Do you think I could take a once fired or even new cartridge measured to the 1.771 neck to base spec, drill out the primer pocket, and use a piece of brass rod as an insert in the pocket to let the bolt press against and chamber. From there, remove and measure the total length of the cartridge with the rod sticking out the pocket if any to find headspace. I want to get the gauges, but as a very low budget and by no mean certified measure. Just something to get an idea of what I’m working with.

If the rifle closes on the field gauge, what is the cure. Try to find another bolt or make it into a lamp?
you could try other bolts and find one that would head space right
