He will be remembered for being a legend in so many fields. I think above all, however, will be his fragrance line. They are literally a level above every single other designer house. They are so, so good. Extremely unique, making bold statements that do not follow trends which will allow them to stand the test of time. They will never be “dated”.

Not to mention he had lost the fight for the creative director position of Gucci to Ford before, in 1990. Comparing the designs of Ford's on-the-edge-of-bankrupcy Gucci's to Lanvin's Elbaz era between 2001-2004, it was inevitable for Gucci to firing Elbaz from YSL, if the Tom Ford's creative directory is at stake. Nobody is match for Ford, period.
Alber was actually slated to go to Gucci and Tom wanted to go to Geoffrey Beene initially, Dawn Mello switched them up. Alber is a MUCH better designer than Tom, I've worked for both and when it comes to true artistry Tom is lacking, he's a genius marketer but not a designer's designer.
Well, when I have said "Nobody is match for Ford", I meant morely his expertise on the mass production/marketing aspect. On personal level, the artistry of each designer comes down to preference, yet success of a designer (sadly) is basically the number of sales at the greater scale, as you probably know way better than me.
I'm not gonna disparage Elbaz's creativity, yet I find his designs a bit fashion-forward. Speaking on menswear since I'm not an expert on womenswear: Tom's famous of his extravagant dinner jackets as well, yet they still preserve a classical style and don't seem to be fashion-forward. To give an example on this theory: There was a half-transparant, purple shirt at Lanvin's 2013 menswear collection. You won't see such bold garment in a Tom Ford menswear collection.
But Ford mooches his big fat peak-lapeled, dramatic-silhouetted jacket designs from British designer/Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter, eventually. It has nothing to do with creativity, yet he knows that it will work for customers' demands. And it's what all matters at the end of the day.

Another example of a fashion designer that slept their way to the top and then chooses to rewrite their history. Tom was an average looking, struggling, wannabee actor, surviving as a gay bar boy until he finally found a rich sugar daddy that was well connected in the fashion world. (Richard Buckley knew everyone in the fashion world as he was the international chief editor for Vogue mens magazine! Tom was a nobody, going nowhere until he 'hooked' that guy and all the doors were opened to him. There are lots of talented fashion designers, that never 'made it' because they were not willing to sell their soul and sleep their way to the top. After all it is not what you know but who you blow! Chanel, Von Furstenberg, Rhoem, Louboutin, are some other fashion designers that were nobody going nowhere until they met a rich older man, that paid all their bills and introduced them to the world of the rich and famous. Tom Ford is a fraud, talented perhaps but totally delusional if he thinks he would be where he is solely on his own talent. He sold his soul. period.

Agreed about money helping to make it... what is beyond creepy is these so called 'self made' designers choosing to rewrite their own history and credit their success to only their talent, leaving out the fact that someone else opened those doors for them in exchange for sex. There are a lot of 'talented' designers and actors, etc. that are not prepared to sell their soul just to get ahead in the world. They do succeed eventually and I respect and credit them for their 'talent' and drive for not taking the easy way to the top. It does not require talent to have sex with anyone and everyone until someone gives you what you want. That was my point, especially when tom presents himself as being so precious and above it all. His claims of a career as a model and actor previous to designing are also greatly exaggerated by his claims of success in that arena. He is just too plastic and phony and while he may be talented he creeps me out. I suspect he has issues and his own personal demons, living with his choices and it explains his bizarre need to have a bath 3 or 4 times a day! His confession to doing so, reveals that he must feel incredibly dirty... having done what he did to get where he is would make that understandable.

iam1ina1000000 I am not sure if you know what he did as the creative director at Gucci. His role in transforming Gucci is backed up by SOLID numbers. You don't bring about such a turnaround just by sleeping with people - you have to be an enormously capable leader and a visionary for this to happen. You say many designers can't become successful because they won't sell their soul - I'll also remind you that, even if you assume many designers who manage to get into the industry do "sell their soul", barely any have managed to touch Tom Ford in his success. This isn't modeling we're talking about where looking pretty and sleeping around can theoretically get you most of the way to success. Leadership success cannot be bought with flesh.

Tom Ford is an achieved man. He is perfect in so many ways. The interviewer is obviously nervous in his presence and a bit irritating, interrupting and giggling, repeating a dismissing « yeah, ok »
