    I just finished The Cruel Prince and I'm obsessed. I immediately went to buy book 2 and 3 so this video comes at the perfect time. I read Shadow and Bone some years ago and didn't like it either but I want to try Six of Crows.
    I'm really intrigued to try some of the other books you've mentioned now!

    This couldn't have come at a better time for me, thank you Jean! I finished Queen of Nothing on Tuesday and read it in one sitting, like the first two books. I'd looked at the same list as you but didn't trust it! I can't wait to read these books now! Thanks again!

    "reductive seductresses"!!! :-D I almost heard Sir Terry Pratchett talking about Fantasy clichés in that...
    Great idea by the way Jean. I, for one, would be certainly looking out for more videos like this.
    ...and GREAT to see you on Scribd. Finished Serpent & Dove recently on Scribd. Loved Lou!!! I think SM has great potential and may actually hit very big with this series (I see tonne of potential in the storyline), if she improves Reid's character a little bit.

    You need to read the six of crows duology! It doesn't have the problematic aspects of the grisha trilogy and it deals with quite mature themes for a ya (sexual slavery, poverty, racism and disability)

    Dear Jean, as I mentioned on Instagram (as al86000 !), I also loved and flew through "The Wicked King" and "The Queen of Nothing". My next read will probably be "An Enchantment of Ravens" or "A Curse so Dark and Lonely". But "Sorcery of Thorns" looks really good as well and you made me discover "Serpent and Dove" which I didn't know (though I'm French and this takes place in France. I'm a bit wary of that because sometimes, British or American writers can really write clichés so..). I did like "A Court of Thrones and Roses" so maybe I'll read the sequels as well. Thank you very much for your video Jean !

    There's a site called What Should I Read Next that seems to give recommendations based on I don't know what algorithm. It can be ridiculously broad, but might be fun to check out if you do another video like this. For example, the first suggestions for The Cruel Prince were Three Dark Crowns and Peach Blossom Pavilion, and I just don't know....🤔😂

  • @bookishsabrina
    @bookishsabrina Před 4 lety +6

    I love a good test of the algorithm, especially because I feel like it could be really wrong. For YA fantasy, I think it is easier for the algorithm to recommend hits because, to an extent, YA fantasy follows an expected formula and has a large reader-base that read similar titles (not intended to be a knock on YA fantasy, I'm loving Holly Black's books, too). For books that are a bit more strange, or have fewer readers, I think the algorithm might have a harder time with it, and I would be fascinated to see what it comes up with.

    I think Ash Princess is similar because of the super angsty romance. It also kind of has the "girl being held against her will and raised by a cruel family" thing going on. Other than that it's pretty different. I loved the first one but didn't like the second one. The love triangle just became SO annoying and I was over it.

      I got to the third and quit. Glad someone was with me. It got so boring 😴. But book one was so great. 👌 but when the ash princess(forgot her name it's been so long) when she said I think to soren that she wasn't going to even get married or wasn't feeling being with anyone cause she was going to be queen. I was like bro we're done here, good bye. I can't with this. 😑

    Between your lovely accent and talking about The Cruel Prince, my current obsession, there was no way I was not going to thumb up this video! That said, I was genuinely curious what you found. The only one of these books I have already read is Shadow and Bone. I would say, personally, not all that similar! I can kind of see why they went there, because there is a guy in SB that is literally a cruel prince, but that's about it. I read that entire trilogy and enjoyed it, but not enough to own it or ever read it again, so don't stress yourself out! However, the spin-off I highly recommend. The world is very good, and in the spin-off, the characters are everything. It also has one of my favorite ships of the year in it! I am about to start the 3rd one now.

  • @danielaayers3449
    @danielaayers3449 Před 4 lety +2

    If your a completionist, like me, then going through the Shadow and Bone trilogy before Six of Crows duology is worth the effort for world building, magic system and minor characters references. But it is not necessary to enjoy them at all. I am planning on reading The Cruel Prince in the new year, and after watching your reviews I’m looking forward to it even more. I would love to see more of these types of videos as a series!

    Great idea for a video! I think GR just looks mostly at which books come up the most on these readers' shelves, which......doesn't necessarily mean a damn thing, LOL. But I think it would be interesting to try this with other genres and such. Maybe look at "similar" titles to, say, The Handmaid's Tale?

    Yeah, I think Shadow and Bone holds love from a nostalgic perspective. Also I know read these (and they were written) a few years ago, YA has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years haha. It does get better, but there is a lot beauty obsession in the series 😝

    Hello Jean. Thank you for the amazing video. I have recently started and completed the Folk of the Air trilogy, which I enjoyed immensely. Since then, I been wanting to find similar books, so you read my mind! May I know your recommendations, in terms of books that contain "scheming great schemes" and books about faeries as depicted in traditional folklores? By the way, in response to the question you posed in the video, I would personally prefer that you discuss similar books as suggested by Goodreads, rather than other booktubers.

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  Před 4 lety +2

      Of course - if it's fae you want I do have a video of dedicated recommendations here: czcams.com/video/QqWp7YjlcdE/video.html
      I've read Enchantment of Ravens since then and again I would definitely suggest that for fans of folk of air. I don't know that I've read tonnes of other scheming YA fantasy books aha but some that might fit the bill would be Girls of Paper and Fire, The Wrath and the Dawn, Seraphina, and Shadowfell (which also has fairies).

    I've read the Grisha Trilogy and I felt pretty 'meh' about it. I only read it so I could read Six of Crows, which was infinitely better and you might like alot more. You don't have to read the Grisha trilogy in order to get into Six of Crows (but it does help to have read it, especially in terms of world building but that's easy to figure out, imo.)
    EDIT: I wrote that ^ as I was watching and I just got to the part where you said people have already mentioned Six Of Crows was better, oops! Sorry!

    I am so glad you didn't think Shadow and Bone was good or even worth reading. I gave it 2 stars. I gave Siege and Storm 1 star. I DNF'd Ruin and Rising when I got spoiled for the ending and realized it was the most bullshit anti-feminist, awful, anti-development thing in the world. I hated it. I absolutely hated it. Six of Crows was actually enjoyable. I just... that whole trilogy was a mess and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who feels that way.
