Decoded | EP 29| Mandai: The lesser-known massacre of Northeast India

- Until June 7, 1980, Mandai hardly featured on any map. It was just a nondescript village located about 34 km from Tripura’s capital Agartala. But post-June 8, it shot into the limelight, like Nellie, for the massacre that took place in the region.
On June 1, 1980, Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti (TUJS) had called a shutdown in Old Mandwi. The shutdown continued till June 6. Amid the ongoing strike, three TUJS volunteers reportedly disappeared from Amarpur in Gomati District of Tripura while picketing in support of the bandh.
Shortly after the incident, one tribal fruit trader was attacked at Lembucherra market, located on the outskirts of Agartala city. The tension soon boiled over. According to eyewitnesses, arson, looting and attacks in non-tribal areas dominated the headlines of June 6 and June 7. And then came June 8. That day, eyewitnesses say, Bengali families, anticipating further escalation and a worsening law-and-order situation, were evacuating the village when an armed, angry mob launched the deadly attack.
Hours later, 225 people had been butchered. Many people say the official figure of 225 declared was way off the mark, and that the real figure stands above 400. In this episode, we try to Decode what led to Tripura’s biggest and yet somehow lesser-known massacre.

Limited knowledge is very dangerous. Eastmojo your team should take a good look of the situation from both sides of the point being biased won't take you any further. Plus point why only mentioned about Bengali population being affected? Why haven't you thought of why this has happened? Dont know what tribals are fighting for if Rights? They are indian citizen and even enjoys reservation under ST category. If they are fighting for, land? they have Autonomy over 2/3 of the land under TAADC. They sees violence as an solution to some problem, still having the audacity to play victim card.

Most bengalis in plains do not support bengali immigrantion of bangladeshi. Than what are you fighting for, Rights? You fall under ST and have reservation in both collages and government. Then what are you fighting for Land? Indogenous tripura people have 2/3 of the land under TAADC.
We bengali look forward to cooperate with tribals in creating a great tripura, but its possible if tribals desires to make tripura great, or they can continue fighting for what they already have or cant have.

We specifically, I and people of my locality don't support any illegal immigration of bangaldeshi, its a straight violation of Indian law, and should be strictly condemned. I appreciate the tribals efforts in stopping bangladeshi illegal immigration, in tripura but some tribal sadly disregard indogenous bengalis saying them immigrants but not by all tribals. Its our land, we both indogenous tribals and bengalis shares it and its out responsibility to protect each other and the land of Tripura.
Ya bengali population rose significantly and as indogenous tribals felt insecure So, govt. made ADCs. And thats a great way to give tribal communities their own cultural and representative autonomy.
Bangladeshi and benaglis are totally different people and most tripura bangali are hindus.
Hopefuly, more people should understand this Bangalis are not likke Shinhales of Sri Lanka, though we have more representative but they are liable to listen the interests and opinion of tribals aswell.

Why? Share preciously which part of report was wrong with evidence. Mandai event was put very mildly here. The horror was so much more worse...not even children , pregnant women was spared.....hardly any Bengali survived...history can be whitewashed
