    It's very fitting that this ends with an Aer Lingus Boeing blasting into the Irish skies, Aer Lingus was a source of national pride for the nation, a symbol of Ireland around the world and independence at home. Even to this day, as the aviation industry and Ireland as a whole has changed, many still look at Aer Lingus with pride.

    It's an interesting mini-documentary on how Ireland saw itself in the 1960s. Not all positive, like the children pouring into the modern school - to learn about the different sorts of sinning - and what to do about it. Some people think Ireland should change its anthem, but this is a good tune. They shouldn't change it.

      Are you kidding? This is one of the best anthems I’ve heard in a while! It’s beautiful, emotional and proud. And better yet: it’s sung properly, unlike the US anthem...

      “Sung properly”? Lmaoo have you ever heard anyone sing this anthem?
      Usually after the “Seantír ár sinsear feasta” line, people tend to break out into this mumbled humming as most people don’t know the rest of the song. Only for the last line do people start singing again.
      I’m only here to poke fun, no harm intended, but christ I wouldn’t describe Irish people singing this anthem as singing it properly. It’s a proper good anthem, but we can’t sing it to save our lives. I’m an adult and only now trying to learn the lyrics haha.

    Some years ago, I think I saw a documentary on Radio Teilifis (pronounced 'telefish' by the way) Eireann and someone once recalled how they watched telly until 'the plane took off' only in Eire did you get that. I'm not sure if RTE still used this closedown sequence (albeit an updated one) in the mid 70s but that didn't stop me using it in my first novel Runaway In The Night. Peter Finnegan, the main character, is from Cork hence the reason why I used it in a scene early on in the novel.
    I also remember seeing this clip elsewhere (but without the RTE ident seen here) and someone describing it as being a bit Stalinist. How fecking insulting is that to the Irish? Eire at the time WASN'T fecking Stalinist at all - it was just a different time when abortion was unheard of and unmarried young women (or those 'with child') were slung in the Magdalen Laundries. If I mentioned about Ireland being 'Stalinist' to my mum, she'd do her f****** pieces and why? Because SHE'S Irish.

    • @spacemooseireland
      @spacemooseireland  Před 8 lety +5

      +Bearraigh Lunt Ireland was very proud in the 1960s not to think of itself any more as a third world nation (though others might still have). Unlike the rest of Europe just after WW2 there was almost no development in the country for over a decade and a half so actually being able to do amazing things like give most people electricity or having working trains or jets and the like based in the country was considered something to be really proud about. Ireland kept being the sick man of western Europe until the plans for bringing businesses to the country with low taxation happened at the end of the 1980's. You shold see my own version of this movie I made for the 21st century, search for: What-If 21st Century RTÉ Closedown (Kieran Griffith) it also has the 1960's and 1970/80's closedowns before it. And of course they wouldnt need it now since all channels in Ireland run 24/7.

You seemed to say that Ireland was a better place in the 1960's then it is today (The reality is that it has always been a great place since the famines.). Too many people think things were better in the past then they are today worldwide. People are living longer and healthier lives and all are far better off now then in the 60's also. I wouldn't suggest this film was a founding template for the late night station sign off. Indeed, it reaches back to propaganda movies of the early Soviet and PRofC. But it is a very stirring bit of collage and you can't help but shed a bit of tear for the climactic take-off of the Aer Lingus 707. All of, sixty years ago this very evening. I have a small pang of regret though, which is my late father was part of the inaugural line-up and hosted a weekly show of live jazz music under the title of 'For Moderns'. He even debuted ahead of Gay Byrne. Alas, no video survives, or even a still shot of the broadcasts.

      Surprised to see someone else see the Soviet connection. Obviously the USSR anthem had a little bit more emphasis on the industry and the military which were proud traditions of the nation.
      It's all propaganda, but is it really that bad to teach people to be proud of our nation? It's not like British nationalism or American nationalism were they are proud of blowing up innocent people and starving them. For me, it can only be beneficial.
