  • Fledborough Viaduct and the Flooded River Trent
On a visit to film another video nearby, me and Jim called in to Fledborough Viaduct to see the River Trent, which is filling the floodplains under the viaduct following plenty of rain.
Opening in 1897, the Trent Viaduct is more commonly known these days as Fledborough Viaduct.
It was designed by Robert Elliott-Cooper. The viaduct consists of 59 brick arche and 4 trussed steel girder spans. It measures 814 metres (890 yd) was originally built and opened as twin standard gauge.
The four spans in the centre that cross the main river body were replaced in 1965 with the steel structure you see today.
9 million bricks were used in the construction, mainly the classic blue engineering bricks so typical of the railways of the same age.
Passenger services ceased over the viaduct in the 1950s, although coal traffic kept the viaduct in use for many more years until it’s closure in 1980. These days you can walk and cycle over it as part of the national cycle network.

Clearly built to stand the test of time and whatever nature can throw at it! £65,000 well spent in 1897!
If you’ve never looked into Robert Elliott-Cooper (the designer of the viaduct) he’s worth some research. He was involved in all kinds of major engineering works within the UK, Africa and India and became one of the founding members of British standards and president of the London science museum.
He’s also credited for works to improve safety to signalling and crossing gates with the introduction of interlocking.
Thanks for sharing, with all that water in the Trent, the brewery’s in Burton have no excuses to produce more beer! 🍺😊👍

Wow i didn't realise that about the designer. Looks like he was responsible for a lot. And he amount of water thrown at that viaduct over the years....

I've longed fancied taking a kayak trip trip down the Trent from source to sea, but it's a monsterous river at the wrong time of year. 👍

Haha rather you than me Ian 🙂
I've seen videos of the canal boats having fun in the currents. Would be a great journey though.

👍 it just goes to show. Imagine the number of floods and currents thrown at this viaduct over the years.

There's certainly a bit of water about there. What a difference a couple of months can make a great video again. Have you spotted my grandson's Dylington Model Railway Christmas video yet. Have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.....cheers James 🙂👍

    Hi Wob
Even floodier since I last saw it from the church!
Did you manage to film Kelham Bridge at all ?
Road closed most of the week as flooded, so had to go round by the sugar factory and didn’t have time to stop in the pub car park and walk down to film it

I bet those fields are full of nutrients after the water level drops.

You're not wrong. This section is tidal too. I wonder if any salt water get's overspilled.
