Royal Albatross ~ We Have A Pip! LGK's Egg Is Taken To An Incubator To Hatch! 🐣 💗 1.20.24

- Pip Pip Hooray!! Ranger Colin comes by the nest and sees that LGK & LGL's egg has pipped so he places it in the container and it is off to the incubator to hatch!! Colin replaces the egg with a dummy egg which LGK will continue to incubate until his chick hatches! The hatching chick is very susceptible to flystrike during that time so that is why the rangers take the egg to hatch safely in the incubator.
The hatching of an albatross egg can take up to 6 days so it will be safe in the incubator during this time. Have a safe hatching little one and we will see you in a few days!! Maybe LGL will be home to greet you! Thank you for watching! 🐣

Update Sharyn Broni Jan 20th 2024 ~ "Today a close look and listen for signs of hatching occurred at Top Flat showed a small pip and the chick calling from inside the shell. LGK is on the nest and as hatching draws closer changeovers between the parents will likely become more frequent. Both parents need bonding time with the chick when it is young. They also must feed regularly, and they are now both eating for two.Visual checks at Top Flat Track will start in one week. There is a gap of 3 weeks between the oldest and the youngest eggs this season. Hatching and young chick time is the most vulnerable period for the toroa. We always expect some natural loss e.g. an embryo may die before hatching if there is some genetic weakness or other unknown cause. The DOC ranger team have a strong focus on what we can do to mitigate or even prevent unnatural losses e.g. predation by introduced predators, fatal fly strike and heat stroke due to climate change. In the following video the egg is in the range where it may start pipping and be vulnerable to fly strike. Daily checks at this stage ensure that the hatching egg can be moved to a safe environment in the artificial incubator and the parent held at the nest with a dummy egg. czcams.com/video/3iUHBL_UWdA/video.html&ab_channel=CornellLabBirdCams The next day the daily check reveals that the chick has started hatching. Today the egg was swapped out for a dummy egg.
The chick will hatch in the incubation room!
Some terminology:
Avian Insect Liquidator is a bird-safe liquidator that repels flies. It is necessary to use a bird-safe repellent only as the respiratory system, being evolved for flight, is much for efficient than that of mammals.
Fly strike and why is it an issue. Fly strike is caused by flies laying eggs in the flesh of the hatching chick and the resulting maggots quickly devouring the flesh they find themselves on. It is an issue at this site due to introduced flies that hatch out maggots’ supper fast and introduced grasses that hold the heat on the volcanic soils in this area. Fly strike only became an issue in the 1970’s and has become increasingly severe with the hotter, drier summers which are a result of climate change."

Great news!
Congrats!
Looking forward to the big day.
❤️🙏😍
Exciting news, now we wait for the little albie to emerge and get returned. Always fun to watch the ranger remove dummy egg and replace with hatch albie. 😊
Yes it is! Whenever I see a ranger carrying a container I have a suspicion that they are going to replace the egg with a dummy egg. I think Colin might have seen a tiny pip yesterday and just waited for today to make the exchange. That was a good size pip we could see from the cam!!
@sure was Lady Hawk those eggs are huge!! Can't wait this is such exciting news I feel like a proud Gramma🤭 ranger Colin is a cutie patootie 😅
Happy Day!! Can’t wait to meet our new Prince or Princess! Thank you Lady Hawk for the wonderful news!!
Yw Shirley it is the best news!! ♥
This is just the greatest news! Will wait for the updates when they are available. Thanks a bunch!
Yayyy a Pip!!!!! I can’t wait! Seems like we were just all sad about Manaaki fledging, so happy a season is underway again 🥳🥰😊 thank you for sharing Lady Hawk! 😊
😀Little tross alive and well, eager to escape the shell to join the world! Lady Hawk, do you know what material the dummy egg is made out of? Is it the same weight as a real egg and do they keep it warm before exchange so there is no temperature differance? Just curious
Aww he's none the wiser, and the egg will be safe while hatching from those flies. It's always so touching to see how they trust the rangers.🥰
It is a very touching moment for all the rangers! I am sure they all stop by the incubators to see the daily progress they make!
I watched the transfer process closely. LGK does Trust a Ranger as he-- looks down-- as the ranger looks at real egg and has time to switch hand position of real to dummy egg and insert it back under LGK. Inserting a Heated Egg under Trusting Parent does foster the Fiction of a total parent 5 day remaining incubation and hatch while Real Egg is incubator hatched. Thanks L H. Your involved explanations around hatching activities are much appreciated.
Awww exciting times as always when the year begins with albies coming ❤
I’m so happy. Another lil albie to watch and love. ❤
And so the circle of life begins again 👏🏻👏🏻

Hi dskor Yes mine is too!! I am so happy to know that LGK and LGL's little one is on its way!!! ♥ Love and hugs right back at you my friend!
wasn't the hatching date was 25th? So the egg is going to stay in the incubator 5 days? I hope we will see our beautiful baby Albie very soon, I can't wait ! 🤞🫶🧿🙏
Also TFT egg will be taken in a week or so. DOUBLE EXICTMENT this year, hopfully 🙏
The hatching date was the 27th, but who knows!! 🤞😁
Hi@@CenturianEagle It was Jan 27th But remember the albatross chicks can take up to 6 days to hatch! But seeing the size of that pip I would 3-4 days tops!
O bless LGK he is so trusting and compliant! 💖 I can't wait to get a glimpse of his chic. Why were flies introduced??? to that area?
The flies were introduced by Nature. This Area of the world became warmer in the 70's and Black Flies started nesting in the ground on the hills these Albi's make their nests, necessatating a change in how to protect the hatching chick by the rangers. 1)after PIPing, egg is artificially incubated until hatch .(2) At routine times, ground around Nest is sprayed to kill black flies and any eggs/larvae(harmless to new hatch or Y Albi.) found in and around the Nest.(From Lady Hawk Post)
🙏💙
Will the baby be reunited with it's momma? Sorry I am new.
Will we see the egg hatching in the incubator? Is there a link to watch the hatching process?
Hello Yael no there will not be any cameras in the incubation room but we may get a photo or two of the chick hatching that Sharyn will share with us!
I am new to this site. Why do you Take the egg.
Enhance it in an incubator
Hatch
I dont understand why you take the egg 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Read the description.
Lady Hawk has a very in depth explanation for why this is done in the first Post above. The hatching chick is vulnerable to black flies ( living in the grass under the Albi egg)laying their eggs in the mostly naked hatched Chick and the hatched fly larvae then make their way way into vital bird organs, causing a direct threat to Chick's life. Much more info in L H first post .
LEAVE THE EGG ALONE
Read the description. They take the egg to save it from the black flies which are all around the nest area. The larvae hatches onto the newly born naked chick and go into their bodies, destroying their internal organs which will kill them. A few days after the egg is hatched and the area gets treated for black flies and the baby isn't as naked anymore the chick is returned to the mother
