- Here is the part 5 of a series all about drum set chart reading. It is geared towards beginning to intermediate players who already have basic drum set skills.
In this installment I play Drummin' Man, a big band swing drum feature composed by Gene Krupa and arranged by Rich DeRosa. It is from the book Sittin' in with the Big Band Volume 1. I play the tune and then talk about my approach to this type of chart and soloing.
The Drums used in this video are Craviotto stacked Private Reserve kit.
The sizes are
Bass Drum 20x15
Toms 10x8 and 12x8
Floor Tom 14x 14
The snare drum is a 14x 5 1970's Ludwig Supraphonic.
The Cymbals are:
22" Paiste Traditional Light Ride
18" 1950's K crash/ride with rivets
16" Paiste Traditional Thin Crash
Masterwork 24" Swish/China with Rivets
Sabian 13" HH Regular Hi Hats
Mics are two Sennheiser MKH 800 overheads and an AKG D112 on the bass drum.
So good 👍 sounds great!
Excellent! I play harmonica, 46 years and was full-time pro by age 20. I had a Swing Dance Band (7 piece drums, bass, piano, guitar, female vocalist, myself w/ 1 or 2 horns) for 10 years 1999-2009 and we played at dances, Jazz & Blues Festivals. One of our very experienced swing drummers exposed me to Gene Kupra. Sounds great! I listen to drummers, bass, horn players, etc. for groove inspiration and improvement for swing, jazz, funk, R&B, etc.
This is the coolest thing ever...nobody does tis stuff anymore...this will roar back if played enough!!
Wow! That’s playing man! Wow wow! Thank u very much! Well played, really
“It’s a good one.” Yep. Love your sound, man. Gorgeous.

Excellent.

Hi Rick, how would you suggest getting together a repertoire of fills for these kind of figures? I can read and catch the figures by themselves on snare and BD, but I'm having trouble with incorporating fills into them.
Is there a book with fills you can recommend to get started, maybe a way of interpreting the syncopation book or is it a case of transcribing to build up a repertoire of fills to draw from?
The Tom Morgan Jazz drummers reading workbook is excellent for working on that.
@@rickdior Thx for the recommendation, Rick!
hi Rick. really enjoying the interesting and informative posts. I would really like to get hold of some of these charts and minus drums play along backings. I wonder if you can point me in the right direction?

Excellent playing. Very inspiring. I am curious about which 8" Paiste splash you used. The splash details aren't listed in your "The Cymbals are:" list. I own a couple of splashes that I'm unhappy with. Thanks.
Hi
Thats an 8" Paiste Sound Formula Splash
@@rickdior Thanks for the quick response.
Beautiful ! Is there a link for the notation or is it just available on the screen ?
I don’t think there’s a link, but in the description it contains the book name.
