple of issues with it. The ECU expired after 1500 miles and was covered by the warranty, the neutral warning light LED failed after five years due to water ingression in the display unit, unlike the old bulbs that are replaceable the LED's aren't so I had to buy new instrument wiring harness at the high price of £220 here in the UK. I'm now 65 and the Iron has plenty of power for my needs, it'll cruise all day at 70 to 80 mph and the top speed in stock form is 105 mph, with a Stage 1 kit installed that can go up to between 110 to 115 mph depending on which components you use. Fuel consumption is 52 mpg no matter how I ride it, so the 12.5 litre tank is good for around 140 miles although I've never run it dry. I was brought up on Meriden's Triumph 750 twins, one TR7RV, a T140E and a TSX, when I was wanting for a new machine I had a look at Triumph's 2011 Bonneville range, but they didn't appeal to me, they were just too modern for my needs, so I bought the Iron 883 instead, it has a similar feel to the older Triumph's which I like, and it has enough power for me to handle these days.

    Pretty much the only HD i could develop a soft spot for. All about proportions, they nailed it with the 883.

  • @genegoodwin8925
    @genegoodwin8925 Před 3 lety +3

    I think a beginner bike is a 250cc and the 883 is a good step up from that. I am 67 and have been riding since 1964 and I'd still love to own a 883. For some, an 883 is all the bike they ever want. And then there are those who have ridden large bikes for years and are looking to go to a smaller bike that is easier to handle and easier to move around the garage.
    When I bought my first two Harleys I stepped up to Heritages instead of a Sportster. The Heritages I bought were $20,000. I could do a lot of customizing on a Sportster for a lot less than twenty grand. Sometimes I think it is not the to encourage people to "step up" to a big twin. In my opinion the Sportsters are much simpler, a lot less trouble and way more fun to ride.
    In my opinion the Sportsters sound better than the Harley Big Twins. I've owned three Big Twins and none of them sound as good as a Sportster.
    I had to go to a Tri Glide due to my wife's health issues, but if I had my way I'd own an 883. I don't think a 883 is a "kiddie" bike, it is a great motorcycle and I hope Harley never quits making them. Sportsters make up almost one fourth of all Harley sales, they be stupid to give up on the Sportsters. If I owned one today I would change the rear shocks to a pair of 13" Progressive shocks which would drastically improve the ride.
    LONG LIVE THE HARLEY DAVIDSON SPORTSTER

      @@LJsGarage This is often referred to as a "girl's bike" or "beginner's bike". Not necessarily. Many riders, men and women alike, will size up and then find out they were happier with the Sporty and come back to it. It is less of a little brother and more of a cousin to the Big Twin Harley's.

      I’m 61 and have ridden bikes most of my life and just picked up an 883 recently and I really enjoy it. Because of my age I didn’t want anything to intimidating! This has proven perfect for me. 2 things for an older rider I think would be the first thing I will change, is the terrible suspension which can jar the heck out of you and the uncomfortable seat. Other than that I love riding my bike and commute to work everyday. Can do highways easy but because she’s light the wind can move you around a bit. I usually take the scenic back roads of Kansas. Peaceful indeed! And you do get compliments on the way she looks, even stock.

I had to get the black denim though, too cool. I love it. Very approachable and rideable as a first bike without being puny. Not to mention, this bike can be taken any direction you decide and there’s plenty of power in that engine if you want to unlock it.

You did a good job on providing straight facts and detail, not confusing to them and straight to the point. I sent them the link. Appreciate it man. Ride safe. They don't always want to be passengers and want to learn to ride and used 883s are cheap, others with metrics looking to step up to an HD brand, myself,family,my buddies,dealers,and so on have told them the 883 would be it. While not for us, because we ride big twins and are too tall, we have said this is the one for em. Kind of Geo-centric. IF you live in a large city, like a large amount of the population, the Iron is PERFECT for city life. Traffic, taxis, and Parking, you will LOVE the size. the Tank is fine since there is gas on every 10 blocks. Easy to modify to make it your own. Parking and maneuvering in the city on a larger bike is a pain.

    • @LJsGarage
      @LJsGarage  Před 2 lety

      There is a 1200, but different model than the 883 if that makes sense. The Harley naming takes a bit to learn and I am more of a sport bike guy sadly!

    Hello, thanks for a great video. I bought a 16 harley 883, it has the apple 18" handle bars but i feel like they are too high for me, i want to put something lower do you have any suggestions?

    • @LJsGarage
      @LJsGarage  Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately I haven't tried too many. I know the ape hangers come in 12 and 16 plus there are the mini apes. I've heard of biltwell chumps being a great choice. Biltwell has some pretty sweet options. Good luck on the search!

    • @LJsGarage
      @LJsGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Hard breaking yes and in rain. Most people do great without it as long as you master using both breaks and emergency stops.

      I've heard there are certain years that you can retrofit the abs system after the fact, but it seems there's not much information on it. Maybe due to cost sorry I don't know if that helps at all!

    • @LJsGarage
      @LJsGarage  Před 2 lety

      Probably too expensive to learn on since you'll outgrow it fast especially at that height. I'd say with adjusted controls and a new seat you might be able to make it work though for the right price

    • @LJsGarage
      @LJsGarage  Před 2 lety

      My answer is if you want something similar to this to learn on Honda Rebel/Shadow are common to find used and easy to manage and if budget allows this 883 is manageable as well, but I hate to see someone spend a lot and drop their shiny new bike :(

    A Sportster is not a beginners bike. It's heavy, it's powerful and must be respected. In an emergency, a beginner will screw up.
    America is a very unusual place, with a lot of easy freeways, not twisting narrow streets in hills and lots of traffic like in other countries.
    Beginners should start with small Japanese bikes and climb up.
