I was a born a "crack baby" and i was a straight A student in high school. I usually avoid watching these documentaries because i hate to see what i went through. I was born full term but at 4lbs 3oz. I was taken away at birth and adopted.
I've seen this first hand. My mom was a crack addict. In 1989 right before we were put in foster care and seperated. My newborn sister would scream for hours and shake. My mom said she was spoiled...wtf. When we were took from her and she got medical assistance they determined she was suffering from Crack withdrawal and almost died. Long story short. I last seen my little sister when she was 5. We were seperated and I found her when she was 25 on social media. She was an addict and had lost parental rights to her twin boys. She was taken from my mom at 4 month of age, and never knew who are mom was, yet her life ended up just like her birth mom. There should be a study to see if being born addicted has any corrilation to becoming an addict later in life. I was born in 79 so thankful I came before the Crack epidemic.
+Asia Blaque Being born addicted; or having an addict/alcoholic parent can certainly lead to their children being addicts. I am living proof of that. Today in class we looked at a drug addicted mechanical doll; it had a recording of an actual real-life drug addicted newborn looping. The doll was even trembling. It was so sad I almost teared up. It's horrible. I hate it, it's just ruining the child's life.
I remember when they developed those dolls for use in health classes in schools. The cry wasn't the same as a real crack baby, but it made me cry because I had cared for the real thing. They were programmed to cry every hour, and to take longer to "comfort". I understood why they created them, but I thought it was awful to use them in a high school health class.
"There's certain ideas people want to believe that really fit in with cultural stereotypes, and it's hard to get rid of those." She basically described the entire war on drugs with one sentence. Just another way for people to demonize other people they didn't like.
Fetal alcohol syndrome babies have longer term damage, the hard part about crack and cocaine will have are withdrawal. Plus some may have heart or other defects
That’s what caused them to be trembly and constantly near screaming. They were going through withdrawal. Honestly it’s very hard to watch because you want to reach through the screen and comfort them.
To be fair, cocaine is a stimulant, while alcohol is an actual mutagenic, carcinogenic neurotoxin. I suppose you can be poisoned by cocaine too, but it's an alkali that's better processed by the body (which is why the high has such a short duration), and much like heroin, heavy recreational use damages dopamine receptors and emotional regulation, while leaving cognitive and motor function relatively undamaged.
25 crack babies were much too small of a pool in order for there to have been conclusive evidence gathered from their data. A couple hundred would have been valuable. We really need more “crack babies” reporting their experiences, and context of potential of their potential symptoms. However, t is difficult to gauge what symptoms may be directly influenced by coke and not by other reasons. Different genes, different experiences = different people.
Kelsey Breen they also should have looked at different social and economic backgrounds of a lot of the crack babies, especially ones born to rich or stable women or ones adopted by stable and or rich families. Because the ones that grew up in poverty or in barely stable conditions are probably too influenced by environment to study and conclude on the effects that only the addiction during pregnancy and early months of their lives have on them now.
I was a nursing student in the mid to late 80s. I did my maternity and newborn rotations at Broward General Hospital. One of my patients was a crack addicted mother, and when she she delivered, she was high on crack. Her baby was premature, who wailed piteously, terribly underweight. It was heartbreaking. I spent time with the mother, talking. I remember her telling me that she was going to stop using crack. I really wanted to believe her. I really did. Her baby was what I remember the most. The cry. Thirty years later, when I go to our NICU, I see babies who are premature. I remember her baby, and I wonder how they fared. I wonder if she was able to quit. I wonder how her baby is today. My pastor and his wife adopted a crack addicted preemie in the 1990s. He was a smart boy, but he had emotional and a degree of developmental delay that they were told was due to his mother's drug abuse during her pregnancy. He's since graduated from high school, and is working a full time job, but it's not clear if he'll be able to live on his own.
I'm glad that people realize that alcohol had been way more detrimental to the community in general, just look at the statistics. However crack in its era did political damage throughout the black community and we should understand these types of things will persist until we as people choose to do better. Love and peace I'm out.
Because of past drug epidemics I'm SO worried about today's drug waves. Flaka, bath salts, etc. I can only imagine what theses new drugs could do to a new born.
According to Betancourt et al. (2012), 1 in 6 newborns delivered in Philadelphia hospitals had moms who used cocaine while pregnant. However, effects have only observed up until early adolescence. The prefrontal cortex goes through major development during adulthood, an area that is most likely to be affected by cocaine exposure. They found no significant differences between prenatal cocaine exposure and control adolescents on working memory, receptive language, or inhibitory control. However, small differences could become larger if they are linked to high risk problem behaviors later in life.
One of my younger brothers was born to a crack addicted mother and he has suffered terribly with both physical and mental symptoms his whole life. His mother is dead now bc of her lifestyle choices, but I would love to see someone open a rehab specially catered to pregnant addicts. Many facilities can't handle the medical demand and specialty care it takes to deal with pregnant women on drugs. Someone should develop a program and I'm SURE it would be immensely successful.
A bad side effect of this moral panic is that many drug treatment places refuse to take pregnant women, or they only take very few. So the pregnant woman who may need drug treatment but who fears being arrested usually goes into hiding, and misses critical medical care. And when these women are arrested, they often do not get good medical treatment or healthy food while in prison anyway.
Mother's who are pregnant shouldn't be doing any drugs or drinking. They should get help as soon as they find out there pregnant. Why would we stick up for these mom's. If they don't get help they should get charged with abuse
This is so sad and heart breaking that these little innocent babies have to go threw, I know my cousin was using whike pregnant I tried so hard cried yelled everything i could do to stop her. ...bc I knew the babies was going to suffer. He was born yesterday and taken away, he was a healthy weight but just knowing he's going threw this right now breaks me. God bless these babies.
I have a kid and i can't understand how pregnant women can do drugs... they dont love their unborn babies. they are selfish.... i feel so bad for those babies. i was soooo careful while being pregnant and so overprotective over my unborn child, that i can't imagine doing drugs while having my kid inside of me.
You have to understand the nature of addiction. When you're addicted to a substance it goes way past "maternal instincts" or whatever else you "can't imagine" either way what these women need is rehabilitation. The biological "nurturing" imperative you are trying to describe is not universal and certainly not all women feel that way, although the vast majority would agree with you. I also think it's terrible but I also try to understand the circumstances that led these women to addiction.
+honeymclean Addicts worry about their next high, and that's it. They aren't thinking about birth control, fetal health, or much else. Addictions are so awful.
My husband was born a crack baby in 1979. He has cerebral palsy. So yeah the doctor was way off when he predicted what he thought would happen. How can a mother do such a thing to an innocent child? How do they live with themselves? *UGH*
+Mikaela Argyrakis also many babies whose mothers were not doing any drugs. If you would have actually payed attention to the documentary you would have noticed how they said all premature babies tend to be shaky, weak and thin. Not just the "crack" premature babies.
+Ecléctico Iconoclasta I did pay attention to this video, and I've taken a parenting class.. I find it sick that these babies have to go through the pain of being born addicted to drugs. Maybe if the parents hadn't been on drugs the child would have been born on a normal due date and wouldn't be forced to hang on to life. It's sad. Innocent babies die because of this problem. Don't call me out on not paying attention to this video. And notice original comment.. The "But still..." indicates that I had acknowledged that point the documentary was making - that premature babies shake just like ones born addicted to drugs. But still, I don't believe a baby should be clinging on to life.
Alexys07 06 Why is it that with every religious comment there’s someone like you who just HAS to knock them down. Whether you think there is a god or not, someone who believes in something you don’t doesn’t hurt you in any way.
I had 3 babies. Was smart enough before I had kids to stay away from the drug scene. When one of my kids got to be an adult her paid me the nicest compliment I was never expecting. He said, "Thanks Mom for taking care of yourself when you were pregnant with us." I told him, "No problem, that's what a Mom does." I assumed he'd seen some young pregnant girls, drinking, smoking and doing drugs whilst pregnant. Anyway, it was nice to hear that. My one vice I did have was that I was a big coffee drinker. I normally drank 2 or 3 pots of coffee a day. But when I became pregnant, the very smell of coffee repulsed me. My hormones were everywhere. I couldn't drink any coffee. I attribute that little great to the Lord. Knowing how much I loved it and knowing drinking that much caffeine wouldn't have been good for the baby. It's like he took the desire away. I know anything a mother eats, drinks, ingests carries on to the baby. My Mom smoked cigarettes and drank (not a lot) with myself and my other siblings. I was born underweight and had to be in an incubator. My brother developed a collapsed lung and spent months in the hospital underneath an oxygen tent. Apparently, docs back then said smoking wasn't harmful but I never needed the opinion of a doctor to know smoking is dangerous to the baby. It's just common sense. To those of you who were born under these conditions, I say I'm sorry but you made it and are here for a reason. You can overcome anything by trusting in Jesus and taking care of your body the best way possible.
I'm very happy how stone turned out. Sometimes just not listening to somebody is the best thing. I'm glad you proved Them wrong. Good luck and God-bless.
My cousin wasn't born in this era but her mom still did it. She was born addicted to crack. She would scream for hours on end and she wouldn't eat for days. she had multiple seizures per day for the first 2 months of her life and then her skin started to fall off when she was 3 months old. The doctors connected this to the crack. She is now 11 years old. She has a hard time learning and she has trouble with social skills. Luckily she lives with my grandmother now and not her awful mom
My wife worked in maternity wards in the south of England during the time that the legal highs were freely available in Britain's high streets and she would sometimes come home in tears because of the quantity of young mothers coming in pregnant and still using the legal highs. It's bad enough when pregnant mothers smoke tobacco and drink alcohol because of the effect that they have on the unborn baby as whatever the mother consumes will hit the babies much worse.
I was born of a mother who had used Crack when she was pregnant with me, I was born with extreme anxiety and I as a baby couldn't be calmed down. I had to be held constantly or I'd cry uncontrollably and would not stop. I just would not be able to be calmed on my own I couldn't self soothe, besides that I was okay, and normal
There is always a person that is a scapegoat for the truth. The young lady, whom I am glad did not have to suffer addiction, so she says needs to understand CRACK KILLS!!! Bottom line just cause your an exceptional case deal with the facts. I have been around these babies and too often seen what they go thru, the crying and screaming for dear life it seemed to me, they don't calm down no matter what you do to comfort them it's not a pretty thing.
So sad watching those babies shaking and going through withdrawals. I've had problems with heroin and withdrawal I wouldn't wish on anyone. Hope as many as possible survived to be healthy.
I remember when crack babies was a scare. I know that when babies are born to a woman who is on heroin they put the woman on methadone and the babies are in the hospital for weeks sometimes months to wean the babies off. The babies are only sick from heroin for a few days or not at all so I wonder why they put the mothers on methadone which will put the babies through that long stressful detox? I think they need a better way and maybe rethink their methods...
The word Crack Babies is so offensive. And the labels you are put under is even worst. Your suppose to be this and suppose to be that. A label follows you through school. If you were in special education its in your IEP for all to see. (BORN WITH CRACK IN SYSTEM) IEP - (its a specialized plan to help you). In High School all I wanted was a real diploma not something that read special Education on it. I was even told by someone in school I would not be able to pass the GED and but I made them into lie and pass it. I have my share of faults but I did not do drugs or have children out of wedlock. They wonder what happen to those babies. Well here I am . I was one those babies from the 80's. (Crack baby if you will) But God, I am a saved, married woman with children. A far cry of what I was supposed to be.
crack baby is a term to describe a baby born addicted to crack. you can easily just replace it with any other drug baby people born this way say it. now while i dont think it should be available for all to see as that is invasive....and i believe you have a right to privacy. its good you overcame that but also remember many do not.
Let me tell you, crack is love and everything you've always wanted....until it takes EVERYTHING away from you. Then, you have a lifetime of fighting the temptation. Don't try it. Blessings to all those babies, mothers and to everyone who has used and uses. It may seem impossible, but there is hope, you can stop.
Now babies are being born addicted to opiates 😢. One thing i am glad about is the fact that they treat the babies much quicker but even still, they aren’t treated until there are signs of withdrawals which by then the babies are suffering. It is in the works that this issue is changing and babies will be tested right away and treated BEFORE they feel the withdrawals. (I watch a lot of CZcams lol).
If Einstein's mother had used crack, he would be an average person, and some people would be like "Meh, crack is not thaaat harmful to babies, look at that lad Einstein, he's pretty normal" 😅
I think the video should make it more clear that even tho the affects of cocain use wasn’t as bad as expected that it is still bad to use crack cocain as a pregnant mother and it is still wrong and the risk is still there.
@ihishaWilliams it does , babies born with addiction have a higher chance to become addicts. These are facts, but with a loving home and great guidance this can be avoided ... It just takes a lot of love and support. There is always hope and some are able to not be a statistic ...

Because the ones that grew up in poverty or in barely stable conditions are probably too influenced by environment to study and conclude on the effects that only the addiction during pregnancy and early months of their lives have on them now.
we can thank our government for the crack epidemic..THE END!!!
just exactly how is the government to blame for this?
Candy - I think you've been smoking too much crack again.
candy jones actually it's true if you look around for the declassified file CIA distributed cocaine and crack to the inner-city in the 80s
some idiots did, they didn't invent crack or cocaine though and drug user will always be a drug user. They will find ANY drug to get high on.
Mexico. But the government got it to us. So both
I was a nursing student in the mid to late 80s.
Must have bern a fast labor.
Crack only last about 20 minutes, was she smoking it up in the labor room?
These Retro Reports are great, you should make more NYT!
I was a crack baby too. I came out healthy no complications, but I do have a minor learning disability. But you can never tell I do.
🌹🌹🌹
I'm glad that people realize that alcohol had been way more detrimental to the community in general, just look at the statistics. However crack in its era did political damage throughout the black community and we should understand these types of things will persist until we as people choose to do better. Love and peace I'm out.
Because of past drug epidemics I'm SO worried about today's drug waves. Flaka, bath salts, etc. I can only imagine what theses new drugs could do to a new born.
Make them superhuman coming out a c section on there own
Now the worst. FENTANYL.
Hearing those baby cry and shake that brought me to tears😢
I blame the crack industry
Insteresting piece! I remember a man coming to our school in junior highschool talking about crack and crack babies.
"Are you a crack baby" - everybody hates chris 😂😭😭
I love these I've just watched five in a row... it's a binge.
I hope those babies are doing well now as adults ❤
R.J.Kjeldgaard Nope. A lot of them suffer from mental illness
They aren’t
Probably in prison
Where I live they are wreaking havoc in the city and reproducing lots of children. It's sad.
95% of them are not. The only positive stories you hear are always the outliers. Actions have consequences.
Watching this is hurtful
I’m so blessed my mom has never done drugs
At least that she admitted to...
Nuno Filipe fr people who smoke weed are dumb af
Mother's who are pregnant shouldn't be doing any drugs or drinking. They should get help as soon as they find out there pregnant. Why would we stick up for these mom's. If they don't get help they should get charged with abuse
I agree, iv commented the same thing
ignorant
Jessica Holden addicts need help not punishment
ignorant it's ok for a pregnant mom to do drugs. Have you ever seen a drug baby? Is that fair for a human to start out like that?
So your ok with pregnant women doing drugs?? They should be charged with child abuse. It's ok to starve your kids to.
Then why dot they get the birth control injection which takes minutes to save years of misery ?
+honeymclean Addicts worry about their next high, and that's it. They aren't thinking about birth control, fetal health, or much else. Addictions are so awful.
It's called Ronald Reagan attempting to take Black people out ...
Sylvie Vega Siurana wow your a better person than everyone for that exact reason. All hail mother marry
wow. ......did they just say alcohol has more devastating effects than crack????
Yes and it's the truth. Alcohol during pregnancy is more severe.
My husband was born a crack baby in 1979. He has cerebral palsy. So yeah the doctor was way off when he predicted what he thought would happen.
How can a mother do such a thing to an innocent child? How do they live with themselves? *UGH*
Being pregnant wouldn't make you want to stop or get help???
Jessica Holden thats exactly what i asked myself 😑
Jessica Holden addiction is strong
Jessica Holden addicts cannot stop their addiction while pregnant or it will kill the baby. It's much worse than continuing!
I think God my mom never got on drugs in Atlanta like some of my other friends mom.
I’m surprised by this, I never knew it had been proven to be a myth. I love these videos.
But still, those poor babies just hanging on to life..
SAD!!!!!
Crack heads really shouldn't have children in the first place.
***** was is very obvious which ones were "crack babies"? How did they act???
please God comfort these poor babies. this just hurts my heart.
yellow thunder But...
God not real
Alexys07 06
Why is it that with every religious comment there’s someone like you who just HAS to knock them down. Whether you think there is a god or not, someone who believes in something you don’t doesn’t hurt you in any way.
You didn't listen.
You didn't even watch the docu.
Dumb people always believe in god. I'm glad i don't
Yeah… the babies are either dead or are severely damaged adults.
I love this. I've been curious about what happened to "crack babies" in adulthood and now I finally know.
I freaking love this channel.
I'm very happy how stone turned out. Sometimes just not listening to somebody is the best thing. I'm glad you proved Them wrong. Good luck and God-bless.
In the 90’s, one kid calling another kid a crack baby was the ultimate insult. 😂
And now we have opioid babies who are immediately born into withdrawals. It’s really devastating. :-(
I’m almost feeling like this is advocating for crack use when your pregnant
God, please give them the strength.
+Quincy Davis amen
some of them are already dead or can't have strength in them. but still, I hope the survivors live as normal lives as possible
God it good
to bad he isn't real

They are Nazis..
also big props to this doctor who addmited he was wrong and looked into new research. not a lot of people are willing to do that.
RIP Peter Jennings
The 80s was a wild era all those babies are in their 30’s ...
I must say, I've seen Dr. Claire Coles in another documentary---woman, you are my hero!!!!
Just becausr it didnt causr devestating side effects/harm, doesnt make it ok for a baby to suffer, wether its jitters or brain damage
Mandy Shores
Nobody said it did
I can only help but think of Stewie when he said “What’s that? Oh, oh, yes, I love crack! I’m absolutely COOKOO for crack!”
9:40 Very profound statement she makes and very accurate.
Angelica Guerrero true that.
alcohol is the worst...has worst effect on the baby
It used to be crack cocaine and now it's meth, heroin and fentanyl.
And it’s mostly white women
"Even in small-town America!" Gasp! Who would've thought! *rme*
Some of those babies weren't done forming....😢 This is why I want to be a pediatrician.
Love the old school stethoscope at 0:26
Being from Tucson I guess it's weird to hear Tucson grouped in the same category as those big cities like Houston, Philly, Kansas City & Sacramento.
how did I get get here??
I know so many who came into this world on drugs... alot of them will leave it on them.
Addiction unfairly hurts a lot of people, worst of all in cases like this innocent children. However, It's a sickness, not a crime
Oh God,Help these children
There is always a person that is a scapegoat for the truth. The young lady, whom I am glad did not have to suffer addiction, so she says needs to understand CRACK KILLS!!! Bottom line just cause your an exceptional case deal with the facts. I have been around these babies and too often seen what they go thru, the crying and screaming for dear life it seemed to me, they don't calm down no matter what you do to comfort them it's not a pretty thing.
9:35 Alcohol is much more of a problem, it is much more used and it has more severe effects
Nothing worse for a recovering addict than seeing images of people using drugs - still, they used it in anti-drug ads.
It’s like ‘Reefer Madness’, just a different era/drug.
I had a teacher who told us that the reason why NYC was giving us so many tests every year was because of crack.
This just ruined my day especially the baby who had a seizure 😭
tgf xp that’s a laughing crying emoji
These babies need to exert some personal responsibility and just SAY NO! How hard is that?!?!?
I saw on this Channel an item Abuse of Maids Indonesia! When I attempted to see it it had disappeared! Whats going on?
This woman is so right and we need to treat all addicted this way.
So correct me if im wrong but there telling me crack doesn't have an effect on baby's in the womb?
So sad watching those babies shaking and going through withdrawals. I've had problems with heroin and withdrawal I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Hope as many as possible survived to be healthy.
As a NICU nurse any opiate causes awful withdrawal , awful
I was watching bulldog puppies ... How did i get here
I remember when crack babies was a scare.
(BORN WITH CRACK IN SYSTEM)
IEP - (its a specialized plan to help you).
Virlene Myers I'm sorry they put you in special education
My brother is in special education.
That's Really Sad To Hear :(
crack baby is a term to describe a baby born addicted to crack. you can easily just replace it with any other drug baby
people born this way say it. now while i dont think it should be available for all to see as that is invasive....and i believe you have a right to privacy.
its good you overcame that but also remember many do not.
Boo fking hoo.
Who could do such a thing so sad.
Alexis Wise It's not their fault.
My aunt's heart exploded from crack use...
Wether it’s effecting or not, you shouldn’t do CRACK WHILE PREGNANT!!!! 😂
i think you used the wrong emoji
Or don't get pregnant if you're a crackhead
The undeniable truth: alcohol is by far the most devastating drug. Legalized.
It's because prohibition and the effects that they were going through
I was born in 1975 and I a lot of problems related to my parents use of drugs. You don’t know what you haven’t experienced!
I am now a chemical dependency counselor sober 18 years on the 15th of September! God is good!
My crack baby went to Harvard. He now leads a major pharmaceutical company and hooks the whole world on drugs.
VERY SAD
so sad!
I think the video should make it more clear that even tho the affects of cocain use wasn’t as bad as expected that it is still bad to use crack cocain as a pregnant mother and it is still wrong and the risk is still there.
So SAD
@ihishaWilliams it does , babies born with addiction have a higher chance to become addicts. These are facts, but with a loving home and great guidance this can be avoided ... It just takes a lot of love and support. There is always hope and some are able to not be a statistic ...
Alcohol in pregnancy is by far worse than any drug a pregnant woman can take!!
Every drug is bad.
Yes , but alcohol does the most damage!! It is irreversible too
Meth hello is also irreversible.
MsTomas086 Alcohol is the only drug that is totally irreversible !! Yes Meth is bad but alcohol is by far worse!!
dana davies No meth is men made nothing natural about this Alcohol after stopping you can reversible the damages if it is not too late.My sister is drug addict and she does meth and I work in health care.
