Always keep in mind that 7.82 was a motor tuned to reach outer space, ran without water, and lifted the head; it was a risk-everything shot for a world record. These 8.0x are passes are healthy and well below potential. It'll get there; doing it right is the real challenge.

On the first pass, Lee Roy ran straight as an arrow down the track. I've never seen it go like that before.
at this point Leroys suspension envelope opens up 20 times the increments in volume over the previous set ups.
And a 1/2 pound of air will make a measurable difference.

I did notice that crossbar in the back for sway was installed recently. Could be part of the reason as well among others.

The car looks insanely smooth. I am just remembering those insane passes where the car was bucking hard, wouldn't track straight, shifts were wild on the drivetrain. This is a total transformation from that point, Leroy IS back!
I think the magic of this channel is that it invests its viewers in the drama of the cars' and team's evolution like no other racing venue I've seen. Since the 70's I've been a fan of various driving teams and their machines but from a considerable distance. These videos make an emotional connection not seen before. It's fascinating. All of the personalities on screen evoke from the audience a hope for success for them. Cleetus et al., you really have something here. I even tried Mountain Dew for the first time....lol

observation: the smaller cooling system held up just fine.
I would like to see a stronger return spring on the handbrake. At the end of each pass when Cleeters pulls the parachute, the handbrake shoots forward out of sight of the camera. That's a lot of leverage literally putting on the brakes.
You have to pull back to apply pressure to the brakes
@@thekodanator I think he has it setup as a chute release(forward)/handbrake(back). It being forward shouldn't have anything to do with braking (just chute air braking)

That being said, you are at a brick wall of why funny cars (high horsepower drag cars) look the way they do... aerodynamics. The wind tunnel video showed that a rear diffuser is a great place to start.

The only reason he's this fast are his small end speeds, once he gets out to the finish he's much slower than most cars in this bracket MPH wise.
He's went faster so it's all about fine tuning knowing cleetus he's got something under his sleeve for areo later
This car has already hit 7 seconds with less hp, and that was probably because the wind conditions were ideal.

The changes he is currently making are great, but they still show major change until he addresses wind drag coefficient.

I’ve gone 12s in the mid ‘90s at that track and I thought that felt fast. That view from in the car facing rear as James shrinks & disappears. BANANAS!

Imagine how fast the car would’ve went with the aluminum block in there running on methane...his fastest past was on that block with no water in it🤷♂️
James Dennis a lot of people seem to forget that. Leroy was very different on that pass.
From that pass till now most of the things that have been done are for weight reduction, roll cage, new intake, and fuel system. The blocks are the same but the aluminum one weighed less but couldn’t take as much boost. But without that extra weight you’d have less weight on the nose of the car so you’d need less power to get the car going. Be interesting just to see them do it though.

The aluminium block wasn't TSPs best, though. They got it back, rebuilt it and gave it bigger studs. There's a very good chance it would've been doing 7.80s even with the old clutch on the old setup if they just put the original engine back in.
Without bigger tyres and turbos that iron block really isn't helping leroy at all yet, maybe we'll see the extra power potential come into it in the future
Unpopular opinion: iron blocks really don’t weigh much more than an aluminum
@@damstachizz you're so wrong about a bigger tire.. you obviously know nothing about small tire racing .. and aluminum blocks do not weigh much less then a iron block... not to mention the first motor was a 5.3 ... the tsp 427 is capable of 2000+ hp with the right power adders... he's at 1400+ at the wheels now ... and Garrett has already said Leroy is getting bigger turbos next go around!

It does seem effortlessly quick now, the new clutch has done wonders for the stability of the car through every shift. I suppose it’s just a slight dampener for the drivetrain, also giving great elasticity to the gear change and launch.

As much as it pains me to say it, it’s time to start looking into some body panels for Leroy. Air at those speeds is thick and heavy and Leroy is shaped like a plastic grocery bag
Even if they just added panels to the back end so the air leaving wasn't sucking him back as much it'd be an improvement, that and some aero behind the front tires so the air can slip along the sides better. They can do all that and still have that leroy look, maybe touch 7-0 and waste cars with full aero, which would be tops in my book.
they already mentioned that they need panels / aero parts to get more top end, but they didn't have time to do it before world cup. he brought it up in the video where he was discussing world cup plans (what cars they are/arent bringing, etc)

Never... it would be way too much work for something that isn’t garunteed to improve the car... a lot of mid engine cars don’t have the proper weight distribution to have the car weight transfer properly almost all of your traction in drag racing comes from weight transfer the more weight that can be transferred the more grip but at the same time you can’t have the front of the car too light or else it would just do wheelies which may look cool but that’s not how you win races

Axel Parra he said it in the video that they ran a 1.26 60’ and that was with the monster clutch.
@@ChrisSmoove77 but that was with maximum effort. apparently he wasn't trying very hard when he made these runs because this was just a test and tune. the monster triple disc he had before will give him better longevity and power efficiency but leroy has way too much power for snap gear changes like that. when you get off and make a gear change and then get back on there is a massive power shock and the wheels can't take it so you lose control. the slippage in the new clutch takes some power off at the shift and and then goes full send once the RPMs go back up giving him less power efficiency, but giving more control to make up for it.
Monster clutch is still great for roll racing and holding super high HP. This clutch is designed strictly for dig racing.

The new clutch is already paying off however there’s something off between gears. Like losing steam or quickness, drawbacks of the slipper clutch?
He probably just has to get used to it since its a brand new technology
Much lighter clutches are hard to get used to timing the shift with than heavy race clutches. I assume he isn’t power shifting as hard as he would in a close final rice
When he shifts instead of all the power hitting the tires and breaking traction the slipper clutch allows for a smaller amount of hp to hit the tires when he shifts so it does seem slower but in reality its actually faster and a lot easier to drive
I think it needs more weights and less launch rpm
He was just clicking the gears here tho, taking his time shifting. not banging like usual competition leroy. If they give him the beans and cleet smashes those gears it's gonna FLY
