Adding Bold Contrast to a Venice Bridge Sketch, But is it Too Much?

  • Does a bold and graphic high contrast black and white style work for urban street sketches? I try using the technique to sketch the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy, to find out just that. I also try out a new drawing glove. Ooh, that is exciting, I hear you say. And you're right, it is.

Wow this looks very good. The contrast makes me just makes me want to stare at the drawing. It's very appealing to the eyes

Thanks Ali. I’m enjoying trying things out and seeing what happens. Lots of contrast does seem to make sections of a scene stand out, it’s just difficult sometimes to work out how far to go with it. Glad you like it anyway. Cheers.

Congratulations on your first year Donald 🎉 I personally don’t think the black in this is over the top. It pulls your eye into the focal point perfectly so works for me.

Thank you. I still remember the first time I sat in front of the camera to record a video, felt so awkward 😅
That’s good, I have a feeling that dark grey would be an improvement on pure black while keeping a similar result, but good to know you don’t think the black is over the top. Cheers.

Hi, this was a really fun sketch to watch evolve. I was worried when you colored in the underside of the bridge with black and loosing your brick work. After you added tie lines back in,I thought that worked very well. Yes, I agree, the top of he bridge on right might have worked better if you had put a straight line on top and then your curved lines underneath. All in all a very good drawing of a complicated scene. Keep up the good work and congratulations on your one year anniversary- what a challenging accomplishment.

Thanks Amy. I did think the same thing about the underside of the bridge, I was just curious to see what it would look like. Don’t think I would do it that black again, but a useful experiment.
Also agree about the right side roof, don’t know why I drew it like that. Again, all helpful things to learn for future drawings. Thanks a lot, Donald.

Well I have to say I think it seems to me you have gone from really good to absolutely terrific over night. You seem to be so confident and you are tackling some really difficult subjects. I think I lean toward not using quite so much black, but what do I know. When I saw you do the coffee shop one I got out my a3 size Bristol pad and had a go at doing it. I did it in pencil first and I haven’t put nearly as much detail as you did, but it has still taken days and days and I am still working on it. And my flower pot is really big. But I did put in something that you left out Can you guess what it is? If you know a way that I can send you a picture of it let me know.

Thank you very much, appreciate that you are seeing an improvement. What I would say is that timelapse videos always make it look easier than it was, in real time there was a lot of confused pauses and frowning 😄
I think you’re probably right about the black, maybe dark grey is the way to go for such scenes, tone it down a little but still get a similar effect.
That’s great you tried the coffee shop, I love when others give it a go. I can’t think what I missed, there was so much to draw! The barista maybe?
I like that you’re doing it over several days. I would prefer to do that more often rather than cram it all into one marathon drawing session, but for CZcams filming that wouldn’t really be practical. It’s probably less overwhelming if you draw it in bits and pieces.
Yes I’d love to see it, on the about section of the channel page there should be a link to email me. Alternatively drop me a message on my website and I’ll get back to you with where to send it. Occasionally people have posted their attempts on Instagram, so that’s another option. Cheers.

Aaaawwww!!!! I've got my light!!! That was so very kind of you to mention it :D "A mild threat" is what you perceived the gun pointed at you? :D :D :D
    1. I LOVE this sketch. It is fantastic. It is detailed and yet sketchy.
    2. I LOVE the contrasting black. That is awesome. I even liked the black arch before the white lines were added. As Graham said earlier, it really pulls you in the sketch. It simply works.
    3. You don't like the roof on the right hand. I ask: what roof ;D The overall sketch is so captivating, that from the outside that roof is just there, doing no harm.
    4. You have to admit (gun pointed again) that the yellow window is a treat.
Well done once again. Not to mention: big scale too!!! Fantastic sketch and contagious attitude towards sketching. Thanks for sharing and many happy returns of the... day or video post!

Goodness I didn’t realise you’d posted this comment, CZcams held it back for review and didn’t tell me. I think it must have been all the talk of mild threats and violence 😄
Glad you liked it, and the yellow light! I bet you’ve never had a bit of colouring in dedicated to you before. Most people can only dream of such things.
One vote for the black without white lines. The black looked a little messy close-up which is why I added the lines again in white, maybe it would have been better just black. Wouldn’t it be helpful if someone could be watching over you while you draw and they just say “stop, that part is done now” rather than endlessly adding stuff until you mess it up.
I wasn’t keen on the roof but this is why it’s nice to share the drawing process, others will always see things differently.
Thanks Monika, and sorry for the delayed reply! I must keep an eye on the held for review section, almost missed this completely.
      Donald.

@@UrbanSketchy Don't mind that! No harm done, really.
Ha! Does YT do that? Does it really look for threats in text? I had no idea, given the amount of hate the comments are usually full of. So I'll have to be more careful and use "splash with ink" instead of "pointing weapons" :D
I wonder how the filtering works on video games where the themes are violence and weapons and stuff... Maybe there's another algorithm doing the sorting in that case.
      Cheers!

It does seem to analyse everything people type, but whether it allows it through or not seems to depend on the channel settings. I have filtering set to strict so that it blocks all the gibberish and spam, but I guess it must also look for threatening language. Many channels probably have all this turned off and that’s why the hate and unpleasantness gets a voice. I like that CZcams gives me the control over this to an extent, allows me to keep this little bubble filled with happiness and positivity.

Hi! I really like this drawing and love seeing you evolve as an artist. I like the contrast between the white and stark black but I probably would like greys in it as well just to show the difference between areas of really strong contrast and some where it is more subtle.
I know when I draw (or attempt to 😀) it takes me forever for much simpler drawings and yet when I hear that this drawing actually took about 4 hours, I am surprised. My brain knows that makes sense but seeing it done in less than 15 minutes, even when I remind myself that it is sped up, can't fathom the real time. I try to slow down the time in my mind but can't quite do it.
Congrats on a year on CZcams. I am addicted and feel that anyone who saw your videos would enjoy them just like I do. Anyone I've ever introduced them to feels that way anyway. How long have you been drawing before you began the CZcams channel?

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem +1

Hello 🙂 Yes I agree, I think bringing some greys back in will help vary the contrast levels. It was a useful exercise to draw this with lots of black, I find it can be helpful to go too far sometimes or not get things quite right as it helps to decide where to go next.
I completely get what you mean about the timelapse, I wish I could show these in real-time but four or five hour videos are never going to be a winner on CZcams 😅 Timelapses are a trick, they show a drawing come together but make it feel like the drawing was quick and effortless, when it was neither. I will try to show some real-time stuff if/when I can, the problem is that I’m drawing better by taking longer and being more methodical, and if I start rushing again I know I’ll go backwards. Can’t win either way!
Urban sketching seems to be one of the few art forms where people feel under pressure to be both very quick and very good. I’m trying to go the opposite way, slow and steady like the tortoise and the hare. I say let it take days or weeks to do a drawing if that’s what works for you.
Thanks for continuing to watch, really pleased to hear you are enjoying the channel and thanks for recommending it to people as well! You’re part of a very small club who have found this channel, and I’m grateful to the people like yourself who have stumbled onto it and stuck around.
I started drawing/sketching as a complete beginner last March, then 8 months later at the start of November I began the channel. It was all a bit naive, I had no idea how hard it would be to build a following and churn out videos every week, not to mention realising how little I knew about drawing and sketching when I started. Well I’m here now, might as well carry on 🙂
      Cheers! Donald.
