wow... my father served in bamberg back in 76, this is where my sister and i grew up and went to elementary school for 5 years. I played my very first game of t ball right on lindenager ave, where we lived. my father was a major then. i remember how the castle on the hill was lit up at night, all the many folks marches we did and the christmas bazaars we attended. my parents are both gone now, and as i am about to turn 50 this year, i will truly cherish the memories i had in bamberg as a kid. this is a beautiful place to live. thank you for a walk down memory lane. george w. newman

my dad served in bamberg in 1975 - 79, i can't recall which company he was in.. i was a teenager i had fond memories of playing basketball at the gymnasium and in the adjacent bubble gym, going to the movie theatre, the cafeteria eating with friends and hanging at the teen club.. as teens my friends and i would go to this lil german store and buy all sorts of gummy candies and cookies. one day the old lay that ran the store sold us a big bottle of wine, ahh the good ole days. i went to Nuremberg high school in my 10th grade.....then back to the states fort campbell, ky

Bamberg my home for nearly 6 years (2000-05). I was a part of the 1-33rd FA "Golden Lions". We deployed and returned; what a wonderful place and community. I am planning a trip back their in 2019. Nothing will stop me from returning. Bamberg is part of my life and I could not be happier. Without the Soldiers it just looks dead; it was very lively back then.

This is so hard for me to watch. I spent so much time there. My grandfather worked in the little gas station way back in the 90s before they moved the gas station up by the movies and then he worked in the four seasons and i started in the px when i was 15 and worked there a while too. It was crazy to see how many people knew him and i have even met people in the states who by some freak coincidence were stationed in bbg and knew my grandfather. Breaks my heart to see it so empty. I have so many fond memories of this place. Now I'm in the US and missing home. Thank you for this video it felt like a short time travel to me.

The PX has a strange smell that I was never able to identify until I learned that a German cavalry unit was stationed there.
The stable was converted into the PX and the smell was the remnants of manure.

We lived up in the senior officers quarters and had a great time growing up there. It was a great posting and we saw a lot of Europe as a result. I am a die hard Bamberg supporter and will always believe that it was the best post ever! It is situated center mass of many posts and attractions certainly during that time. I just seen this looking up photos for Warner Barracks. Since discovering Google Maps, i been returning back to where I started my military career. I came to the 1st AD back in December 1976. First unit was HHC 3/35th Armor. Then several months later around March of 77 HHC 3rd BDE (Bulldog). Our units then were 1st/52nd Inf. (one five Zoo), 2nd/78th FA, 1st/54th Inf and then 3 3 5 Armor. Across the street was 2nd/ 2 Cav. We called that part of the barracks the new post. Old post was the red brick buildings that housed 82nd Engineer BN, c/123rd Maintenance BN, 6th/10th FA , a platoon of division MPs. and various other small units. I wanted to say there was another FA unit but almost 40yrs since last there did me in. Of course the missing walls, new parks, track and other construction greatly changes things. it is only in the last ten years I have appreciated what I experienced there. Truly great times and sorry to see the post go.

I loved every single bit of germany, i went to bamberg elemetry to the high school bamberg barrens 7th-12th. had my 1st crushes there student and teachers. I use to live also on the top of a hill where we was next to a forest and played around all the parks that where there. Also going to the bamberg fest eating real try gyros. I new almost everyone, my best friend over there name was Michael Gardner spoke good english and german. I remember those hills that was the good old days. watching AFN t.v. and every other channel was in german. Remember the gummies and schnitzels real bratwurst that hung off the bun. I talk about that part of my childhood alot because i really want to go back and see it and vist. sadly all things good must come to a end while we are here.

Late answer , but maybe you'll read it: today the Warner barracks area is separated, part of it is used as refugee housing, the other part is now a center for basic and advanced training of the German federal police, so basically a police academy. I'm stationed there for 2,5 years since March for my basic training in the federal police and there are still many relics of the US-troops in there that we see every day.

Nice areal views, thanks for the film!
My father was stationed in Bamberg from 63-65. Nice to see school again and the building in which we lived. I was shocked though, that the movie theater is gone, replaced by a gas station. The "first woods" were razed and a playground placed there. The gate was moved to include the housing area and a large round-about built. AYA building is still there, maybe with an additional building. School buildings seem to have received additional buildings. All the trees seem so have grown. There's now a small park next to the main parking in front of the snack bar - my father's track park was once located there. The EES Garage (before AFEES) seems gone. Chapel is still at the same location.

I miss it alot everyone in there life needs to go to Europe at least one time in there life. I lived on top of a hill in a cul-de-sac area close to the elementry school and up the hill from the high school Bamberg Barons. I used to go to the church over there on base, movies, px to rent vhs tapes. remember the commissary and the barber shop the skating ring the school football teams and basketball teams. I remember going to Neuenburg when they had a base. Wiesbaden, K-town, and Augsburg. I remember going on the tours to Paris, Poland, and Italy. good food, good places, good history. Went to the Poland Concentration Camps crazy and aerie.
had alot of friends over there Rudy, and Ramon Bassett, Larry Walker, Donald "The Doc" Doctor, Roy and Reginald Norwood, Michael, and Steven Gardner, Maurice, Michelle, Marcel Walton, Cassadra Oldacher, Sharnah Hayewood, Aaron and Shade Ahrens, Juliet and her twin sister.

I agree with DJ Cook, doesn't look that much the same, I left in '85. I am actually in Bamberg right now as I write this. Access to the base is completely cut off (has been pretty much since 9/11). From what I've gotten from the locals it's being used as migrant housing which seems like a really good idea for now, esp with the recent influx of people fleeing the ISIS freaks. Anyway the town still rocks, nice people, great food and the best beer in the world. Less than 3 Euros for a half liter, puts the US to shame - $6-$7 for a shaker glass "craft beer" at home...WTF? Auf Wiedersehen in Bamberg!

I was also at Rivers Barracks Gieesen West Germany 78-91. All three kaserns we're closed and are now in ruins except Rivers Barracks it was turned into housing for refugees and the motor pool is a car dealership.

Thats actually so sad to watch. My husband was stationed ther with the 504th at Muna in the early 90's. Bamberg was my favorite place to live out of all the places we've been. I remember our second time there. We were only supposed to be there for a short period, so they put us in the temps apartments under the roof. We had the entire length of the building to ourselves. Best place to live, ever. (Except for the stairs😂)❤

This brings me memories! The way how I remember in February 1984-June 1985, I was staying at one apartment (I think 3 Nickalus-Marie) that was built for the Americans, but sat on the German side. I was staying on the third floor. From where I stayed, I can see the barracks across a major highway, and see the base where my father was stationed. There was a gate, which remained closed for the most part. I think it opened once or a few times. I remember the commissary, the PX, the mini shopping strip inside the building. On the other side, there was a taxi stand. My overall stay, I didn't like living in Bamberg so much, as a kid. I had to walked a long distance to BES. I been teased a lot from the other kids that were living in the same apartment with me I attend to military school. I fired back at them they attend to German school and they have to be in school on Saturday! I do recall attending to DYA all the time, stay there forever! It was pretty much my hangout spot as a 8 & 9 year old kid during that time!
