    I blew up an engine because I forgot to to put the oil cap back on once... there was no clue until I saw a puff of white steam blowing behind car... luckily the car was end of life anyway, but it's a life lesson. It's amazing how just leaving the cap off can empty the oil out by splashing out gradually.

      @JonnyDIY  Před 28 dny +1

      Dang that's wild. Yeah lucky like you said car was at end of it's life. I had a friend forget to add oil after and blew up an engine too. All learning lessons though! Some more expensive than others 😆

      @@JonnyDIY I kind of turned it into a good thing, because I learned to fix cars with that blow up - changed the head with a $100 junk yard head, and car was working again... I gave it away after... saved a lot of money on repairs since.

      @@pingpong9656 Nice! Yeah we used to always be changing head gaskets and heads, engines, transmissions when I was a bit younger. Still mess around with them now, but luckily usually have a spare car now so it's not as bad when you have a bad breakdown like that

    Great Tip on pointing out to fill the oil filter with new oil before screwing it on. So many people don't do this and even worst they punch the throttle after starting the car instead of letting it just idle at a normal speed to circulate the new oil.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  Před 11 dny

      Thanks! 🙌👍 Yes important to take easy so engine can build that oil pressure back up .

    If I plan on keeping a car any length of time I always swap out the drain plug for a drain tap, $20 makes oil changes much easier and cleaner as you can stick a pipe over the tap and put the other end directly into an old empty 5l container and just drain your oil straight into this. You know you will never have any issues with the drain plug thread and if you buy a car with a bad thread already you don't even have to retap it you can screw in a tap with some epoxy metal round the thread as a bodge and you are good for the life of the car.

      First I’ve heard of this, any brands you recommend for the drain tap?

    • @rodpanhard
      @rodpanhard Před 28 dny +3

      @@angelmartin2243 Usually a brand called Fumoto I've always used, never had one fail or leak yet, just a case of getting the right thread size and pitch.

    Love the look of the Highlander coming off the ramps. Your rims look perfect. I live in the New England area and every Highlander has corrosion on the outer edge of the rims due to the tons off salt they put on the roads during the winter.

    When I change my oil, I like to run the engine for a few minutes so that the old oil can come out faster.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  Před 24 dny

      Great idea 👍 I usually do that too, but I crack the oil filter loose first a tiny bit so I won't burn myself after engine warm 👍

    Lots of great tips Jonny, funnel in the filler at start, that’s for my bad brain. I only use fully syn. I like the funnels that can turn on and off to control fill. I always like to measure tge oil removed. Larry

    Not spilling any oil during an oil change is a bucket list item. 25 plus years and that goal has been illusive.

      @JonnyDIY  Před 20 dny

      🤣 You're so right! Same here. I pulled my car on a big tarp once to do oil change, it worked well could just wipe oil right off when spilled. But too lazy to do that and creeper doesn't roll well over it either 😆

    put the oil cap on the hood latch so you don't forget to put it back on. Can't close the hood with the cap there.

      @sexycowman Před 29 dny

      I was sure it was clickbait but got stung by giving it the benefit of the doubt. Advice to the uploader is to change the title to something more like "Avoid THESE common mistakes if you're new to oil changes". As it stands you're most likely attracting people who already know how to do it properly and pissing them off. Otherwise it's a good video.

      Also the thumbnail clearly pointing out that filling the engine with oil using a funnel is wrong? Come on man, you can do better than that
