      I run 4in keitech easyshiners on 2/0 unweighted owner twist lock hooks. With no weight, I can run them ridiculously slow.
      But because they're so light. Any deviation in the tail makes them run weird.
      I've got an "expired" spot in my tackle box for ones that don't swim well or have the nose all ripped up from fish tearing the twistlock out. I use those to put on spinners, silver minnow spoons, and whatever else I can think of.

    • @duhzeez7462
      @duhzeez7462 Před rokem +1

      On that gigantic swimbait you used probably not but smaller ones, yeah. Depends on how light of tackle you use, with a weighted hook it's far less of a problem. Especially with a 12/0 hook on a 3" bait...

    Interesting topic. Love to see some stats on actual fish catches to see if they perceive differences. I agree with those that suggest smaller swim baits (e.g. 3”) are more susceptible to flaws. I find that small rips in a 3” storm wild eye bait makes it useless, but I make a lot of ugly delaminated, dented and bubble ridden baits that work great.

    • @john050994
      @john050994 Před rokem +1

      I use little 4 inch paddle tails with really thin tails on unweighted twist lock hooks.
      Because there's no weight in them you can run them sloooooooow. But if there's anything off with the bait. It swims sideways. Been using this setup for years. I swear there's a difference in the number of bites. When the baits aren't swimming straight.

    Nice video
    A few years ago I messed up with a dozen 3.5" swimbaits
    I put them on another mold to get another pour
    Flat on the back , but about 1 1/2" was hanging off the side
    So when I remembered the swimbaits , they had the tail tipped up at a 45 degree angle
    I gave the swimbaits a try with a 1/8 oz jig head , 2/0 hook and had great results
    Fishing a bent swimbait slow gave a different action that the bass liked
    So I keep a few in the box to try when nothing else seems to work

    I never worry about my soft plastics. A few minutes in the sun on the deck and they will run how they gonna run no matter what. Cold storage makes a a difference, buts soon as they warm up and soften up drag in the water straightens them right out. Air bubbles and inconsistent plastic density make a much much bigger difference.

    I never put much stock in my plastics being perfectly straight anyway. Like the fish are down there with a protractor checking for angles. We're dealing with small brain prehistoric instinctual creatures, not diabolical super geniuses. One of your fellow bait makers stuck some hooks on a block of wood and caught fish, which proves the point. Good video and conclusion!

  • @mswen1983
    @mswen1983 Před rokem

    Weighted hooks definitely help w swimbaits run straighter. That 12/0 Beast hook has a fairly big chunk of lead on it. It seems to mainly effect smaller baits (tho I've seen big baits that needed weight no matter how straight they were). I'd be interested to see this with a 3-4" bait and an unweighted or 1/16-⅛ oz. swimbait hook.
    And also, don't place a couple carefully in the bag. Jam 8-12 down in there, carry the bag around in your pocket for a day, and then leave them in for the sun to try & replicate major the bagging process used by major fishing Cos.

    I got this tip from an older angler. If your tails are kinkt, put some bouling water in a cup and dip the bait in it for a minute or so. Then lay them straigt and the kinks will be less.

  • @AlIsUpOutdoors
    @AlIsUpOutdoors Před rokem

    With a bigger bait like shown in the video with a higher durability blend of plastic I can expect the results shown. But with small baits with much softer plastic I think there could be issues from kinking of the baits. Recently I shot some 2” grub tails with saltwater blend DOP that was left over from some 8” grubs and when I paused the bait in the water the tails would instantly snap back to the shape from the mold. Also there’s the concept of catching fishermen as well as fish.

    i think if you're throwing the bigger swimbaits where an anal fin would be and a much thicker area right before Caudel fin (Tail fin) l, think it as the area of a "taint" The "Taint" is thicker in that particular swimbait. Now, if we did the bend test to the infamous BTS 603/607, I'm sure that would see some different results. The "taint" on the BTS 603/607 is a lot more delicate, which is the reason why they sell clamshells for them...cough cough "Temptation Tackle" cough cough. I like these little test, Chris. i implore you to do more. Worm oil could have been another factor with a bait. Even if they were both DOP, the plastic and the extra worm oil. The plastic can only absorb so much. This could be a fun series.!
