- I visited Groningen to watch the KNVB Quarter Final vs Fortuna Sittard in what was baltic conditions. I met Lazio fan and Groningen player Luciano Valente where he gifted his shirt as well!

One can say whatever they want about FC Groningen but it's a big club in The Netherlands. They always used to place top 7 in the the eredivisie and gave us Suarez, Van Dijk, Robben, Tadic, etc.
The south-side of the stadium-seating is called 'the 'Koeman Tribune', named after the fáther of Ronald(current national coach of NL), and Erwin Koeman. Their father, Martin Koeman(r.i.p) was an important and influential man at FC Groningen and was responsible for the developing of the Youth-department of the club!

And...Feyenoord. my no2 Club in the Netherlands!
It was a painful 'family-reunion', when Ronald Koeman was coach of Feyenoord, and had to come to FC Groningen, his father and brother watching in the stadium...
And FC Groningen gave Feyenoord a gigantic asskicking; 6-0!(team with Tadic, Virdil van Dijk,...great times!...well not for Feyenoord perhaps... :P)

It's unbelievable how many iconic clubs in the Netherlands such as FC Groningen, ADO Den Haag, Roda JC, Willem II, NAC Breda or De Graafschap currently find themselves in the second tier...and I even have a soft spot for the smaller, but well-supported clubs such as FC Den Bosch or Cambuur. In terms of attraction, the Dutch 2nd tier can easily compete with the current English Championship or the 2. Bundesliga in Germany where plenty of the 2nd tier teams once were longstanding top-flight clubs with big names even in international football, regardless of the fact that most stadiums in the 'Keuken Kampioen Divisie' (the current name of Eerste Divisie for sponsorship reasons) might be much smaller. But that's lovely and cosy from my point of view. The atmosphere of Dutch football is absolutely unique and even the smaller clubs are drawing big support with an attendance of 5,000 or 6,000 'only' which still means the smaller stadiums are quite packed. The stadium was almost sold out. You see alot of empty seats because everyone like to stand behind the goal called the Z-SIDE.

Did you know that you that you can check-in with your bankcard at the gates at Dutch railway stations and busses? Saves you the extra fee of printing the ticket and is way more convenient. The only thing is that you should not forget to check-out again, otherwise it will cost you way more.
You can even book tickets online via the app or site the day, or longer, before your trip which saves you even more money (outside rush hours)

By the way… you bought a ticket at the vending machine to catch a train. Nowadays you can check in and check out with your debitcard, creditcard or apple or google pay at the check in gate. Save you a lot of time when you are in a hurry.
