    I'm a native speaker who prides myself on my use of the English language. I scored a 9/10 on the C2 section of the test, I failed the last question. I felt that C. "I can afford it." was a better answer to the question "How can you get by on that salary?" That response would indicate, at least to me, someone who is working a job that pays poorly but has some other means of financial security so they don't need to search for a better-paying job. "I need to job hunt" implicitly indicates that the individual in question CANNOT "get by on that salary".

      Same here. I'm a native (American) English speaker so I was wondering if the difference was British vs. American, but it seems like the question implies that the asker isn't sure if the other person could afford to live on their salary or not. If they can afford it with their salary, then C is correct. If not, then B would be correct.

    • @apetass123
      @apetass123 Před 11 měsíci +131

      Yeah, I think they messed that one up. If the reply were, "I can't; I need to job hunt", it would've made sense. But on the positive side, if I can join native speakers in criticising the C2 part, I guess I passed lol.

    • @EmergencyTaco2
      @EmergencyTaco2 Před 11 měsíci +43

      @@apetass123 Yeah if that was the option then the answer would make sense, but as it currently is it seemed weird to me. But if you're noticing the same thing then your English level is excellent!

      I'm not native speaker, but I understand this question this way: HOW can you get by on THAT salary? a) I can get it (it's hard but I manage), b) I need to job hunt (I can't, but I don't worry you about my problems), c) I can affod it ( yeeaah, I have low expectations so I'm ok)

      Yes, it is. But the worst is the pronunciation. By a landslide. Especially for us french. I am always puzzled by native english speakers who say that the french language is so difficult in comparison to english. That's just wrong. My guess is that since language learning is not mandatory in most english speaking countries, english speakers never learn to learn, and hence, naturally suck at it.

    • @jakke1975
      @jakke1975 Před měsícem

      If you think English is difficult ... try Dutch. To me it comes naturally but I've heard people cuss on it more than once ;)
      But yeah, the internet is full of examples of all the things that don't make any sense but to people who speak English already. Practically speaking, it's not that bad though. Exposure to a language is the most important thing for people to learn and that is where English excels. Turn on the internet, TV, radio, ... English is everywhere and it's easy to practice it as well. It's a language with comfortable sounds that sit well with most people so I wouldn't really call it "complicated".

      It's MUCH worse today, clearly, just looking at the comments sections in 90% of internet web pages. When I was a freshman in a small university in 1977, it had gotten bad enough that for the first time, there was a mandatory writing screening test -- to force deficient writers into a remedial English / writing class, for those who would clearly struggle badly in ordinary freshman English, which was mandatory.
      I can only imagine how MASSIVELY the proportion of college students badly needing such remedial training having ballooned massively in the intervening 46 plus years.
      I often wonder if American K-12 education even includes writing, much less grading actual papers AT ALL, given the lack of awareness of English vocabulary, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and on and on.

How can you afford it (assumption being How can you currently/presently afford it) , Would not the answer, I CAN afford it (assumption being Currently/presently afford it as an affirmation that the salary is not a problem.) not also work here? I guess I am confused here due to the lack of context/perception of the q/a. I probably wouldn't have asked the question in the way it was here. I would have said something like, Are you able to afford the salary? Then the need to job hunt would be a better fit because the question provides a clearer intent in my mind. Maybe I am Just weird. Hi Greg,
    I really appreciate your work and am grateful for this video here but I feel like the questions were a bit too easy. I've only made 1 single mistake (in the C2 section) suggesting a C2 level but I'm convinced that I'm stuck at C1. Actually, I have been for quite a while and I'm currently trying to push past that plateau by dedicating a few minutes a day to "studying". Would you mind doing another video where you focus on the C1/C2 levels and present us with some more challenging questions? A greeting would go in the front of a sentence for an introduction instead of putting it at the end; the way you worded your sentence was like saying hello and thanks, which would be interpreted as hi and bye together.
      Common wording would start with saying hi (name) or hello because the word "greetings" is outdated, and for saying goodbye, it would just be "thanks" or "thank you".

    I passed all levels, and only missed one in C2. But the one I missed in C2 is the one that many people are clamoring about. In that last question, "How can you get by on that salary?", the implication is that they can and it's puzzling to the person asking. Therefore, the answer logically seems to be, [Not to worry]; "I can afford it."

    • @nox8730

      To me, this implies that it is puzzling he even manages to get by with it. Hence the answer "[Yeah], i need to job hunt". Furthermore, i am not a native speaker (french), but i would never use "to afford" in this context. Sounds mighty awkward. I would rather use "i can manage". You can "afford a car", to "let things alone for a few hours"... but you can't "afford to get by". You "manage to get by".

      @@Hernal03Well, i can understand your reasons, when said like this. It is true that things are not getting better, including here, in Europe. But i thought that maybe trying these with a foreign language would be more meaningful. Do you speak only english? It's probably more fun to test for a foreign language. It is sorts of like reaping the fruits of years of efforts. Without efforts, no prize, and i never even considered testing in my mother tongue. So, i couldn't really understand your reaction.
      It is not stated that it is for non-english speakers, and even if it were stated, that would be pointless, because people take the tests they want. No, i was more thinking from a logical standpoint. Obviously you would get a good score. As a native, there is not much to test, right? Or at the very least, there shouldn't be. But indeed, i tend to forget that there are indeed people who suck at their mother tongue. It hurts just thinking about it. I worked hard for a long time because i wanted to respect the languages i learned. And the fact that some natives do not respect their own languages stings. It is simply that those tests seem to - or should - have a point only for those learning the language.

    33:45. I’m American. While it might not be common to say, “All at once, a cat appeared,” I don’t think it’s grammatically incorrect. I’m confused about that one. In fact, I just looked up the definition of “all at once,” and the definition was, “suddenly.” All three answers are grammatically correct to replace the word “suddenly” in the first question of level C2.

    I have a doubt. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not questioning you. It's just that I don't know better and don't get it. It's in question n1 on C2 level: What answer cannot replace Suddenly? I think the correct answer is: Out of nowhere instead of "All at once". I understand their meanings are very close and both could almost be exchangeable but, to me there's a nuance that makes the whole difference between them. I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks a mil.

    • @melanp4698
      @melanp4698 Před rokem +3

      Out of nowhere is by far the best replacement of suddenly out of those 3 choices. I find that question a little "hmh" though because according to the dictionary, they're all synonyms for suddenly, so i would actually consider that answer wrong.
      There is an implied meaning to "all" though, meaning more than 1. You dont say "all" about 1 cat, so "all at once" sounds wrong even though it is technically correct.
      In this sentence however, it would make much more sense: "All at once, fifteen cats appeared."
      Edit: Thought it said your comment was 1 day old lol, but better late than never i guess :)

    10 B2; "Yes, I have" is not correct. "Yes, I have had" leaving out 'a cat in the past' is correct. The question is asked in the past, not present tense; so the correct answer is the one in the past tense "I have had ...". Maybe revise the question and answers to make it more grammatically precise. Very last question is ambiguous given no context for the sentence, like someone maybe about to buy a car, and a friend asking the question. In that scenario, "I can afford it" would pass. Questions and answers are good though for this elementary exercise; thanks for helping improve the general level of English out there, I'm sure many people benefit from your videos.

    I would be interested to know the median level of English among native English speakers (i.e. those born in the UK). It interests me because when we lived in France, I realised that about as many French people speak good French as English people speak good English, and the level of adult literacy is similar.

      Many native English speakers would struggle with some of these questions, particularly the use of the subjunctive in Q4 of the C2 level. I estimate that no more than 25% of native English speakers would answer this question correctly. A maximum of 5% would be able to explain why A is the correct answer.

    • @kathilisi3019
      @kathilisi3019 Před 11 měsíci +2

      A lot of native speakers (in any language) care more about meaning than grammar, and might choose an answer that conveys the desired meaning over another answer that is grammatically correct but seems to slightly miss the point.
      Also, I spent one school term in England when I was 15, and I found that while I wasn't completely fluent in conversational English, my grammar and spelling was better than that of my peers, because as an ESL learner I had learned these things methodically, while they were just sort of expected to get it right sooner or later. The other kids were particularly bad at spelling Latin-based words where the pronunciation didn't match up with the spelling. For example, I had a discussion with some schoolmates about the word "vulnerable", which they wanted to spell "vunrable" or "vonrable". When I finally understood what they were talking about, I explained the Latin root word to them, and they didn't believe me until the teacher confirmed it.

      @@thebouncer9107ive got a understanding of why i got that answer wrong because of the context like for example when it shows you “I suggest that she reads that book” it sounds like that person is saying to the other that she should read it but more aggressive and if you change it to “I suggest that she read that book”. It is different because if you read it differently like the tonality of it, it sounds like she told the person in a more calming way.

      All at once sounds weird in this context. To use it, you really need several subjects or objects… I mean, there’s only one cat there. If there had been several cats, then we could’ve used it. But even with many cats, I totally agree with the first person commented, these cats might’ve appeared all at the same time, but the emphasis would’ve been on their simultaneous appearance, but not on the unexpected one.
