Crazy to not have UFC 290 in the card of the year nominee, a bunch of fun prelim fights, Lawler perfect retirement, Bo Nickal getting a KO in less than a minute, amazing fight and one of the best comeback of the year in Hooker vs Turner, unbelievable upset from Dricus over Rob, fight of the year contender between Pantoja and Moreno and a masterclass from Volk to top it off.
Hard to think of a better cards in the past few years.

How in the world do people say that Izzy put a stamp on the rivalry by FINALLY winning one time against a guy who has beat him nearly a handful of times!? It's insanity to me. Now, if Izzy goes up to 205 and wins AGAIN, then we can maybe talk about putting a stamp on anything. But still....🤷🏻♂️🤨
He finally left him frozen like Elsa on the 4th try. That was probably the saddest moment of 2023 for me
I know right? I'm a huge Izzy fan, but he definitely is not the victor of that rivalry. The math ain't mathin
The other 2 wins were in a different sport... PLUS one of them was questionable.. I love Alex too but they're 1 and 1 in MMA..

Because the story is of izzy being 2nd fiddle no matter what he does and Poatan being the nightmare he can't escape from, the shadow that gets cast on izzy. When Izzy beat Poatan the nightmare is over and he out the shadow that Poatan casted, Izzy had ascended to first place the end.
Strickland got himself and Nana drama over in one year. Got the belt one year. Beat up a guy in the crowd in one year. Joined the black community in one year. He also fought 3 times this year! Desean Stickland is the fighter of the 2023

Islam's ko of volk not even in the runner ups is insane
Makes no sense considering they gave KO of the year to Emmet who knocked out Mitchell on three days notice. Volk had two weeks. Nobody expected Islam to win by first round KO, the disrespect is crazy.
i expected to see Lawler's retirement KO of Price as a runner up as well

That's not what that award is about, historically also. Joaquin Buckley won KO of the Year even though he and his opponent weren't top 10 rank fighters.
KO'ing Volkanovski who was on short notice AND coming from surgery/injury isn't too wild of an outcome. KO'ing someone with 1 punch as if they got kicked in the head, them instantly collapsing and convulsing is another level of shock.
Nothing to do with disrespect. KO award isn't about stakes, resume or how credentialed the fighters are.
If anything is taken into account for KO of the year then it would be the KO'd fighters chin, if they historically don't have a great chin then that reduces the chance of getting the award.
@@BlingBoyOto So KOing Volk on two weeks notice isn't impressive but KOing Bryce Mitchell on three days notice is. Makes sense I guess, anything to hate on Makhachev and the Dagestanis.

Glad you touched on Johnny Walker here. He's had such a whirlwind of a time in the UFC. Before the Corey Anderson fight they were touting him as the next guy to beat Jon Jones. Then he went 1-4 from 2019-2022 and looked like he was on the verge of being cut. Now he's on a three fight streak (discounting the NC) and not very far from contention if he beats Ankalaev.

I keep going back to Ismael Bonfim for the ko and debut of the year. That flying knee was just spectacular. Left McKinney stiff.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend UFC 284 and all i can say is that it was madness, that arena was on fire! Got the chance to meet a few fighters and just amazing experience. 👊
Mike Breeden vs Anshul Jubli was i think the best comeback of the year. Losing 3 in a row and losing that fight to anshul until the last round

UFC 290 not being nominated for card of the year when it’s the best by far is ridiculous. Some great cards but that was all finishes and two decisions that were arguably the best fights this year.
Sean deserved fighter of the year 100% 3 fights, 3 wins, got the belt, no controversy, can’t be said about anyone else

Ufc 290 should have been nominated defiently card of the year
Sean strickland. He fought 4 times in 2023, starting below tank 15. 3 of the 4 fights were short notice (including jizzy). Fought for it from rank 11 and put on a clinic against arguably the best striker in the UFC

How are people still saying Izzy was off? Strickland had to go to enemy territory with a bad weight cut and extreme doubt from himself and the entire community yet he still went out and dominated. Makes no sense

I think Nicolas Dalby should have gotten mentioned in either comeback of the year or upset of the year.
Goes to Sao Paulo to be the co-main vs one of the biggest Brazilian up-and-comers in Gabriel Bonfim, and was viewed as a sacrificial lamb for the hypetrain. Bonfim was close to a -600 favourite.
He gets boxed up and ragdolled in the first round, but rallies in the second, and finishes Bonfim with vicious combinations and knees up against the fence.

@@beaualoevv lol true I only seen him fight once and I’m definitely not a casual I don’t be making bad takes like most people. But I definitely see him bringing more shine to the flyweight division.
I don't know if it's list-worthy, but 10 or 20 fighters who suffered their first KO or TKO loss from a head kick or flying knee. Honorable mention- the MVP knee, especially with talks of him joining the UFC. Seems relevant to show just how powerful and dangerous kicks and knees can be.

Leon Edwards defended his title against both Usman and Covington this year. Usman and Covington were both considered the top 2 Welterweight Boogeyman from 2018 - 2023 and he killed their mystique.
He didn't look great against Colby. He should've gotten him out of there tbh

He beat Colby for four consecutive rounds, was never in danger getting finished, and had no visible damage or scratches unlike Colby with his two swollen eyes, bleeding from the face, and a bunch of ice wrapping his entire leg limping after the fight.

Strickland gets my vote as well, after you explained your thought processes. I, personally, would’ve voted for Alex until you reminded me the Izzy oiss was 2023….for some reason I remembered it being winter 2022 before new years…so my timeline was off to begin with, but, Strickland went from losing to 2 finishes and a solid decision win in a title fight. Just don’t let him know….his head is going to fill the 30’ octagon during his first defense.

Fun fact about Mini Mike. He has yet to beat anyone on a win streak… Lost to 3 out of top 5 guys. Dan Hooker was ranked 6 and Tony was ranked 8 when he fought them. Yet he’s STILL number freaking 5 in the rankings….

I really don’t understand why people think it was an off night for Izzy. He said it wasn’t in the post fight interview and was so pissed he had his coach talk for him who further lamented the fact that there was no off night and that they got beat. He hasn’t suggested it ever nor has Izzy.
