I can tell from my own experience that the sony 35mm is a must have for videography! Using this lens every time in my new projects.
Thanks for the video. It was nice to see a comparison. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between the lenses as far as image quality goes. Great stuff!
Great video, love that you show a wide range of comparisons and you get straight to the point!
The Sony a6500 has a firmware update relationed with the IBIS in video, after this video test. I would to know if exists any differemt right now.
The Sigma 30mm got a new firmware in Fev/2018 that upgraded the Manual Focus adjustment. I liked better now than before.
Thanks for another great video...For the a6500 in which OSS is not an issue, which one offers better image quality...? Thanks for your time
How will the combination of Sony a6500 + sigma 30mm f 1.4 perform for photography and videography??and whether the f stop value changes when keeping on autofocus for videography?
That's my favorite combo! Check out my "FILM JOURNALS" and "BEST Settings for the Sony a6500" to see some footage and see the settings I use!
It's always difficult. I love the slightly warmer and "better" imagine from the sigma, but the Sony glass just works better with the Sony body. The autofocus with the Sony doesn't hunt as much as it does with the sigma, and the extra OSS pulls through as a security against jitters. Thank you so much for the review.
but the signs is better color rendition and sharper so sigma for me !! shake and jitter gimbal fox and done
Started to watch... and THANKS GOD! No "what's up everybody" at the beginning, no pointless watery bla-bla and technical stuff. Finally cutting straight to the chase. Thank you for saving my time.
Awesome review, and love the fact that you take it down to real-life use of the lenses 👌🏼
Hi, How did you get the Sigma to AF. I have been trying to get it to AF on a A6000, and it is no where as fast as in your test.
There is one more thing for Sony lens - it's smaller. I went to E-mount for size and weight so it's quite important for me. If someone doesn't care about size Sigma is a clear choice. You didn't mention about CA - Sony can produce quite massive CA is contrast situation (purple fringing) while Sigma does a much better job.
Extra weightis also helpful for steady shots while using it on rig or gimbal, so sigma helps that way too
@@rohanrawal3949 Im torn between what to choose in my glide shots the only thing lacks the sigma is the OSS, does the weight of sigma help to get more stabilize shots in my gimbal ? or it doesnt matter , I think the oss is a big help but sigma is much more cheap arrrggh i cant chooose :(
Louie Russel Films this is what in wondering did you ever get the glass and which one?
I think I'll rock with the Sony because of the OSS because I can't see too big of a difference in video quality. When you place them side by side I can tell they're different but they both look pretty good 👌. I'll have to try watching on a larger screen to see if I change my mind.
Great video. But can u give me advise. I have a6300, only for photo, would i choose Sony for Oss or Sigma? Thank you
Really great test video. Detailed and to the point! Will be getting my Sigma tomorrow.
Good and helpful video. I don't know what people would do without these very helpful well presented comparison videos.
Ah looks like you shot at APU! My old stomping grounds. Great review, I’ve got a sigma 30mm on the way, now am super excited 🙌🏽
Great test video. I had a hard time telling the difference between the two when it comes to image quality. What things were you looking at that made you say the Sigma is clearly better?
Thank you! Can I use speedbooster with sony 6500 and get autofocus working in video mode?
+andivax Not sure. I haven't tried the speed booster with the a65"0. I would assume so!
AMAZING video. Thank you so much! I feel like the Sigma has a tiny bit better color production?
I'll go with sel35 becouse i use it for photo and recording, if u dont like recording go with sigma 30mm
Should I buy an extra sigma 30mm lens if I already have sigma 16mm lens or I should go with a gimbal like zhiyon webbil S at similar price point which I don't have ?
Thanks for helping me decide which lens to get. Auto focus means nothing if the picture is not crisp. Good pictures is what the client wants.
I bought first the 35mm f1.8. Then I heard of the Sigmas. I bought the 16mm. It delivered 1/5 of the images completely missfocussed images. Until f4 the lens is soft at the sides. So probably I’m not going to try another lens of this series. I have the Sigma 150-600mm and there it seems I was lucky to get a properly sharp copy.
That OSS really reduces the micro jitters with IBIS on, it's still quite prominent on the Sigma. I've got really shaky hands so that's a tough decision, especially when I'm shooting handheld. Should be a breeze on a gimbal. I'm switching from a Nikon D750 to Sony so looking in to lenses to acquire along with the A6600.
I am using Sony A6400 (no IBIS) but I have a weebill S gimbal, should i get the sony or the sigma lens? I mostly shoot travel videos and little bit of photography. The Sony is little bit cheaper by 30$ here in Singapore.
This video was so helpful! Thank you!
On a tripod and live streaming, which one is the best sigma 30mm 1.4 or SONY 35mm 1.8?
Thanks Sidney. What would you buy if pairing with A6100. Traveling to Europe on vacation and want to shoot some video.
Hi, is there any way I can ignore the lens OSS and use the IBIS only? If you know please share with us.
+Omi Azad Unless the lens has a button to turn it off, then I don't think so.
This video is amazing! Very very cool! Nice explained!
I shoot with the A6500 which, obviously has IBIS. I purchased the 30mm f/1.4 simply because I found it from a local photographer and got a very good price. I am quite happy with it. Right now I'm shooting with the 12mm f/2 Rokinon; 30mm f/1.4 Sigma; 50mm f.1.8 Sony; and the great Sony 85mm f/1.8. I also have a 16mm f/2.8 Sony which is soon going the way of eBay and a 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Sony zoom which I love for family pix. I'd like a small lens to fit somewhere in between the 12mm and the 30mm and think that the Sigma 19mm f.2.8 might be my choice,,,
I want to use the sigma lens for video, does it make a sound when autofocus? I mean, can you hear it on the video?
Cool video thanks!!
That's exactly how you should do product comparison. Well done and nice review!
But what about when I get a full frame Sony? 🤔 I already have the 50mm f1.8 FE, but want something wider with nice bokeh...
Did you use A6500 with SteadyShot on? In this test
It seems that this is a handheld test. If you perform the same test with Sigma on a 3 axis gimbal without steadyshot, would you get less shake? Does the gimbal compensate the shake on sigma in 1/50 shutter? What is the best choice in terms of sharpness and focus tracking when using the lens on a gimbal?
Which lens would you recommend (sony alpha 6400) for continuous photo shooting of karate/kickboxing tatami fights in Sporting halls? The location is right by the tatamis. Thank you for your answers.
How about quality while we use A6300 (without stabilization in body) ?
Can sigma produce a stabilize footage?
No, not really. The IBIS really helps in the a6500. Unless you have a gimbal
You my friend just got yourself a new subscriber great review man, I'm just waiting for the a7iii to be restock and now pair it with 30m, coming from a Canon rebel and deciding to invest into sony gear. I'm also thinking about 18-105 g lens for events, going to check your channel for reviews. Thanks again.
This was an EXCELLENT review bro, thanks so much. And wow that ISO test made me remember why I'm getting the 6500 in the first place, currently I'm shooting on a Canon 70D and my video becomes massively fuzzy at anything at or above 800 ( and that's in great lighting). Looking to pick up the 6500 to be able to add some flair to my videos and get crisp low light shots. I was thinking for my first 2 lenses I would go sigma 30 f1.4 and the Sony 50mm (the silver one). Any other recommendations?
THANKS SO MUCH!!! Yeah, the low light on the a6500 was surprisingly good, considering it's APS-C camera! As far as lenses go, I'd also recommend the Sony 85mm 1.8 OSS. It's soooooooooooo good and produces the best bokeh of any Sony lens I've tried so far. Hope this helps!
A good all around daytime lens is the 18-105 F4 E PZ lens by Sony. I’m gonna get that one to pad out my zoom levels for when I need something other than 30 or 35mm ( don’t know which one yet!)
I just got this lens and for some strange reason I can’t get it to focus? Close up shots when I physically move closer look nice but I can’t get a clear, sharp shot far away? Also, I don’t understand the focus ring? I am twisting it around and it seems like it just won’t focus. I’m super frustrated
I’ve heard the sigma lens auto focus is noisy. Can you attest to that one way or the other vs the Sony lens? Since I do a lot of weddings, I’ll mostly have a mic on the camera or on a mount near the camera ( handles of a gimbal)
Which would you recommend for my a6300 shooting almost exclusively photos. I've mostly done street photography but have been exploring and trying new things. Going to the mountains, car shows, boudoir, night shots and everything in-between. But all I have is the kit lens and an old 50mm 1.7 I adapted from a Minolta film camera. I'm also looking for a more versatile telephoto lens but I think I'm getting a nice prime first.
+Zuriel Guillen Go with the Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC DN lens! It's semi-wide enough for street photography, but you can get great portrait shots when you're close to a subject. It's my favorite lens for the Sony a6000/a6300/a6500!
I mainly use my camera shoot vedios,If I use Premiere stablize the footage, would OSS make a big difference??? My camera do not have IBIS......
hi, I have a sony a6100 camera without stabilization, what do you think is a better lens for me? (I focus mainly on photography)
i think this is the first lens test/Comparison without unpractcial test methods with charts, rolling shutter etc, really liked this one, you just got a new subscriber :)
+GamersCanary Thanks man! Yeah, I got sick and tired of those "scientific" tests, and just made my own review that made sense to me, lol. Thanks for the support!
Hi what you sugest , for Movie ,film making also in Low light , thanks :)
Will the clear image zoom option works for this lens? And what’s the minimum distance from the subject and lens when shooting? I have the FE 55mm 1.8 which is equivalent to 80+mm when mounted on a6300 and it’s really hard to shoot in small spaces. Thank you.
+Kat Adrias Yep! And I’m not quite sure about the minimum distance. I’d say maybe 10 inches or so. Hope this helps!
Best comparison video for these 2 lenses
Great video. I personally went with the Sony due to the focus performance.
Hi can you do the yongnuo YN 35mm f/2 S DF DSM for sony e-mount lens review
SEL 35mm offers greater AF and stabilization
It would be great if you have testing and comparison among Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 versus other wide-angle lens or similar prime lens.
Yeah, the Sony 35mm is a great performer. I wish I had the Zeiss 24mm to compare!
How's your results after the firmware update?
Exactly the video I needed! Thank you
Man I'm really torn lol. I ended up grabbing the 35mm for OSS but really love the image quality the 30mm has. It's very comparable to the 18-35 which I use a lot.
It's all about what matters to you the most...performance or image quality. For me, image quality wins at the end of the day.
Great video.
How do these compare for handheld photography when not having IBIS (I have the 6300)?
Seriously the best comparison video ever for these lenses, Thank you soo much
what do you think about Sigma 30 1.4 vs Sigma18-35 1.8 with MC adapter for videos mostly and photos as well? I heard so much positive feedback about this lens
+Orex Bayn Thanks! Both Sigma lenses are phenomenal! But the the Sigma 18-35mm will give you better image quality because it's an Art lens. The one thing I like about the Sigma 30mm is that it's smaller and lighter, as it's a perfect pair with the Sony a6500. Hope this helps!
I'm getting into vlogging with short cinematic clips here and there with the A6300. I was looking for a run and gun lens that can help be with both scenarios. Do you think a 30mm/35mm will give me a wide enough angle for vlogging? It'll definitely help me in video quality and cinematic sequences but I'm just not sure if it'll work out for vlogging.
It can, but you'll need to have a tripod like the Joby GorillaPod to extend the reach of the camera further than your arm....unless you have really long arms, lol. I'ma actually going to do a review on a new tripod I love for vlogging, so check out for that soon!
Enjoyed this review Sidney, thanks. I had to watch again on my iMac 5k to see the slight image quality difference. I shoot on an A6400 and have the Sony 35, very happy with it. I did notice the jitter on the sigma and also a little focus breathing that wasn’t on the Sony lens. The real low light test is very good, shows the power and flexibility in modern camera tech to adapt with little impact on IQ. Nice job.
sigma all day better picture image better 1.4 sharper for that all day everyday
will a 16mm paired with a 30( or 35)mm be too close? maybe get a 50/56 instead of 35mm?
I just bought a6500 and 35mm f1.8 few hours ago, can't wait to try it out.. Nice comparation.. My friend own a a6500 + sigma 30 f1.4, so I'm curious about the comparation, and video ia cool man.. Thanks
+Tri Sutrisno You've got a great combo, and you'll have fun filming with it! Thanks for watching man!
Hi.. I am looking to buy a prime for my a6300 and is confused between the Sony and sigma. Should I go for the Sony since it has OSS and my body doesn't have any stabilisation? I'll be probably shooting more of cinematic travel / run and gun shoots..
Thank you so much for your comparison. You did well 👌.. I want to shoot videos more So, i gonna buy Sony 35 mm
Great video.were thos image stabilization tests handheld or with gimbal?
Great video! I need a lens mostly for travel purposes; food, portraits, street photography. Which would you say is the best for that purpose? Additionally, how will I be impacted by the lack of OSS if I go for the Sigma?
Thanks! If you have the a6500, the IBIS works really well with non-stabilized lenses. As far as the lens for traveling, food, portraits, I'd probably go with the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It's the right focal length while provide high quality images. Hope this helps!
I have a6300 new guy in photography please help which one outta these two or any other for day to day shooting family n streets n mountain hikes etc
Really cool comparison, great for video shooters who don't care about the pixel brick wall tests etc. Really great b-roll too!
Between the Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 and Sony 50 mm f/1.8, which should be the beginner prime lens for street photography & portrait/candid photos?
Would these be a good fit for the a7r3? Looking for lens to take landscape, astrophotography and I guess all the above without spending too much on lens. Unless I have to
Non of these lenses actually. These lenses are meant for APS-C cameras like the a6500. For landscapes with the Sony a7RIII, I'd go with the Sony 16-35mm lens!
for video purposes, what are your autofocus settings while using this lens? focus mode, focus area, etc. I'm trying to figure out the most responsive AF with the lens on an a6500. Thanks!
+Cholo Serrano For the most responsive AF on the a6500, choose "Fast" for AF Speed. And then select "Responsive" for the AF Drive. Hope this helps!
it does! and when you switch focuses from one subject to another, do you half press the shutter? I'm coming from a DSLR so I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on any mirrorless tricks. Thanks!
Hi tell me where is the best Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS vs Sigma 30mm 1.4. I need to video-capture. and I have Sony 6500
Quick question. I have the sigma 18-35mm and I just got the sony a6500. I want good autofocus so I can't decide if I should save the money and just get the mc11, or if I should get some sony glass. Since you have both, what would you recommend? does the mc11 work pretty good, or is it finicky and I should go with sony glass?
The Sigma 18-35mm and MC-11 adapter will definitely give you GOOD autofocus, but not GREAT autofocus. Sony glass is by far faster! The Sigma 18-35 is a beautiful lens and will give you beautiful results, so if image quality is your goal, then get the MC-11 adapter. If autofocus performance is your goal, then go with a Sony glass. In my next video, I'll be featuring the MC-11 adapter with the Sigma 35mm Art, so look out for that! Hope this helps!
Sidney Diongzon ok awesome thanks! I I'll go with the mc11 and also the Sony 10-18mm cuz I love that wide angle and also it's Sony to it will be great autofocus. I'll go with that setup instead of something like the zeiss 16-70... Cuz lowlight of sigma is also a huge factor. Thanks for the input!
I see a pattern here... my sigma 19 2.8 does the same as your sigma at minute 3:13... like hesitant in the autofocus while in movement. Did you noticed?
+Getzair de osio Not really. For the most part, it performs pretty well for the work I do!
Hey guys I am in desperate need of some help here, we have the Sony a6500 and just purchased the 35mm 2.8 zeiss lens which we took out test shooting last night and was GREAT for photos but the video is terrible!! So shakey and unusable. Even though the a6500 has 5 axis stabilisation and all our settings seem to be right for video set up. Would we be any better off with the sonnar 1.8 that has OSS?
The IBIS is great, but not perfect. At 35mm, your focal length equivalent is actually 52mm, so seeing some shake is expected. There are some techniques you can apply to reduce shake (I even made a video on how to do that! "3 Handheld Moves to Cinematic Shots"), but yes having a lens with OSS will definitely help. I haven't tried the Sonnar 1.8 yet, but the Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS works really well! Hope this helps!
Dude this video is amazing this is just want I needed not scientific reviews just how the stuff works!!! You just earned a subcribed I think I will go with the Sony lens for the OSS and the focus! But can you really see a difference in f 1.8 and f 1.4?
I’d definitely recommend sigma 30mm f1.4 over Sony 35, it’s more convenient and better in price, sigma is my choice for what I would prefer to myself. And thank you for your reviewing. Helpful and clear
great review! how does c-AF on subject's Eye work with the sigma? how would you compare them both?
+Q Sam The Sigma performs nearly exactly the same as the Sony with AFC! Eye AF works great too!
Actually it's an excellent review. I'm watching it now for the 3rd time maybe (not at once) and finally I see that I'm going more into the Sony if to buy for a6500.. The image looks actually much more stable and doesn't jitter so much, also the autofocus is better cause on sigma I see this little reverse focus after focusing. But damn.. Sigma looks soo much better, need to try them in real life, cause I guess Sigma can be much more comfortable to hold camera and take still photographs
Sir, I need to know one more thing. Does the lens has noisy autofocus? I mean, I am afraid if my only audio recording source is the camera and the auto-focus noise also gets recorded with video.....
Both lenses are a bit noisy, but ONLY noticeable if you use the internal mic of the camera. I never use the internal mic of any camera. You should always use an external mic or a lav mic. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing, this is a great comparison video. Considering jumping from a5100 to the a6500. Sad how bad the 1080 footage looks compared to the 4k - usable in brief spots for B-roll but that's about it. Great to know if that's your impression if you get a moment.
Go for the jump! I don't the the 1080 footage looks bad at all. Check out some of my "FILM JOURNAL" videos and you'll see the image quality of the footage. Especially if you use a good lens like a Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC DN. Hope this helps!
i have a A6300 and i'm gonna work filming weddings, birthdays, night clubs, all low light enviroments. So, which it's better? this lenses.. or the sony 35mm 1.8 OSS? i really like the AF speed on the Sony lenses but they are more expensive.
which one do i get?
+Daniel Salazar For low light, the Sigma 30mm for sure! And it performs just as fast as sony lenses! (Maybe just a hair Soler)
Love your review Sidney... would you recommend the 35 1.8 oss for those of us still shooting on the a6000 without IBIS?
+Scott Johnson Thanks! Yep, the 35mm 1.8 OSS would be perfect for the a6000/a6300
I can't make up my mind I need to see how it does with rolling shutter.. lol. Great video
Hi Sidney! Nice video! I also prefer the image of Sigma 30. But I have a doubt: in AF-C the engine is noisy? I use it especially for weddings and this can be a problem for recording a good sound. Thank you
It's not too noticeable. You shouldn't really rely on the internal mic of the camera anyway. You should always use an onboard mic or external recorder. Hope this helps!
Great review, thanks
great comparison. thanks for making this video! Tmrw I will get sony 35mm with oss since i am using a6000 with no IBIS. and because I like to use for photography and video shoots! :)
@@PIXELvoiz i have the 35mm and i love it. The images are so Crispy and the Bokeh is just Bokehlicious lol
what nd filter size you recommend to buy? there are many sizes...and I heard step up/down rings will get stuck if I use only one filter...
You should always get the ND filter that matches the filter thread of your main lens.
I currently own a6300, 10-18mm sony, and sony 50mm. Would you recommend getting Sigma 16mm, 30mm or Sony35mm or Sony 85mm? I am trying to expand my collection.. I love to shoot B-ROLL. And 10-18 doesn't fit the category. not sure if I should trade in the 10-18 and get 16...I watched all ur reviews and still couldn't decide...PLZ HELP!
Hey man, hope you reply but. I wanna get the sigma for my A6000, the autofocus seems just about as good as the 35, which was one of my worries but I might just let that one slide. Now my final doubt is OSS, since Im using it on an A6000, is it really gonna mess up my photos? Idc for video.
+dont read my name Get the 35mm! OSS is probably the reason why to get it for your a6000. Hope this helps!
This is an awesome review/comparison! I've been debating wether to get the Sony or Sigma for a while now and the only thing tipping me over to the Sony was the OSS but now that I got a Gimbal I'm gonna go with the Sigma. It definitely yields a better picture in my opinion!
Thank you very much! Yeah, with a gimbal the Sigma 30mm is a no brainer! Congrats on your purchase! Keep shooting!
Thank you! This is by far the best comparison video I've seen so far btw. Really glad I found it!
Cheers! Thanks so much!
Hey. just want to say that I was in the same thoughts as you and I went for sigma.
I also use the gimbal and sigma lens is one of them sharpest lenses I have.
That's great! Which gimbal did you get? Sigma lenses are solid!
