I appreciate that you guys tried to highlight the good of this device rather than outright dismiss it as a lazy cash grab by SNK. A few comments:
- It was $100 at launch. At that price point it’s MUCH less of a bargain considering the build quality. It faced horrible reviews and the price was slashed in half within just a few months. Amazon even sold the International version for just $30 a couple years ago.
- The image quality on the built in screen is surprisingly excellent. That said, an adult playing it for extended periods with the tiny stick and buttons is a miserable experience. If you DO actually intend to play it on the little screen then the optional controller modeled off the NEO GEO CD pad is a must own. And I agree with you: while not having the micro-switches irritates NEO GEO “snobs,” the new pad isn’t horrible. It certainly takes getting used to and it isn’t as accurate as the original, but I think people made way too big of a deal about it.
- The games look like a blurry mess when output to a TV. That’s probably the Mini’s biggest sin and honestly a stupid oversight on SNK’s part. To be honest, though, if you never experienced the games in the arcade back in the day then you probably don’t know what you’re missing. Apparently some people actually prefer the “pixel smoothing” look. Blah.
- My two cents: the Mini is decent but throw down just a bit more cash for the NEO GEO Arcade Stick Pro. You’ll still get a great value for how many games you get. Plus, you’ll be able to “add” even more games than you can to the Mini due to the ASP’s more powerful processor. On top of that, you get a vastly improved full size joystick that you can easily mod with high quality components (which is cool but the stock components are fine). Best of all, you finally can remove that awful smudgy filter when playing on the TV!

Thanks! It honestly gets a bad wrap, and it's usually from the guys that demand premium sticks and full sized cab experience from something that you can place in your hand... for under 100$. Crazy times.
Because of INSANE collectors prices on original NEO-GEO hardware and carts , , , this portable NeoGeo Mini is the Only SNK console I will ever be interested in ,,,,,👍👽

Thank you for pointing out how bad those switches were on those pads. I had an AES and CD. One of the pads on my CD came with a broken switch. I up using my stick for both because I was afraid of breaking the other pad.

I've enjoyed mine and even love it more than my switch lite. At least I've not felt like needing to buy more games. I enjoy playing the console. It's worth buying it, to me.

I think the Neo Geo Mini walked so that the Astro City and Egret II Minis could run. I got the international version in 2018 and really enjoyed it, but sold it and only last year purchased the Japan version as I preferred the more accurate look. The buttons are perfectly fine and look nice (thought not as nice as the ones on the other two mini cabs), the look of the device is great, it feels sturdy and has a solid selection of titles.
Really can't complain about it, I've totally gotten my money's worth out of it :)

I found several TVs that worked with it without the smudged look as well. Older Tvs that did 720p did not have the blur filter.

The mini arcade craze started by the NEOGEO to the Egret II. Which mini arcade do you like the most. Personally I like the Egret II because it has more benefits and the best way to play arcade games at home. It supports Tate mode for both portable and TV, change the direction from 8 to 4 for the joystick, has the option to change the difficulty and scores, and the ability to play 10 additional games that support paddle and trackball, which is something that the Astro City lacked. I think you like half or ¾ of the list of games, but I'm fine with that, but the good news is that they will continue adding more games in the future. Maybe we can see a game that utilizes steering wheels and/or light guns. The input lag, I think I can resolve it once I get in my hand, but not right now. SNK could have done it better with the mini, though the Arcade Stick Pro is more improved and you can use it on the mini as well. Astro City, while great, it's still imperfect to play with 3 games that utilize Tate mode. Are you gonna compare it with the 3 mini arcades for the next video or not now.
The three that we've covered all are really different. There isn't one that ticks ALL the boxes, so each unit depends on what the audience is looking for. Re: a round-up? Hold onto your butts ;)

If you want really sharp HD versions of Samurai Showdown, there was a recently released collection on all consoles. Also, there are most of the Metal Slugs on Switch. Really, I like the Metal Slug Anthology even though people say it has input lag. I suspect the PS4 version of it fixed that.
There is always something ;) - To be honest, the anthology is probably the absolute best starting point for anyone to get into the series. - Only the die-hard arcade fans will know of the input latency/lag - most others simply won't see or notice it.

I have a few of these Neo Geo mini arcades including the “Christmas” edition which IMO has the best selection of games. IMO these are completely underrated regardless of the vast opinions of blurry looks on big screens. Also, I have no issues with the lack of micro switches on the controllers for this mini and I have actual Neo Geo AES consoles and controllers. Actually their quite loud and annoying but that’s just me.
I have a 720p old vizo that did not have the blur look. But if I put it on my newer tvs it did have the blur.
The Christmas version has a few extra games. I like the gaudiness of it. Red and gold. I will have to hook it up to the tv tomorrow. I lucked out and found one on Mercari. The seller was like an hours drive away from me. It was weird.
Have 2 and they are the best Mini consoles imo just bc the games are outstandingly good. The emulation is also excellent. And the controller is very good even without clicky.

I have one of these. This is alright I like a lot of stuff but it’s mostly the controllers and the built in stick that bug me. It’s analog and doesn’t use micro switches. Also on tv it looks blurry but other than that it’s great

I understand why people were disappointed with the Neo-Geo Mini when it was $130. That's a lot of money to spend. However, I bought mine for $30, and for that price, it's very hard to complain. You're getting a lot of good games for a tiny fraction of their original value!

If you have that mayflash ns, you can use many controllers .. check our review on it for more info.
Really, the filter is not that bad. It brings it closer to how it was like on a CRT. Actually, it is not as bad as a CRT. I think it is a good compromise. It was an odd design decision since the tiny screen has no filter.
A real CRT display is usually what most systems thrive to be like, as they are considered to have the *best* picture... I guess if a reasonable solution for this can't be found, then the oil painting filter is usually slapped on, but it is more of a band-aid and not a real solution to the issue at hand.

Most of them, I think. Maybe a few didn't work due to emulation problems... Seriously need to play more of this :-)
Did the Christmas version have red blood? I know the Samurai Showdown versions did. The international one doesn't.

@@kirablacknote 2A or 2.1A at 5V will be fine- the mini draws as much power as it needs to.
SNK really needs to make a "Neo Geo Mini Plus" now. The Sega and Taito mini arcades make it look extremely cheap.
Thanks for calling out the snobs, needs to be done, until they're regularly shamed. I have this, I have a real MVS, I have the Pocket Color. It's easy enough to say I've tried the options and while this one isn't clicky it doesn't suffer for it. I have the better game selection of the international one, and the games line up for those I have carts just as nice, I don't lose more playing without the click.
I just wish it had a stable hack so I could stuff my carts on there. :\ It's really tragic there's no hakchi style setup to go tweaking this or something fairly cut and dry.

Well, at least the "image optimization" or "smoothing" option makes it so that it's not a blurry mess when playing on a TV via HDMI...pick your poison.

24 bit?
NEO Geo's Graphics chip and video memory are linked by a 24bit bus and the graphics chip is 24bit 24MHZ so its as 24bit as the Jaguar and N64 is 64bit.
I wish I could get this version in Canada. All we can get is the "International" version (which removes all blood from games) :(

It truly is too bad that the image is so soft when you hook it up to the tv. I’ve got the exact same model and a couple of controllers but I’ve never even played it because it’s such a bummer that the tv hook up sucks so bad.
You can get the NEO GEO Arcade Stick Pro, as it has filtering options like Pixel-Perfect, which make the image sharper and cleaner, and it has micro-switch, button mapping, and the the ability to use it on the mini.
I have the international version and I'm sure the picture is fine. But it's only as good as your eyesight 😅
