  • Inspired by Starsky Carr I bring a sonic comparison of my two favorite synths that share many qualities. I intend on making a sound library called "Two/Twin Prophets" that share near identical qualities.

    If there was a point to this video it was to show how similar these two synths can sound in certain aspects. You can tell they are related...What I failed to mention and demonstrate is just how different they can sound as well. I am going to make a follow up video to this to show how they compliment each other. They are both “essential workers” in my beat factory.

      Nice! Am wondering how close my Prophet 08 will compare, probably pretty similar to your Rev 2 I'd imagine. But since I very resently added the 08, I'll need some more time with both. Excellent demo, hope you make a vid getting these into areas each would not be able to go, looking forward to it!

    I wrote in some forums that I prefer the Rev2 over the Prophet 5/10. Everybody said I'm insane, that the 5/10 is so much better. And I get their point, when you hear single sounds, not in a musical context, but by themselves alone, and you hold notes for a long time, yes, I can hear the lushier sound of the 5/10, compared to the more direct, in-your-face sound of the Rev2... but when i listen to music played, man, the Rev2 is such a musical synth... it has expression! It's lead sounds vibrate, they resonate, I don't know how to describe in words but they sound alive, as if it was a physical instrument with phisical properties. The lead sounds in the 5/10, they don't have that inner movement... that secret sauce, whatever that is... they sound like great polyphonic patches played one note at a time, flat if you want... the Rev2 leads sound as if they were real standalone instruments, with expression and soul that cuts through.
    One may say "but the 5/10 makes lush pad sounds that feel like velvet, something that the Rev2 can't". I concede that...but they're pad sounds...in a musical piece, a pad sound might have it's 15 seconds of glory, but then it's background task that it has to cover, and frankly, there's tons of cheaper synths out there that can make great background sounds that work 99% as well as the Prophet 5/10 pad sounds in a background... while lead sounds, they are up front... if a lead sound fails, the whole piece fails. Lead sounds need to have personality, they need to have playability, and they need to cut through dense mixes... and in my humble opinion, the Rev2 does these things better than the 5/10.
    But hey, I'm nobody, and there are only my 2 cents.

    • @JustinCarey
      @JustinCarey  Před 3 lety +4

      I value your two cents and yeah, the rev 2 basically has its own place alongside the P10. There is overlap but in the areas they differ I can’t ever say what’s better or worse . I can say hands down I think the rev 2 is the best value and regardless of price totally unique and vital .

    Awesome comparison. Now I'm even happier with my Rev 2. I tried the P5 and the P6, they sounded lovely, but they're both pretty limited and ancient. I wanted loads of polyphony and loads of modulation posibilities. Rev2 can also sound very 80's, cold and dystopian which I really dig.

      Feels like doubling up a bit, to me ? (moreso than pairing a Rev2 with a P6/5/10, I mean) … I think the Rev 2 can get the ol’ VCO OB sound, easier than the ol’ VCO Prophet sound, in my experience … 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @Grapebotdd
    @Grapebotdd Před 3 lety +12

    The prophet 08/rev2 is a functional beast with solid analog tone, despite having clearly DCO sound.
    The Prophet 5/10 is not trying to be everything for everyone- it’s its own thing. Far more limited, but it has magic that I haven’t heard in any other DSI synth (I’ve owned or played almost all of them). I’ve owned the P10 for a few days now- literally everything it does sounds amazing; you don’t need to bring anything out of it, it’s already there. 40+ years and they got it right the first time.

      rev2's not dco it's dcao which is different again. DCO's effectively use samples, the rev2 is pure analogue oscillators but with digital control so they don't need a $1500 tune up every few years like some old synths needed.

    Wow, I have the same exact two synths set up the same way as you do, on a 2 tier stand with the REV2 16 voice on the top tier and the Prophet 10 Rev 4 on the bottom tier. They are indeed both excellent synths that are nice compliments to each other. I bought both of them the same year and had them for 2 years now.
    Wait a minute, this video was made 2 years ago going on 3 (as of the typing of this comment) in Nov. 2020, which was actually a few months before I bought either of my synths. What a strange coincidence!!!!
    So you were an early adopter of the Prophet 10, I see. Cool!!!

    I haven’t tried the rev2, and it looks like it def wins for value with all that versatility, but I agree, there’s something hard to put my finger on about the rev4 10 when I play it, the way it responds really resonates with me and evokes a feeling every time. I don’t get that much with other synths I’ve owned. Perhaps it has a lot to do with the velocity / after touch keyboard, as it’s the nicest I’ve played and feels much more like an instrument. Thanks for posting, and I look forward to all your future rev4 p10 videos! PS: post those patches for sale, they’re brilliant!

I have most Dave Smith Sequential Pro and Prophet synths, but the P'5 REV4 is not for me. Oh yeah, I also didn't like the Filter of the P'5, it sounds amazing, but it works different then I like to use it and I also like to have more control of the Keyboard amount.

    I think you did a great job on the video, and thank you for making it. Your playing is great and your sound design is awesome. But, for me personally I would get a much deeper understanding of the core tone of these synths from listening to them in the context of a track. For example, a simple 30 second track with Lead Bass and Pad using the P10 and then the same track but produced using the 08Rev2 would do more to bring their personality to light I think.

    I'd like the hear multiple oscillators going with 75% open filter, longer ADSR which allows for harmonic intermingling, as well as polymod set to modulate the pulse wave - on both - rather than pecking back and forth. Almost every one of my synths has an identical sound sawtooth wave. It takes some movement to get the differences to come out. Thanks for taking the time.

    • @JustinCarey
      @JustinCarey  Před 3 lety +2

    They put the engine of a rev2 and put it in a new case !!!! why they dont take the original curtis ship of the prophet 5 and recreate the original analog synth, may be too complicate in 2020 ?

    • @JustinCarey
      @JustinCarey  Před 3 lety +1

      Not exactly, I have opened them both up and there is a different circuit and chipset in each. What they have in common is SMD technology. I made this video and the sounds to show how they can sound similar, they can also sound completely different inherently. Classic prophet 5’s can never be duplicated 100 % but I’m happy for a reliable 90% vintage P5’s are like aged wine !

    I hav a REV2, that’s beautiful but TBH I hear a more musical and organic tone in the Prophet10 in every single test you make. It’s subtle but REV2 sounds always a bit more artificial. In some ways I agree ! However I thought once I had the P10 that I’d be letting go of the Rev2 and realized I cannot. Inherently yes the P10 has a sweeter richer oscillator tone the But cannot have the same type of modulation control and animation as the rev 2 , there are different sounds that only the Rev2 can make and after spending hours making sounds I still love it as much as the P10. I dig the combo you have and have secretly lusted for the P12 lol.
