  • What is coming in #MIDI 2.0 - Tech Talk with #Roland
    MIDI has been around for more then 30 years. In 2020 an upgrade MIDI 2.0 will now complement the original MIDI 1.0. It will not replace it. It will coexist and offer more. What will MIDI 2.0 offer exactly? We discus this in this Tech Talk with Dustin and Brandon from Roland.
    I now offer online 1 on 1 video consultations.

    Very very interesting. Been using midi for 35 years and I find this really exciting. Going from a resolution of 128 to much much more will expand sounds so much. Thanks for the vid :)

    Also I guess both hardware and the daw will have to support it

    Will midi 2.0 increase midi timing sync for locking multiple daws via midi time code?

    Will there be reduction in how long cables can be with MIDI 2 compared to MIDI 1?

    Also do you think that it can be a simple firmware update to make compatible

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  Před 3 lety

      A firmware update would
      Only work for devices that can accept the new features. Some devices could but most will not.

    I love all my Rolandz. But is it possible ro get the patch names into Logic PX? With MIDI 1.0?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  Před 4 lety +1

      Interesting question. In short: maybe. But it is possible. I don’t use Logic so it is hard for me to test this.
      Many questions arise, the most important is : “which Roland hardware do you own” some older devices can receive MIDI patch change only.. Other devices using USB could also transfer the patch list. The device and the software (Logic) would have to be coded to exchange this information. It is not a Standaert feature in hardware sadly. MIDI 2.0 could help is for future devices. In the end you will find yourself typing them in patch list in Logic.

    To be clear about “USB-only”: MIDI 2.0 is transport-agnostic. It’s designed to work over BLE, Ethernet, etc. as well as any sort of transport coming up in the future.
    www.midi.org/articles-old/details-about-midi-2-0-midi-ci-profiles-and-property-exchange
    “Will MIDI 2.0 devices need to use a new connector or cable?
    No, MIDI 2.0 is a transport agnostic protocol.
    Transport- To transfer or convey from one place to another
    Agnostic- designed to be compatible with different devices
    Protocol-a set of conventions governing the treatment and especially the formatting of data in an electronic communications system”
    As for conceptual distinctions, it might not be too useful to get “in the weeds” as to what’s different between MIDI-CI (Capability Inquiry), Profile Configuration (MPE or drawbar?), Property Exchange (patchnames…), and Protocol Negotiation (falling back to MIDI 1.0 as needed).
    In a way, MIDI 2.0 still sounds like it’s “designed by committee”, unlike MIDI 1.0. It might even be overengineered. Is it as simple as it could be?
    Paul Lehrman’s explanation of MIDI 2.0 over at Synth and Software was particularly edifying, I thought.
    synthandsoftware.com/2020/06/why-we-need-midi-2-0/?
    Much more so than the “MIDI 2.0 for Musicians” webinar from the MIDI Association during “May Is MIDI Month”, to be honest.
